The book series is one of the most fantastic stories I've ever read.

At least, the very first one is. The second two are a little bogged down with the vehemently atheistic message of the books, but they're excellent nonetheless.

But the first time I read the Golden Compass? I loved it more than The Hobbit.

i have never read the book, but the story that my mind is inferring from those two pictures alone is quite possibly the greatest tale never told.

They should just change the name of the movie to Sam Elliott and Armored Bears.

It's awesome. It has zeppelins, machine guns, armored bears, witches, and all sorts of clever shit with an interesting twist to it. The book was sort of disturbing in a lot of places, though, so I feel like that'll be hard to convey in a children's movie.

I've never read the books but I bought Golden Compass along with Slaughterhouse Five when I went to Barnes and Noble the other day.

    I also bought Guards! Guards!

Which one should I read first?

Slaughterhouse Five, because it takes like two and a half hours and then you can really appreciate the awesomeness that is The Golden Compass.

I said it in the last thread for this movie, and I'll say it again.

I'm going to see this movie for the bear in the goddamn armor. Everything else will be pleasant fluff, so far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: Also, I have not heard of the book, until rumblings of the movie started up, big time, a couple months ago. Still haven't read it.

Perhaps with other bears in armour.

Anyway, The Golden Compass was a good little book. The rest kind of weakened, in my opinion, but still.

So, apparently the whole Church = bad won't be a message in this movie. Which sucks.

Also: I hate that goddamn golden monkey.

EDIT: Just watched the trailer, holy shit. But I thought her 'uncle' was supposed to be much more....wizard-like. I pictured him to be like a mean Dumbledore.

I've read all of the three books EXCEPT the last 20 pages of the third book, and it's been like 6 months since I put it down.

They're good, I liked them more than the Narnia books if that count for anything.

Armored Bears should have cleared everything up for you. Watch it again. Pay attention to the bears with armor. You'll get it.
