this is the best meeting of all time. 2 groups didn't show up on time. One we are waiting for and another just never responded to the meeting and we need both for the meeting to happen. So we've been sitting in silence for like 10 minutes waiting for phone calls/etc. Nobody has spoken a word. It's beautiful.

    I need it!

    Back in 2002!

I remember when Panasonic started coming out with their GH line of cameras, and I ended up getting one because people figured out a way to hack the firmware to allow for higher bitrate recording. Naturally, this came at the risk of crashing the recording because the cards weren't rated fast enough to handle the extra bitrate spikes.

Then Panasonic sold a $50 upgrade to allow for recording in an ungraded log format (Which may have been for the GH3 and not the GH1, I forget) which was largely useless because it was still only recording to 8-bit files so the grading latitude was pretty minimal.

If I had any idea whatsoever for something to shoot I'd try doing more phone work these days. Curse my lack of imagination / old school production mentality!

Oh yeah the early days of digital were dire and full of technological limitations. It would cost me the better part of a day just compressing dailies from a shoot.

When I got my Sony a33 I thought that was the be-all of prosumer grade

Now for a few thousand dollars you can shoot like 8K/120 full frame if you want to

I'm curious what the workflow is like for that, what kind of editing suite you'd need. That's gotta eat up a hefty amount of disk space.

But also only a maniac is shooting slo-mo all the time for narrative projects.

No idea, but I'm glad I don't have to deal with it.

Dynamic range/latitude, efficient codecs, and syncable timecode are all more useful features than shooting as big and slow as you can at all times (in addition to knowing how to light a shot, get good audio, move a camera, etc), but I like that it's available as a starting off point for people these days.

I have taken my Apple Watch Ultra diving. I wonder what percentile that puts me in.

The dive master was like "whoa holy shit" because most diving watches are crusty and old and also difficult to read underwater and this was like, high contrast full color at depth, it was perfectly accurate, it had good surface interval timing, and it showed things like my pulseox and the water temperature.

It's actually a really good dive computer and survived like 10 dives no problem.

A few years back we switched to using eneloop rechargeable batteries for everything around the house. Even the original ones we bought then still work great. And it's nice to be able to just swap batteries as opposed to waiting for a charger.

Both kids (6 and 8) have been playing computer games on my wife's and my old desktops...I want to say the machines are about 10 and 8 years old respectively. Just playing flash games (er, whatever the post-flash equivalent) and a handful of smaller Steam games like Portal Knights and some kids games. They have been chugging pretty slow, so awhile back I did the arduous task of factory resetting them and putting on a fresh install of Windows 7. First try on my daughter's computer I opted for 32 bit because I figured it would run better, only to find out that many steam games, even really simple ones, require 64. So we factory reset it again and put on 64 bit. Can't tell if performance has significantly improved.

Well yesterday I went to do the same on my son's computer and it just won't install right. We wanted to do it because Steam and most of its games don't officially support Windows 7 so while many of them would still run, any of them that ever got an update became unplayable afterwards. Well, the install of Windows 10 is just not working (just continually has an error and that says it has to restart) and now the computer that, at least previously could run browser games, is now useless unless I can figure it out. I feel genuinely bad because I know computer time is the highlight of his day and he actually plays really well with his sister most of the time. Trying to figure out if we can afford a Switch for his birthday, and just try to transition both of them to playing together on that. I definitely don't think the old computer is worth the time or effort to get it going. Is it even possible to get Windows 7 anymore? Maybe putting some super light opensource OS would be the way to go, but I really suck at this stuff.

Just a super bummer. I get unreasonably stressed by bashing my head into a minor project that takes hours of time and doesn't bear fruit. And I feel bad that my son went to bed with a working computer and woke up without one because I don't know what I'm doing.

windows 7 hasn't been officially supported in about half a decade, insisting on using it is the equivalent of just signing your computer up to be part of a botnet

realistically your best bet is troubleshooting a w10 install (what install media are you using? Did you try recreating it?) or going with a linux distribution like Ubuntu and cross checking https://www.protondb.com/ or the Steam compatibility guide to see which games are supported

or just let the kid try installing linux himself and turn him into a little nerd

That or a steam deck. But yeah windows 7 is 15 years old and there are a lot of apis that have been added in the meantime. So it's not just planned obsolescence why newer games wouldn't work (hell, win 7 was the first apis surface to even have CRITICAL_SECTION, coding before that was seriously stone age).

That said, it should be possible to get 10 working on that machine. If you pm me I can help out after work.

Oh, I'm certainly not surprised or sour that Windows 7 isn't working well or supported by the games. When I get home maybe I'll try to find the basic computer specs, because I really don't want to invest more time if it's a computer that just isn't capable of running 10.

Definitely don't try to install the 32 bit version of anything if the hardware supports 64 bit at all.

We all tend to forget that transition because it was fairly seamless and 32 bit executables run on 64 bit systems no problem but like, exactly 5 years after the transition, like everyone retired their 32 bit build toolchains and nothing supports 32 bit systems anymore. They're very abandoned.
