Game 7, the two most overrated words in sports? I always get hyped for Game 7s, but they seem like they are 80% blowouts.

game 7s in the other rounds are fine, in the finals they are universally awful games though.

this denver minnesota series is probably the last good series we’re going to have before the finals. i don’t think any series left in the east will be any good, and whoever wins this series is probably going to sleepwalk to the finals, i don’t see okc really offering much resistance.

Game 7 in the 2016 Finals is one of the greatest NBA games of all time

All of the Finals game 7s i can remember off the top of my head were great. Cavs-Warriors, Heat Spurs, Lakers Celtics, Spurs Pistons. I cant actually think of a bad one right now.

Heat-Spurs game 6 was actually better, but 7 was also great.

Spurs Pistons was heavily underrated as an NBA Finals.

If you've seen the offensive fireworks so far, yes.

Cavs went in with negative confidence and the crowd has been near silent since the start of the second. This game is already over.

To be fair the players are making it hard to cheer for them. Two starters already in foul trouble and yet another game where they can't generate looks from the or make shots.

Maybe he's mad because Bickerstaff will still be the coach? He never clarified if he wanted them to win :)

I am super glad they gutted it out and also highly doubt this saved JB's job. The second half was totally winning in spite of the coach. The lineups while Orlando built their early lead were bonkers.

Recently this came across my timeline. I am currently in episode 3. They do really go down into the fine details of plays and stuff. I don't understand alot of it, but its pretty fascinating how intricate an NBA game can be.

I saw my die-hard Mavericks fan friend this weekend, along with his wife and 3 year old son. We obviously talked playoffs quite a bit, in the interim period where we're still allowed to be friends before the series starts on Tuesday.

As you might expect, his son is a big Mavs fan as well, and a fan of Luka in particular. He mentioned that his son has been imitating Luka from time to time, to the point where he can sometimes convince him to "do the Luka" because what he's seeing on the court is engrained in his impressionable 3 year old mind.

Before I could make the joke, my friend confirmed that yes, "doing the Luka" consists of miming hitting a shot, then falling over on his ass in comic fashion every time. This is of course now my favorite thing.

So when Luka starts flopping like a fish in our series on Tuesday, remember to think of the impressionable young children he is ruining with his antics.

yes but you're forgetting the most important part where he decides spending the next play on the wrong side of the floor complaining about not getting the call is more important than playing D

I really enjoy the Lebron/JJ podcasts (though in subsequent episodes, Lebron's legs get distractingly buff and shiny). I sometimes pick up actions or plays that I try to play out in pickup. It always fails because typical pickup BBIQ, even with guys in their 30s like mine, is not super high. Still, I've been trying out some Gortat screening, which is fun, and I want to see if we can get some good looks off of Clipper Down.

I also get some of that stuff from Thinking Basketball. I've definitely been incorporating more stampeding into my game, pickup defenders are rarely prepared to defend a catch on the move like that, and I've also been trying to do some of the DHO stuff with my point guard, but he kind of sucks at it. Hahaha

So, the media cycles are drooling all over Ant, and basically already trying to anoint him. It feels like they are working overtime to use him to fill that "next face of the league" void.

Like, I see it, he's fun, he's crazy athletic, he's got charisma for days. But, it just doesn't feel like he is at that level. He scores 25 ppg, ok, that's good, but not like best player in the league good. His efficiency is average, he does an ok amount of playmaking and rebounding. It feels like his highlights are elite, and he has been balling out early on in the playoffs here, but all of this feels premature. Like, I'd like to see him be at least top 10 in, you know, ANY category before we anoint him.

It feels like its just old media guys who fucking love the MJ/Kobe/Vince/TMac/DWade athletic scoring guard archetype, and want to make him the best player when he's really more like a back third all-star at this moment.

Of course, the playoffs are making this take look silly, and if its a harbinger for things to come, we'll see. But I want to see more than 5 games of All-NBA level play before I elevate this guy over someone like Jokic, Giannis, much less the Embiids, Lukas, Shaes, Tatums of the world.

Looking at just his stats is ignoring where the hype is truly coming from though. Not only is he very athletic, but he can do the kind of midair wizardry that we truly haven't seen since Jordan. Even notoriously skeptical Drew Magary at Defector can't resist flirting with heresy.
But most of all, watch the hangtime. It was when I watched Ant Edwards make a basket while falling in midair, and with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope yanking his body nearly parallel to the court, that I recognized what I was seeing. What I’d been missing. Jordan could jump a mile. You might recognize a certain brand logo that celebrates that fact. But a lot of players can jump. It was what Jordan could do while jumping that made him superhuman. He had so much instinctive body control that, when he took flight, it felt as if a time portal opened up for him and him alone. Jordan could do things in half of a second up there that any other NBA player needed five seconds to do. Real Santa Claus shit. That was the difference, and I couldn’t articulate it until I saw Ant demonstrating the exact same power the other night. This was the play that made me realize that I’m gonna have to watch every game that Ant plays for the rest of his career, regular season or postseason.

highlights are elite is what it takes to be the face of the league tho. it was going to be ja until he decided to be the dumbest idiot in the world for similar reasons.

    aeNqQM9.jpg
  • burboburbo Registered User regular
I agree, but the elite highlights, while being the best player in the game (by a fairly wide margin, in fact) was what made Jordan, Jordan. Like, whoever is the "next face" will, in the end, be determined by winning titles. And maybe the wolves are on a decent path for that. I just think its silly how people are already talking like he's the best.

  • TelMarineTelMarine Registered User regular
I agree, the hype train behind him is in full gear, especially with the Jordan comparisons. Let's cool it, especially for Edwards' sake. Why bog him down with Jordan comparisons...let the man work. In due time he will show whether he belongs with the greats.

The one thing Jordan and LeBron have in common (besides not being physically broken down or on the verge of it at the start of every post season) was that they were the one player you could not be without during their championship teams.

Jordan especially was surrounded by some great players during his title years, but if you took either of them out of the equation the team wasn't going any further then it had already reached.

In today's philosophy of having 2-3 superstars to be considered a contender I don't know who has that status.

Joker? He's won a title, might be the best comparison if they can get more titles over time.

Embiid certainly is the center of Philadelphia's universe but I don't think his body is up to the task - he obviously needs someone else to take the weight off him because it's just too much. Ditto Giannis.

Brunson on the Knicks fits but their ceiling is probably the fifth game of the East Coast finals barring a Celtics collapse, then it's getting murdered by whoever comes out of the Timberwolves series

Joker won a chip without a superstar teammate. Steph won one before him without another superstar as well. Kawhi won the one before that "by himself"...

But yeah, I think Ant has the athletic highlight reel that makes him very media-friendly. He's not a Top 10 player and probably isn't even the best player on his team, but he has filled a leadership and playmaking vacuum that was on what was previously a very flawed Timberwolves team.

Gobert scaring players from driving into the paint isn't memeable but Ant dunking on someone is.
