Looks pretty sedate for blockbuster season, really. Very few action extravaganzas now that The Fall Guy and Furiosa have diminished and gone into the west, yet curiously deep on prestige horror. Whatcha got an eye out for?

I see people say about Furiosa that

It explains everything about her, but it actually doesn't. There's was supposed to be some stuff about her being the only woman who can put Rictus in his place and thus the only person Immortan Joe could trust to protect his wives. It explains why she's in the position she is in at the beginning of Fury Road and they just kind of.. gloss over it. She captures Dementus, it flashes forward by like a decade and she's ready to bust the wives out. Given Furiosa is a lot more.. personable in Fury Road, I feel like there's a huge ass gap in this movie of her going from the nobody unemotive who took out Dementus to Immortan Joe's right hand who actually feels like a developed character.

Chall

Fall Guy was pretty good. It probably won't be an Oscar favorite but it was a fun action movie.

There is also a minor gag throughout the movie of

Gosling's character repeatedly trying and failing to get a goddamn cup of coffee

and there was a dude sat behind me in the theater who was losing his shit laughing every time it happened. Sometimes the theater experience can be good

Yes, Hudson Hawk has a bit where the main character is trying to drink a cappuccino from the first five minutes of the movie all the way through to the end of the final scene.

It was crafted with more care and way more interesting that the vast majority of action movies made in the last decade, and a bonus, it wasn’t a marvel movie!

The Dip was horrifying, yes.

Actually a whole bunch of body horror at the end of that one. Plus it had effectively the same plot hook as True Detective Season 2 lol.

If you, like me, watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit when a child...the early Dip scene where Doom melts a sentient cartoon sneaker, and the later bits where he turns full Joker psycho were pretty terrifying!

Hudson Hawk is an underappreciated bonkers masterpiece. Flawed AF but it's still...just incredible to watch what got made.

Hudson Hawk was a funny movie and the villains were great, Sandra Bernhard does real well, Richard Grant does his thing and is pretty fantastic. Felt like people had it out for Bruce Willis at the time.

Hudson Hawk is one of those movies I would always watch when it was on, but never felt the need to seek out for a watch. It's an enjoyably silly movie with a great cast who know exactly what they are making.

I don't think I've ever watched Hudson Hawk all the way through, I remember it being on Saturday afternoon reruns and jokes about how long it was on sitcoms like Urkle's TGIF show. I'm interested in seeing if they can make a good Alien movie this go around, it doesn't seem like it should be as hard as it has been but anything with a fan base is sure to be fraught anymore.

Moviepass, Movie Crash (HBO) is a new documentary that chronicles the rise and fall of, you guessed it, Papa Johns. And it's fine, everyone here probably remembers how stupid the company got, but it tries to act like the concept would have worked out fine if it had the original founders of the company still working for it as opposed to the usual hollywood loser investors/capital finders who became the face of the company and were clearly jacking up the stock price for their hedge fund buddies. And weirdly it tries to throw racism into the situation as the reason moviepass failed where yeah but no, the concept of moviepass was never going to work. In order to get a big cash infusion from some investors they needed to increase subscribers, so they went from $40/month to $10, and it wasn't even making money at $40 to begin with. There's a lot of pretend post-nut clarity going on but you could see a mile away these new guys that were brought it were going to just accelerate the fall.

By the end the documentary tries to act like moviepass is what was saving movie theaters, so many people were seeing movies, yet they never talk about how going to theaters meant more revenue from concessions or anything to the benefit of theaters, not even an attempt to pretend that was the case. No, they were heroes of cinema (one dude would watch 30 minutes of Avengers at a theater one day, then the next, then the next, this is psychotic behavior), and the social media clips they pull to show people raving about the service feel hella fake. At this point, there is probably a whole subset of "influencer" actors who are paid to do shitty line reads about whatever to put into documentaries about a topic, and you'll never know if they're real or not because everyone is a vapid narcissist these days. There's also an employee interviewed who has a severe case of forced vocal fry from which you need a cast a level 1337 protection spell on your ears.

