Online multiplayer was officially announced for The Binding of Isaac. The True Co-op mode in Repentance is an absolute blast, and while Steam Remote Play is plenty fine for my brother and I, it’s not for many people, not to mention console players. Nice to see it happening.

Did they finally add controller support?

I remember that being a sticking point for me back in the day.

Ha, yeah, that came in with the Rebirth remake forever ago.

Nice, may check it out finally.

I mean probably not, but I was flabbergasted it wasn't the case from the start.

Probably something to do with being originally written in Flash. No idea how difficult or even possible it was to program non-keyboard input at that point.

Inscryption didn't escape the fat-deck design issue, but the fact that once you ran out of cards you more or less just died was a decent incentive to have extras.

Taxing the act of shuffling, or putting Exhaust (remove from deck on play) on every card, or some other permanent consequence as a forcing function might be able to make a larger deck more appealing.

On the other hand, I can still see the argument for allowing or even encouraging the player to reduce their deck to a tightly-focused set of cards: as you approach the endgame of a run-based game, you want to skew more toward consistency than randomness because of the player's emotional investment in the run.

Epic needs to do another announcement about how many more people got fired because they "forgot" to fire them last time.

Yeah, the sad thing about the Bird-Faced Urn run is that I went into my first Elite with Ball Lightning and almost all of my health. Then it turned out to be a Sentries battle where I got all defends on the first turn and all strikes on the second turn and lost over half my max health. After that it was Campfire->Jaw Worm+Spike Slime->Goblin Gang->staggering into a Lagavulin fight with 14 health and no solid defense cards.

I don't usually mess around with seeds, but I might go back and do a little alternate worldbuilding to see just how doomed that run was if I'd started on the other branch.

Okay, Act 1 appears to be a bear no matter how you approach it, but the next artifact you get after Mercury Hourglass is Incense Burner, and you can get two Defragment cards by the end of the act. I didn't win, but there's a lot of potential there. If anyone wants to bust this one wide open, the seed is YAHDII24V14L. I was on Defect A16, and choosing Inheritance in the custom menu will get you the urn.

There's a roguelike deck builder I've played on mobile called Dark Mist where one of the gimmicks is that your cards are your health pool, so when an enemy hits you for 3 damage, that's represented by them taking 3 cards from your discard pile (and they'll go back to your main deck once you kill the enemy)

The rest of the design and balance isn't great, but I've always thought that one feature was an interesting way to give some incentive towards adding more cards to your deck, instead of the usual "remove all the fun bits until I'm playing the same combo every turn"

Monster Train draw is incredibly available, from boss relic for draw being your general default choice to gameplans which stuff your hand like stings to the draw priority system spacing out your banner units across turns so you aren’t starved on such an important aspect of the game. The game starts with multiple dead weight cards that cannot be removed by any means which aren’t huge deals. The difficulty tier where you start with a few random cards is a downside but a fun downside that isn’t nearly as bad as it would be in other systems. Anything is better than starting cards and it gives you a certain direction to build in without getting in the way of banner unit draws.

While I don’t have as much playtime as Penguin, and I’m not nearly as good (around a17 on all chars), the game itself is tons of fun.

I probably have about a thousand hours and come back to it every few months until I burn out again.

There are even some Workshop mods to spice things up, but I typically go back to vanilla for balance reasons.

I've said it before, but Monster Train's clan system and how that ties into what starter cards you get makes the early game way more enjoyable than StS. And the ability to see what gimmick the final boss will have from the start allows you to avoid a blowout from them hard countering you.

On the topic of deck thinning it's definitely a core, pragmatic part of the genre, but I get people wanting to chuck a ton of cards they like into a pile, even if it dramatically decreases your chance of winning. It's also fine when you're learning a deck builder so you can learn as much as possible.

I think Wildfrost has an interesting way of going about it - there is a uncommon event for two free removals - but there's also the crown equips which guarantee the card will be in your opening, pre-fight hand, so they don't use up your turn to play the first time. This is best used on units to bolster your forces, but if I get enough of them in a run I'll put it on a powerful set-up item, like a once-per-battle status buff. Either way, you get to have your cake and eat it by having more cards that don't impact your deck size (unless you have to recall a unit, which is fine).

Monster Train and StS both scratch very, very different itches. StS is where you are the hero, Monster Train is where you are the general.

Brief grump: Slay the Spire's bosses are not hard counters. They're soft counters that use punisher style mechanics, and all of them are card quality tests. Time Eater asks that every individual card you play be high value. Awoken One asks that every power you play be impactful and scale you more than it scales Awoken One. Donu and Deca ask that you scale fast enough to out do them, while being able to deal with status flood and them having artifact stacks to stop you immediately blowing them up with poison or similar tricks.

An infinite deck can beat Time Eater. A power deck can crush Awoken One. Dwardly decks can still take down D&D. If they were true hard counters, these decks would always get crushed. I've had Awoken One fights where it's had north of an extra 30, even 40 strength from my playing powers... and i came out of it with a Perfect, meaning I never lost a single drop of hp to the boss.

I will freely agree that mechanically, time eater is not fun, and the Heart does a better version of what it asks in my opinion (I dislike anything that takes control away from the player).

This is a personal bugbear of mine about StS talk, because I think it gives a wrong impression about the game - bad decks getting killed by bosses who test you on multiple avenues is not hard counters, it's just the game being intentionally challenging. Especially on A20 when you know you have a 66% chance to see any given boss, you learn to build decks that can cope with anything the game throws at you, an have a gameplan for things going south (Usually this just means potions). And sometimes, very rarely, you know you're fucked and just have to pray you get lucky.

Anyway! I do really like Mosnter Train's two clan mechanic. it's the sort of thing I'd like to see more of in this space -Roguebook was so sad because it could have been that, and instead was just super parasitic with it's mechanics.

My phone is juuuuuuussst old enough that it doesn't play StS too well on Android, which is a real pain, but also probably good that i dont play more spire than i already do.

It's super weird because I straight up can't kill them. I've beaten them with shotguns, pistols, thermal katanas. No matter how I win, they just get knocked down, and even if I take a shot at them while they're on the ground, it doesn't seem to register. They always survive, according to the mission.

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust
