64 bit processor on a 32 bit OS?

Is it possible? I was thinking of getting a AMD Athlon 64 X2 and putting it on Windows XP Home Edition. Would I have to buy the 64 bit version of professional in order to get it to work with my system, or would the OS behave as a normal 32 bit system with the OS installed? Would my computer run at a significantly lower speed if I don't use a 64 bit OS along with it?

Thanks

(If there's a thread with this answer in it already, can you please link it to me? Thanks)

You can run 32 bit operating systems on an AMD Athlon 64.

You'll be absolutely fine running your processor on Windows XP Professional 32-bit.

32 bit OSs run just fine on 64 bit hardware.
