Spoiler for, I'm not even joking, the solution to every single problem in the movie
He solves every single problem by shooting a laser at it
Watched the first three Terminator movies, and I don't have a ton of thoughts on the first two other than "these movies are good as hell and the theme slaps," but the third is interesting in that it almost works. The biggest problems are in the early going, where it piles in jokes that just flat out don't work (the terminator getting his outfit from a stripper is a good gag; the stripper inexplicably being gay so they can do a "talk to the hand" joke later and do an "isn't it hilarious that Arnold is putting on star shaped sunglasses" gag that lasts for what feels like ten minutes, and while they have some restraint with "what if the terminator is a hot lady this time," they also run into the movie's biggest problem, namely that they didn't do a great job in casting, or at the very least they've done a very poor job in directing the actors.
The central plot of the movie, that they only delayed Judgment Day and that John is destined to become the leader, no matter how much he doesn't want it, is good, and the idea that he's done such a good job hiding that they go back in time to kill his lieutenants instead is smart, it's just also extremely goofy that they're like "they all went to high school together!" The "destined to be a leader" stuff also works much better if they bother to really show any of those qualities in him. One thing none of the Terminator movies post 2 have done is really show anything that makes John Connor special. When he's completely unseen in the first one, you can fill in the blanks, and that works, but at least in two they establish that he's extremely compassionate and willing to take huge risks to save people, and you can see how those qualities could lead to great leadership. In 3 he mostly...complains about his lot in life.
The ending is good, I think, that everyone just maneuvered them into a place where they'd survive, though even that ends up more establishing that John Connor is such a good leader in this fight because...he is there to answer the phone at the right moment, and his second in command is only important because she...knew some military guys. They wanted to push the fate angle pretty hard, and in the end they didn't really nail the landing on it, because they didn't really do the work.
Ultimately, I kinda like the Dark Fate take on things
where they kill John Connor...and then someone else steps up instead.

a better A Quiet Place than either of the AQP films, a better alien film than anything except maybe Arrival this millennium, a better home invasion film than maybe even The Invitation, a perfect ending, and it only has one real sentence spoken
They don't make them like this anymore. And they tried their absolute best keeping it that way by burying it on streaming in hopes people wouldn't find it
Terminator Salvation's core plot of "we can't do a military strike on enemy hq because my dad is there and I haven't sent him to the past to fuck my mom yet and I'm the most important boy who has ever lived" is extremely stupid

Michael Clayton is so good that I give it a pass for having so many white folk on it.
terminator genisys fucking sucks, and you can see very clearly how it got further destroyed by studio notes to put in a quip here, or whatever, and the scenes where they basically just do shot for shot recreations of scenes from the first terminator movie look so much worse and do Jai Courtney no favors, and he really needs someone to do him some favors

I will mildly disagree here.
Terminator Genisys fucken rips for like the first twenty (?) minutes while they are still in the 80s. Then they time travel to the future and it sucks.
I really liked the Sarah Connor Chronicles. It has some good actors (in particular I really like Garret Dillahunt). The glimpses into the future were usually pretty neat and interesting, like the submarine, or the runner kid. Wall terminator was funny and helped reinforce major differences between us and machines. They even justified/explained being able to survive so many encounters with a machine that reacts way faster and way more accurately than us when it finally didn't go so well for our plucky heroes. I enjoyed it a ton more than most of the post t2 movies.
I feel T 3 has a lot of problems but is Ok overall
I feel Dark Fate is better than it seems or a bad take it is fan fiction with the terminator tag
Terminator Salvation I do like how they show the bleak future war but it seems like a sideshow and background noise
Genesys I only saw part of it on amazon and turned it off as it was silly stupid

Dark Fate is an insult to the first two films and I'm amazed that opening happened after how Cameron was unhappy with what Fincher did to Newt and Hicks. You live long enough to become the villain after all. It's easiest to just ignore every entry after 2.

Ok this movie kind of rules so far.
Reminds me of the home invasion scenes in Signs without any of the dumb shit.

I liked it a lot but I still think the
Constant comedic trouble the aliens have with actually getting this one person into a flying saucer undermined the horror. It made it hard to take them chasing after her seriously after like the fourth time they just sort of stumbled down a flight of stairs instead of using their psionic powers to easily and immediately capture her. They flicked back and forth between "impossible to escape supernatural force" and "unable to defeat a mop". By the end I was just imagining the after-action debrief where they're like "Guys... it was a neat idea to try this one nude but I think we've got to wear protective gear for our next mission. We lost a lot of good people."
But I did like the execution of a steadily growing threat, reasonable attempts at escape with reasonable consequences, and the cool ending.
The fact that it's PG-13 is also kind of great, because it makes it a much easier recommend for people who are on the fence about spooky movies.
We're all in this together

The Dark Fate opener would bother me if there was a continuous Terminator timeline that every story had built into. Since it's been a multiverse since 3, I truly do not care about it. One branching timeline where that happens is not a big deal.
I'm a big fan of dismantling any and every, "There is only one fated dude who can do whatever" narrative, fuck em all up, who cares

It's a versatile problem solver!

Not to say it was an Oscar-caliber film or anything, but I enjoyed it a lot. (It's my favorite musical ever, so call me biased.)
Two roles that I think are maybe actual international crimes.

Low key mad we didn't get more of those. Honestly I'd just dig more Napoleonic era stuff in general
I should probably track down and watch Sharpe, of only to enjoy Shawn Bean (with his shirt off on occasion, even!)

I hate the beginning. It feels like it cheapens everything Sarah struggled for in the first two movies. At least 3 made her struggles worth something.
As for Salvation, it's like they didn't even try to mirror the aesthetic of the Future War from 1/2... neither did Dark Fate, really.

T2 is the classic. Just massive blockbuster. James Cameron as fuck.
After that it’s a lot of down with an occasional up but mostly down.
