@electricitylikesme what's your preference over SNMP?

I'm thinking REST APIs for configuration and syslog for monitoring, but I'm curious what you think.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Depends on if they can get away with it I think

Saw a burlesque group at a MC rally and while they wore pasties at the show I saw them do in town a couple years earlier there was definitely no pasties to be found while on stage at a venue where the only security was made up of mostly sober bikers.

The upcoming DLC for EU4 feels a smidge bleh. It touches areas like Mesoamerica and the Holy Roman Empire, yet the stuff shown off in dev diaries doesn't feel like it's tackling the long expressed frustrations with those areas, specifically the outdated "primitive" status and reforming requiring being adjacent to a Colonial province, which is kind of a roll of the dice for when it happens. The growing suspicion is because stuff like that and how the HRE League War is designed is based in the code of the central game rather than in scriptable stuff like events or missions, they're afraid to touch it because it's a new team that's been working on it since 2021 and their first attempt at a hardcoded mechanic introduced an infamous game breaking bug so they've focused more on content than updating mechanics. Also the scope of the DLC feels pretty grabbag, covering bits of America and Central Asia and touching up countries in Europe. The fact dev diaries for a new untitled project whose map has been pretty quickly identified as mid 14th Century might be something to do with that.

I have my annual review tomorrow

I’ve only had my new manager for three months so I’m wondering how much of my “I’m doing the jobs of three people who’ve left in the last 18 months” she actually took on board from my self assessment

I’m hoping for a pay bump but I feel like it’s not coming

Pretty much. The problem with SNMP is it was designed when we had very limited onboard microprocessors in network devices, not full Linux systems. But then no one wanted to accept that limitation so for some reason it is also able to configure network devices, and then also has to be able to render tables, and then also has a whole bunch of non-standard datatype extensions etc. etc.

Like every spec for it is just a huge pile of "except if it's this device from this vendor, then you do this broken thing instead..."

And then no one properly supports SNMP v3 anyway (i.e. god help you if USM is involved and you need to login, it's basically "speak the magic words of the snmptools commands and claim purity in your heart").

Yep, I'm interested in your ideas and I'd subscribe to your newsletter.

@eddy I thought the story was well written and evocative - it feels like a hot, close little town in spain, I can imagine them working together in one of those tiny little european shops
I didn't see her assertion at the end that she'd been throwing herself at him? it seemed like the opposite, that despite thinking he was handsome, that they were far apart in age and she found him irritating?

I'm also not sure what the story was about other than the vibe - how people deal with grief I guess? the guy's silent about it, the two other women have it as part of their daily life, and she's secretive? idk, I'm not sure why she takes the bus with them every day until she accidentally gets to know one of them slightly, and then switches to her car

In my world I have to deal with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) a lot and fuck WMI. I wish Windows Server supported SNMPv3. Or (preferably) syslog!

There are third-party syslog agents for Windows Server but none of them are great.

It's obvious that Microsoft stopped giving a shit about Windows Server somewhere around 2012 or 2012 R2. That we've made it to 2024 without fucking native syslog support is fucking horseshit.

I read that "throwing herself at him" part as her throwing her grief at him, opening up in that way. Not any kind of sexual thing, but comparing it to sex because emotional vulnerability

I guess it is a meditation on grief, yes; I just really enjoyed the last word revealing that it was all directed to the (dead) reader
