@The Zombie Penguin have you seen Cobalt Core? I've been playing a little bit of it - very spire-like in its DNA, but seems to have an interesting premise where you're navigating a starship with multiple characters. Also has a banger of a soundtrack.

I'm always perplexed by games that are going into multiple sequels that I've never heard of. Are they popular? They don't look that good and yet, they're good enough to make more sequels. I still don't get how CoD is so popular versus Rainbow Six or Counterstrike. They all seem the same to me.

All sorts of people play games, there are a bunch of genres I'm not interested in that are still popular enough to have gigantic sales numbers:

Cobalt Core does a good job of making the characters charming. They are fairly simple and straightforward, but their interactions are quick enough to get a character moment in and move on to playing cards again.

It's biggest issue is enemy/boss variety not quite matching the variety of builds/deck combinations you can have. You will memorize all the fights long before unlocking all the Memories. Unless some later unlock adds alternate bosses for each act.

I finished up Phantom Liberty last night, and I think it was a much stronger offering overall than the base game. With a smaller zone they're able to give it more character, all the gigs and side jobs are actually proper little stories and not just "go here and kill some guys," it's got some really cool setpieces and even some pretty great chats with Silverhand along the way. I think it really highlights this team's strengths when focusing on a tight story and their weaknesses when trying to build a giant city to wander around and grind faction rep in

It's very funny to me that Alan Wake 2 is one of my top 5 games of the year despite the fact that I actively dislike the combat and the controls for said combat. I am, once again, in love with a game where I find massive swathes of it unpleasant to interact with.

On Elden Ring again, a choice I don't understand is why they have you keep interacting with NPCs in order to advance the dialogue. Why split up their dialogue into distinct parts? Especially when you're going to essentially punish players who don't realise there's more dialogue left to say

If it helps, the Story difficulty mode is.... really easy. Like, "one shot kills on most enemies with the gun you start with, with no upgrades" easy

Edit: and I assume at some point they'll patch in the accessibility options they had for Control where you can independently set incoming damage values or just turn off death entirely

Wartales: came across some striking miners with very reasonable demands: better pay, a day off for their high holiday, and tunnels that don't collapse on them. Had a brief chat with the mine owner and told him if he didn't give the miners what they want I'd walk him back into the mine and let his rickety tunnels finish the job. Alan Wake 2. I hit the point of no return prompt and decided to go back and check for anything I missed.
Got into the lighthouse and got all the lunchboxes and rhymes. I feel like I've missed some manuscript pages or something because I still have missing gaps in the Cult of the Tree case even after Illmo told me everything. It is hard to check for everything because even though I have a charm that shows items on the map it shows things I've already interacted with so I can't use it to mark things off. Wish there was a SHOW ALL UNRETRIEVED MANUSCRIPT PAGES ON THE MAP charm. Also I got into room 108 at the motel. Thank you deer heads.

Alan Wake 2 was extremely good until the moment I started losing buy-in, at which point it was still solid but significantly weaker because the whole conceit kind of requires you to fully commit to the meta-narrative aspects.

    Ending section spoilers:
From the Summon Wake concert onwards, when they open the (second, much weaker) musical fight with a "this is fucking awesome" line before a pretty buggy/incoherent battle, I was no longer all-in with the game's nodding at the camera constantly. Then a final boss fight that was a straight repeat of the previous boss fight + mostly weak ending stuff (Saga's Dark Place was still excellent), capped off with a "this seems too easy, or is it?" cliffhanger to sell the DLC, and I was just... whelmed. Game's over, yep, not much else to say.

I also don't know if it was a glitch or missing a random paper or an intentional decision, but it didn't help that I ended the game with multiple main corkboard mysteries not only unfinished, but with key evidence from literally half the game ago still sitting there with a "can't use this yet!"; that and some other small stuff gave the ending a feeling of being unintentionally unfinished and weak instead of intentionally so.

It's very funny to me that Alan Wake 2 is one of my top 5 games of the year despite the fact that I actively dislike the combat and the controls for said combat. I am, once again, in love with a game where I find massive swathes of it unpleasant to interact with.

That's the horror game paradox, isn't it? If you make the combat too fun, it stops being scary and becomes Resident Evil 4, which is a great game but not really known for being very scary because you're too busy styling on fools with bullets and suplexes. Alan Wake 1 tried to have somewhat enjoyable combat, but the horror was muted as a result and turned into a spice. Resident Evil 2 Remake still has the perfect blend of "you should try to avoid unnecessary fights, but being in a fight doesn't suck".

