It’s interesting how recently Doggerland was inhabited by people. They’ve found tools and textiles in digs there.

Luckily they could escape to the mainland before it sank

These days doggers can be found throughout the land

    It's an SSD

It's a comparatively recent install (around January, I think, but it's only been used a couple of times since then)

the install is recent but is the SSD old?

depending on the brand and age of SSD there's a very good chance you're dealing with some unlucky firmware and large number of aging or bad blocks on device - something that consumer drives notoriously handle poorly after a certain point in the usage lifetime of the drive.

Sometimes kids act like shitheads over screen time or after screen time, and honestly you just don't want to hear about it.

Interactive things are usually better for behavior. Kids tablet PBS games etc.

We actually just took a week off TV because my son was having trouble focusing in school and we thought it might help. Unclear if it did, or if other factors did,but his teachers said he was doing better.

So we told them they could watch TV on the weekend, but we will probably have no TV or tablets during this week again and see how it goes.

I think the easy out is actually just letting them watch as much TV and stuff as they want, because that's what they beg for. But that's def not the recommendation. You can definitely tell if you have a sick day or something and let them watch 5 hours of TV that they are all zombed out and it's not good for them.

Anyway, are you Daddy Tumin soon? Is that what I'm learning here?

The machine is somewhere around 10-12 ish years old

Ellie's always in the room with us when she's watching videos. I'm always listening. If I hear something that is bad/wrong I tell her to such videos and then we have a chat about why what was being said/done was bad and why it upset mummy.

She's also had relatively unlimited screen time since she was little. She willingly turns it off to play for hours on end, and has for years. There are times that I limit her, usually if she's already in a foul mood, and she fights it a bit, but then just goes and does her own thing. She's getting a bit more limits at night, her screens are off 30 minutes before bedtime starts, and that's been good for sleep.

We pick and choose our battles. She's learned heaps and heaps from watching videos. Has been given more questions to ask, ways to be creative in her play, and learned concepts that I never would have thought to teach her as early as she learned them (thank you magic school bus and Storybots).

But as a parent, there's no right answer. Whatever you do, somebody is going to motalise at you for being a failure in one way or another.

    I had a dream

    A very beautiful dream

There was a porn studio that did high quality pornos but it ranged from mundane “i’m sleeping over my friend’s house and now we’re fucking” to “woman robber steals old locomotive and proceeds to fuck her elf girlfriend in the dining car while being chased down by a wide ranging race crew of police on horses” to “a virtual fantasy world that is idealistic until a virus invades and begins to destroy the fantasy world”

And in the dream I had watched these videos before but in the dream I couldn’t find some of the videos

Then I woke up and realized I didn’t ever really experience these videos ever

But as a parent, there's no right answer. Whatever you do, somebody is going to motalise at you for being a failure in one way or another.

I do think there are generally recognized and scientifically based best practices. But it is confusing and hard to know due to a sort of "The Secret" like effect. Parents are desperate for answers or just want to do the best they can and this has caused there to be tons of pop Sci or straight up nonsense parenting advice. Books full of nonsense written by charlatans or well meaning but just wrong people.

It's also true that every family situation is different and we can all only do the best we can. For example, Jebustina would tell you that when she was really young, like our son is now, she was basically raised by TV. She didn't learn how to read, at all, until 3rd grade, because her parents didn't read to her.

On the face of that, without further context, you might think they are shit parents. But she was born very premature and with medical problems, making her an expensive baby, so her dad worked all the time. Two jobs basically her whole childhood. And just when they had that under control they had her brother, who is autistic. He is also a very large guy. So her mom basically spent all her time after that with her brother just making sure he didn't destroy the planet or commit violence against anyone, as well as trying to find answers and treatments for his condition.

They absolutely did the best they could, and Jebustina is just fine. In fact she has a masters degree now and is the breadwinner for our family.

So, would it have been better if things could have gone along the officially approved pediatric science course of events. Probably. And if it's and but's were candy and nuts, then we'd all have a merry Christmas.
