Recommend me some comic books

V1mV1m Registered User regular
#3 Nephew is turning 8 this year. He's not nearly as compulsive a reader as his brother #2 nephew, but he does like books, particularly comic books. He's also kind of conservative when it comes to choosing new books; he like what he knows he likes.

His current favourite is the Bunny vs Monkey series, about which I know nothing other than I was tasked to buy him The Impossible Pig last year.

AFAIK he already has all the BvM books. Penny Arcade, I ask thee: Recommend me comic books suitable for an 8-11 year old (he's pretty sharp and has no great problem reading books that are "older" than 8 - he just likes comic books), because I'm gonna take him to a comic shop and I want to make some suggestions.

I don't know what Bunny VS Monkey is, but I was absolutely devouring all the Calvin and Hobbes I could get my hands on at that age

I bought his mother the Calvin & Hobbes triple hardbound boxset a decade or so ago. He cannot have access to more C&H than he already does.

PS she got super excited when she opened the present and open the first book so fast that she tore a page in front of me and I've never seen anyone look so guilty.

Anyway, Tintin or Spirou might work, but it's kind of retro stuff for today's yoof.

    What about Manga stuff?

To me the Manga stuff tends to be pretty dark and violent compared to the classic. To me the classics became classics because of the quality of the stories, why not try with just a few albums and see if they find a fan.

Manga for younger readers... hmm yeah I dunno, all my awareness of the medium is pretty heavily teen and adult oriented stuff. I'm sure manga aimed at younger kids must exist, but I don't know how to find it.

Spy x Family might be okay, but most of the manga I know I'd recommend for 12+. Viz has the first few chapters online for free if you want to check that it'll pass muster. Yotsuba&! is a good all ages manga, but it's a slice of life and comedy series, which your nephew might bounce off of.

Well if there are no surefire winners, the backup plan is: Ima just take him in to Winchester, let him eat half his bodyweight in cake then take him to the comic book shop and let him choose whatever he likes up to £100 or so.

Some other classics to check out could be Asterix and Obelix, as well as Lucky Luke. Maybe a classic Donald Duck collection from a good writer like Don Rosa or Barks?

Dogman (Dave Pilkey, guy who brought you Captain Underpants) has a similar-ish vibe to Bunny vs Monkey. Big hit with kids in the 6-8 year range.
The Magic Treehouse book series is coming out slowly as a comic. The first one got good reviews from my kids.
I think Bone is great, my kids just have no taste. Your nephew sounds cooler, go find the color version of Bone by Jeff Smith.
Will second the Don Rosa stuff, specifically the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.

Honestly aside from some stylistic choices on how large and often cleavage should be drawn, One Piece is pretty fun and from what I remember, relatively chaste.

In the event we went on a day where it rained the most it's possible to rain, and #3 Nephew picked literally every book that he wanted.

Also the nice American lady at the counter was most taken with the concept of 'practice birthday' and has promised to spread the Good Word.