That said, I do have much beef with the control setup when shit goes down. Putting run steady jog on the left stick button was a mistake, they should've left it as "hold dodge to jog" like in the first game. Also, I wish they'd kept the flashlight mechanics the same as the first game (shine light normally to hurt their darkness, boost to speed it up and blind them for a second). I know the game is saying "try not to get into fights" (which it betrays with occasional "you gotta fight now, no way around it" moments, which are thankfully rare), but improving the controls wouldn't have hurt the horror too much.

And yet, despite those gripes, I adore this game. The atmosphere, the setting, the characters, the visual aesthetic, the writing, the soundtrack, the compete and utter absence of cowardice, the continuous swinging for the fences: this game exudes pure confidence from a team wanting to go for goddamn broke, like it's the last game they'll ever make so they gotta get their spots in for the record.

Anyway, I just rolled credits and now I need a whole bunch of songs from this game in my music playlist like right the fuck now. Longer thoughts maybe later, but holy shit I loved this game that was, like the majority of Remedy games, made specifically for my weird brain.

PS: Shout-out to whichever dev named their pet 'Danny Devito'.

I also was missing those pages, and on the flip side had several pieces of evidence still marked "for later" that I couldn't put on the board. I think some of this stuff is for New Game+

Can someone confirm that stuff is for NG+? If so I’ll go on to the end. I found IGN has a checklist and location of every page so I was going to cross check it next time I play.

I just Platinumed it without all the manuscript pages. In fact, this is a way easier Platinum than the first Alan Wake, mostly because there's no abominable 'beat on the hardest difficulty' trophy.

NG+ hasn't actually been added yet, so I'm just speculating, to be clear. but they've said it will include some new narrative stuff

I'm always perplexed by games that are going into multiple sequels that I've never heard of. Are they popular? They don't look that good and yet, they're good enough to make more sequels. I still don't get how CoD is so popular versus Rainbow Six or Counterstrike. They all seem the same to me.

They're actually pretty different. They're basically on a spectrum.

CoD is more arcadey, faster combat; Counter-Strike is a little more slow and methodical, and Rainbow Six (at least the older games) leaned further towards realism where shots are super lethal and you need to do the tactical stuff of checking corners and what not.

Also, there are so many games out in the world, I'd find it weirder if there WASN'T some series I hadn't heard of that's now on it's 14th interation.

Actually won Cobalt Core my first time, though it was on normal. It wasn't trivial - I had a nice combo going where I kept my movement topped up with the pilot, shielded up with the engineer, and used a stun charger to rev up to disable the end boss's big cockpit gun, only taking chip damage from some of the peripheral stuff. Landing a couple parries (damage = current outgoing damage from all enemy cannons) was also a tremendous help. Now I'm wondering how you play a game without the pilot - I imagine one of the other characters is going to get some movement, other than the gunnery officer's instant shifts.

You pick your crew of three and everybody has their own selection of relics and new cards they drop into the pool, which is conceptually pretty nifty. Though my favorite thing is meeting the shipyard from the studio's previous game, Sunshine Heavy Industries, who will slightly bulk out your hull but also randomize the order of your ship modules, or stick in a scaffold which widens your ship but puts a hole in the middle that you can try and slip enemy shots through.

"The Zombie Penguin" have you seen Cobalt Core? I've been playing a little bit of it - very spire-like in its DNA, but seems to have an interesting premise where you're navigating a starship with multiple characters. Also has a banger of a soundtrack.

Seen, but i havent yet played. Seems interesting enough? I'd need to see if it fits into my budget and things before i commit.

Is counter strike on consoles? I feel like that's the biggest difference for cod and cs, but I might be wrong

And, I guess, if it is on consoles then it's still the same issue, as someone who used to play a shit ton of cod on consoles, I've never heard of cs on consoles, so if there's no player base it doesn't really exist.

I completely forgot there was a deadpool game I never played, checked if it was backwards compatible and its not. Damn. I guess companies don’t like money, I assume it’s a license thing tho of course

Yep, once the Ryan Reynolds era began the license for that game was allowed to lapse, so you can still re-download it if you owned it once-upon-a-time, but no new purchases or BC capability on consoles.

It had some fantastic writing, though the action itself was a bit slapdash, but the first mission was an assassination op where a bouncy castle features prominently.

I'm enjoying my time with the base game way WAY more than I was expecting to, so I'm super psyched to get to Phantom Liberty with everything I've heard of it

Global Offensive was actually on consoles, but it's clearly built for the PC audience and has had no draw on consoles. But also, it doesn't need to be that way, Rainbow Six has been on consoles all along.

by design, counter strike has no aim assist, so it's pretty miserable to play on any sort of controller

Dredge so far seems pretty cute but also quite easy to just grind out until you have the best gear before tackling anything because there’s no real upkeep. Still, really cute concept and I’d love to see more odd genre horror, not everything needs to be in the Resident Evil mold.

    We're all in this together
