just watched the first parts of breaking bad. not seeing the hype quiet yet but its fun enough
it definitely takes a while to get going, but also it's one of those shows where being a week-to-week thing with discussion and predictions was a huge part of the experience, so don't be surprised if you don't really connect with it the same way now

I will note that Breaking Bad is an EXTREMELY slow burn up until a specific turning point in Walt’s story.
Then it starts to cascade

My biggest issue with Shogun so far has been the lack of a compelling villain. I mean, of course, there's the whole council of regents, but they're mostly a bunch of bumbling dummies vying for power. They were clearly outmatched in every area (except maybe manpower) by Toranaga. Even Ishido is shown to be relatively cunning and shrewd, but not particularly effective as a bureaucrat who can't even wrangle his regents for a vote half the time. There's no real doubt that when push comes to shove, Toranaga would come out on top.
Then episode 6, "Ladies of the Willow World"
pulls off one of the best True Villain Reveals I've ever seen. Where Ishido is constantly presented as a thorn, an obstacle to overcome, Lady Ochiba is immediately seen as a force of nature. A presence that inspires awe and more than a little bit of fear. Her presence is met with tension, and everything quickly reorients to orbit around her.
Then the almost horrifying climax where she talks about how she endured what she did so that she could compel fate to look at her so that she could rip out its eyes.
The entire lynchpin of the story is just immediately recontextualized. Shogun doesn't hinge on the death of the Taiko like we've been lead to believe for the last 5 episodes. It all stems from the assassination (and to be more accurate, the assassination plot) of Kuroda. It's a swift and subtle change that casts everything we've seen so far in a different light, and makes the whole story significantly more personal.
What a backstory. What a reveal. What a villain.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

Slow Horses should be back sometime in this Fall too for season 4.
Very excited for the new season because, as I realized after rewatching both The Matrix and Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula this month, it's basically going to be
It's Dracula vs. Agent Smith, AKA Keanu Reeves' greatest nemeses, squaring off against each other.
Slow Horses has quietly become a real favorite show of mine and this is the first I’m hearing of this and I’m vibrating with excitement
My understanding is that Shogun (the show) so far already covers the entirety of the book, so you're free of spoilers if you want to read it. Which of course makes me a bit nervous about season 2 but should be interesting to see what they do with it.
Oh whaaat, they’re doing another season? I thought they said they weren’t gonna! That’s a shame, it was a perfectly contained story, I thought
Brian Cranston race walking on Malcolm in the Middle has slayed me.

That episode is basically the only specific thing from that show I still remember, it was so perfect.
I have a half-formed idea in my head for if I ever have the motivation to do a cosplay of sonic the hedgehog as racewalking Brian Cranston.
Gotta go fast.
Within the rules.

Went to go cancel my HBO Max sub (because my annual sub is up this month anyway) in order to switch to the new 3-way HBO/Disney+/Hulu bundle to save a couple bucks, and HBO offered a huge discount to re-up for a year.
So keeping them all separate works out to $22.66 a month, vs $29.99 a month for the bundle.
Pricing is so stupid.

I just cancel every streaming service I sign up for immediately after I get billed for the month etc. That way if I'm just not using it later I won't even notice it's off. If I go to use it and it's no longer on it's easy enough to resub. And I won't have paid for however many weeks it was dead. Plus, it's pretty common for them to auto offer free months to resub or half price for x amount of time etc. Just by having canceled it.

I’m still debating canceling most of mine. Amazon I’ll always keep because I make money back with the free shipping. The rest though…meh. If I keep one it would be Hulu.

Just do it. Everything is easy enough to renew and you will find out quickly what you can live without.
We cancelled Disney plus because of the massive data breach over there and just set YouTube TV to record the shows they wanted, all done.

I am pleased that this weird book written by a weird dude might get the Twisted Metal treatment it deserves.
I am less pleased to learn that there is another Game of Thrones spinoff in the works, but it doesn't really effect me one way or the other, so this news is a net positive for me, Honest Jedoc.
Michael C. Hall will be narrating for Young Dexter, I mean Dexter: Original Sin, the already announced Dexter prequel series.
...he'll also be starring in the newly announced Dexter sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection.
I never watched the first Dexter sequel series, but I heard it was bad, so maybe they're going for a second mulligan on getting a good ending?
I thought I heard he very clearly died at the end of that first sequel season. Perhaps the Resurrection title is literal and we're going supernatural?
re: ending of the Dexter revival season
It honestly wasn't bad! Much better than the last couple seasons of the main show, but not up to the show's best at all. But yes, he unequivocally died, but a distinct hook was left to follow his son who was already well along the path to following in Dexter's footsteps.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust
@cello and i had a lot of fun with the dexter revival series
it felt dumb as hell in the same way the good parts of og dexter felt dumb as hell
Really cool setting as a nice contrast to Miami, too. And, you know, Clancy Brown can't help but kick the shit out of every scene he's given.
even at its worst,.dexter always knew how to nail a guest villain.
my only problem with the setting was it was infinitely more interesting than the show it was in, but i did appreciate how much they did to grow that world that didn't end up mattering as much as it should
