I've inherited my dad's 12" Powerbook. He didn't die or anything, his work just upgraded him. One of the reasons for the upgrade was that the internal slot loading DVD drive is totaled.
To send it back to Apple for a replacement DVD drive is still considerably cheaper than what it would have cost me to buy a new laptop in the first place, but I'm wondering how easy it would be to source the part and do it myself?
I've had a old PowerBook open before so I'm sort of familiar with poking around inside them but I can't remember how easy it is to safely remove the DVD drive. Nor am I sure what sort of DVD drive I should be looking to buy to replace it.
There are several places online to find tutorials on how to open these up and how to switch out components. I just did a hard drive swap on a 12" Powerbook a month ago and it wasn't too bad using the tutorial. I don't have the link to it but a minute or two on google should yield it.
