Wife just got offered a promotion with a substantial raise!

This is the culmination of years of work on her part, going back and getting her Bachelor's *while* working full time, applying to job after job, lots of interviews and missing out by the skin of her teeth. I legit am super proud of her and am so happy for her!

I'd be lying if I said it also didn't sting the tiniest bit, but I know that's just pride fuckin' with me so it's easy to let those thoughts just drift down the river without grabbing on to them, but I'm still annoyed when I see them floating down the river of my mind.

For reals though, this will be her first time with a job where she can set her own schedule, has flexibility with time off, and isn't just a shitty reactive call center type job. She's going to love it and be awesome at it and I'm super excited for her and what's ahead of her.

There was an old lady up the road from us that kept everything as cash because of this. Instead of putting that in the reach of the feds in a bank account, it was all cash (she lived through the depression). She was ultimately too disabled to hold down a job but hated relying on people constantly. So, her family would give her money and she'd save a little bit of it.

She had something like $70k in cash in her house when she passed.

If one country gets over a certain medal percentage threshold they should postpone the next Olympics for 8 years to let the other countries get better

Didn’t the USWNT for basketball beat a country by 100 this year?

I feel like precision shooting is different than bump stocks and drum mags unloaded into the side of a rusted car.

We need a biathlon competition where you've gotta ski and then shoot an elk target with a .300 Win Mag and then ski over and process an actual dead elk left by Olympic staff

First one back under x % of wastage wins

Some of L.A.’s poorest families received cash assistance of $1,000 a month as part of a 12-month pilot project launched nearly three years ago. There were no strings attached and they could use the money however they saw fit.
Participants in the program experienced a host of financial benefits, according to an analysis co-authored by University of Pennsylvania and UCLA researchers. Beyond that, the study found, the initiative gave people the time and space to make deeper changes in their lives. That included landing better jobs, leaving unsafe living conditions and escaping abusive relationships.

    this shit works!
Beyond that, it’s not clear where the next round of funding would come from. Price expressed hope the city would continue to support the effort through the general budget.

“I don’t know how realistic it is that it’s going to be $40 million again,” Price said. “But I think it’s realistic that we could receive something.”

    better discontinue it!

    https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-07-31/study-details-what-happened-when-la-residents-were-guaranteed-1000-dollars-a-month

study after study ending in the "unprecedented" result that this shit works

    UBI absolutely works

I fear it is one of those things that can never be widely adopted because it seems to run up against something deep in most people

There's a substantial fraction of people who, deep down, hate to see people other than themselves receiving help (we call them "conservatives" most of the time). So they will be against it. And a lot of those people are poor themselves. It is not rational.

Then there's another substantial fraction (I think larger) who, when under stress, cannot stand to see other people receiving help they are not getting themselves. So any UBI will be absolutely hated by these people if they aren't getting it. The fiercest opponents of the UBI are people who are poor but aren't receiving it for some reason (eg: just barely not poor enough or not living in the "trial area").

Those two groups together are a large enough bloc to make any sensible elected person not want to take the risk.

Isn't it not universal if some people don't get it?

it's universal because you get it if you need it

Can't tell if this is a joke or a serious argument but, I don't think that's how that word works bud.

Could we combine fishing and rodeos? That would solidly lock America in.