In all, this was an average documentary, felt less like an HBO doc and more like a Netflix doc, which was concerning in the bigger picture as HBO continues to be dragged down by Discovery and Max. If you want a better HBO doc watch Listening to Kenny G, that was fantastic.

So my thoughts on Furiosa

Its no Fury Road and while i liked it and thought the acting was superb, it was less than the sum of its parts. The film was at least 30 minutes too long and some scenes could have been condensed or combined. Also bullshit we didbt see the war in the wasteland. CGI was used a lot more than in Fury Road, but generally blended well with the practical effects with a few exceptions related to deaths, but all of the fire related CGI was terrible. Each of the major set piece scenes were incredibly well done. My major issue with the movie is that themes have already done to death in the previous movies and yet the script takes so much time beating you over the head with them. Yes the wasteland makes people desperate, cruel and savage. It crushes innocence and everyone has suffered tragedies during the fall of civilization. Why does the script think having Chris Hemsworth spouting about how his life was ruined and his family killed serve as a justification for his actions? They do it over and over again. The first line of Fury Road boiled all of this down to a single line at the start of the movie "each one of us, in our way, was broken." Succicent and efficient story telling. I did like the end fate for Dementus and how the tree bearing fruit kindle hope and action in Furiosa to try and make the world a better place for the wives. Showing that good can come from evil - literally using an evil man as fertilizer to bring about something good and pure. Couple of other misses - why do we need the potential child rape story? We already know that character is evil and despicable. Also, the warboys didnt feel as compelling or passionate as Fury Road. They highlight their fanatacism but they lack the life and energy of Fury Road. Not sure if it was just more of them getting CGI killed or what. Couple of other wierd plot points regarding Dementus losing control over Gas Town, but then conquering the bullet farm? I did like the movie and the set pieces were amazing, i just wish it was Fury Road 2.0 and not what we recieved.

Kind of rambled there but I just have so many feelings about a good movie that didn't come close to making me feel the way its predecessor did.

Hudson Hawk was basically entirely panned by critics just being assholes. I was just a kid when it came out and I still remember that the singular immense gripe was that Bruce Willis was supposed to be an action star now, not a comedy star. It's got a flavor that I certainly understand if it doesn't resonate with everybody but dang, critics of the time were personally invested in bashing the film for not being an action movie.

And looking at his filmography, he was in exactly two action movies prior to Hudson Hawk, both of them Die Hards. And between Die Hard and Hawk, he did 2 Look Who's Talkings and Bonfire of the Vanities.

Also: apropos of nothing, but Blind Date is fucking hilarious and has peak John Larroquette.

Potentially a hot take but Bruce Willis is honestly a better comedy actor than an action movie actor.

That sense of timing and delivery is arguably what makes Die Hard work so well.

Hudson Hawk is a fairly bad movie. Critics were right.

It’s true that Bruce Willis has good comedy chops, though, when he’s not leaning too heavily on the oh so charming smirk that makes me wish Hans Gruber was a better shot.

The entirety of the Blind Date "moonwalk" scene never fails to make me belly laugh. Willis and Larroquette are absolutely perfect in that whole exchange.

There was a video by a group that followed youtube trends and production tips and stuff, and when the "big eyes" thing started, they investigated and found out it literally increased the average view counts by 30%. After describing how much they hated the trend, they basically said "but we cant ignore the growth, so were going to start doing it too"

Ryan George is a genuinely talented comedian that puts out consistently good work. Also a lot of the Pitch Meetings are really less about dunking on the films so much as dunking on the whole system in general.

But his non PM stuff is also really good. Especially the naming things skits.

The only bad thing about pitch meeting is the big eye thumbnails. The rest of it is (mostly) toothless honest humor about the industry and ridiculous shit that either an editor, writer, or director just didn't care about
