While I don't want to derail a thread focused on Mr. Reubens' life/legacy, if you want to go down that rabbit-hole:
Killer in question was Rodney Alcala. He appeared on Dating Game in 1978 while working for the LA Times as a photographer and was at the time sought in connection with a murder in New York under the name John Berger and would eventually be convicted of multiple homicides/assaults in California and having a couple thousand pictures of CSE material he'd taken.

You know, I'm struggling to define Pee Wee Herman to someone under 40. He was like... a nerdy child, who was also a grown up?
Edit: Okay, someone else pointed out why I think he was important. For kids of a certain age, his show was where we learned it's okay to be weird.
He’s a human SpongeBob, is how I would relate it.
Or Bluey/Bingo, now that I’m attuned to it, I’m very appreciative of stuff that shows kids and parents “how to play”
What Krusty the Klown is meant to be a satire of. A clown running an inexplicably popular kid's show that big Hollywood names all keep guest starring on.
Krusty is almost explicitly Bozo the Clown, the longrunning morning kid's show out of Chicago.
I inagine that Reubens was also influenced by Bozo, though.
worth noting that Major City's Local Celebrity Clown used to be a way more common thing, Bozo was just the last man standing for a good while there
Growing up in Oregon, Groening's Local Celebrity Clown would have been a fellow who went by the name Rusty Nails.

They sound like the kind of thing that would've died out the moment VHS became a thing.
One of the places I was stationed had an adult arcade right out on the main strip through town, was still there circa 2013. Though google maps says it's since been turned into a cupcake shop.

There are plenty in Portland, just right on big streets. Iirc, one is called Mr. Peeps. Just come on in and... I don't really know. Watch a movie? I guess?

I imagine it's actually not that hard to get an actor to show up for one scene to be goofy and ham it up.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
It's a great show. Hard to imagine someone saying "No, I don't want to dress up and play a silly vampire for a half a day of shooting and hang out with some funny people".
