VLC Subtitles

I recently ripped the Letters from Iwo Jima DVD to my computer, and assumed that the subtitles for the movie would be part of the movie itself (i.e. not on a separate subtitles track as with most foreign movies). Bad assumption. But now I can't get to the DVD to rerip it. Is there anywhere that has good, properly synced subtitles that will work in VLC?

maybe you should have used google to find out if there are subtitles on the internet

because if you search for 'subtitles' in google you will get an entire page of results of sites that offer subtitles to download
with the exception of a wikipedia result

usually if you're "downloading" movies from most "torrent" sites they come with decent subbing.

but I'd go for Air's suggestion first since you already have the full movie.

What did you rip with? Most decent applications can extract subtitles too.

Funny this thread should pop up, I'm having the exact same problem, only I can't find my stuff on any of the websites. I've been trying to use SubRip to extract the subtitles, but I can't get VobSub/TextSub to accept them into VirtualDubMod. Is there a better program I should be using? I've tried all of the formats for subtitles short of typing them up myself or using the unwieldy OCR->.txt utility.

Had this issue in the past here is what I did.

    First you need some tools.

    VOB sub
    SRT to SSA
    Virtual Dub
The Subtitle Plug in for Virtual dub

Step 1 (note if the sub is already an SRT file skip to step 2)

Load up the .sub file into Vob sub. Select your language for the sub. then save it as a SRT. you will have to "teach" VOB sub letters at first. after a while it will ask you less and less for input. This process can take up to 30 minutes.

    Step 2
Next load up SRT to SSA and re-save the sub as an SSA file

    Step 3
Get he Subtitle plug in for Virtual dub. a quick Google search will find it for you. Extract it into the plug in folder for Virtual dub.

    Step 4
load up Virtual Dub open the movie file. then go to Video then Filters. Add a filter, select subtitle, Load your SSA file.

    Step 5

Play the file and make sure the subtitles are coming up. Save your AVI.

    Good luck.
