comp turning itself off

computer specs:
motherboard: bfg nforce 4 ultra
processor: amd
video card: nvidia6800gs
RAM: crucial RAM 2gig
Hard drive: seagate

Over the last few days my computer is turning itself off at random. I scanned it for a virus and nothing is showing. My motherboard was recently replaced because it was struck out in a power surge. Also, something of note, any time the PC is turned off, it requires a power supply reset for it to turn back on. Could this be a bad powersupply issue?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

no you cannot have a sig that size. especially with compression that crappy.

My first thought is that the power surge damaged your PSU as well, especially if it's actually turning off rather than restarting itself.

It could be a number of things. My families computer started doing this, so I checked to see if it was overheating. Turns out the fan on the power supply wasn't working.

If the video card is overheating, you would probably notice artifacts going on first. might now, so check to make sure all the fans are goin would be the most basic.

This is what happened to my computer. A new fan would've worked...but it was on it's last legs anyhow.

Put a stand up fan aimed at your computer and see if leaving that on it fixes the problem. I wouldn't suggest this as a permenant solution, but it can get you by a few days while you get a new fan.

exact same thing happened to my computer a few months back, I took it apart, cleaned it out, virus checkers etc etc etc.

It crapped out the most when trying to do strenuous things, like play a game or watch a movie

Only when I used it with the side off did I notice the fan wasn't going. I hooked it up to one of the 6 (wtf) other power sockets and it was back to its old self

Ok, so my bro made that post for me and he forgot to include something: Every since the new MB / Power Surge, any time the computer is shut off, I have to manual reset the power supply to get it to turn on again. Is this a sign of a going Power Supply?

I beginning to lean towards this.

This has happened to me twice in the past year or so... both times one of the two sticks of ram was bad, and the second time the power supply was also dead

If the RAM is 2 sticks, I'd suggest testing 1 at a time as a starting point just to get that out of the way; for power supplies you can buy a $10 psu tester thing that'll at least tell you if the supply is totally gone
