New "Free Energy" Source for nanotech

British scientists recently made an engine that uses magnets to capture natural vibrations ever present on our planet, and from them, create small amounts of power.

The device is under 1cm^3, and the output is measured in microwatts, but the fact that you can get this power for no fuel input, and therefore provide power to sensors in remote locations is a big prospect.

Furthermore, think of computing. No more need for small Li-ion cells on mainboards, you could pop one of these in in the same place and have a nearly infinite source of power. Same goes for any portable device with those cells: Palms, handheld game consoles, etc.

Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.

I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.

It's not really free, it uses the energy in the vibrations of the planet. Take the thing off the planet, and you're screwed.

We seem to be talking about free energy a lot at PA lately. :\

Is this the same thing that people on Slashdot were talking about taking a couple billion of and putting on giant rafts in the middle of the ocean? It seems to me that there'd be a lot more rocking around out there. ;-)

    Who doesn't want free energy?

The discussion has been done to death and ends up going in the same circles until acted upon by an external force.

It's not free, it's scavenging! This is like a 1/1000000th scale hydro dam... Fully renewable..
I think it's awesome.. The world is full of energy, we just need to find better ways to harvest it..
This is one of those ways.

The generator's creators say the generator is up to 10 times more efficient than similar devices.
    Its not new technology.

I'd say the up to 10 times more efficient part is pretty sweet. Sounds new/cutting edge to me.

That's not true, that would be impossible. There has never been a 100% efficient thread; slowly all of the mechanical discussion energy in a thread is converted to thermal flaming energy.

Now if only we could figure out how to use that to power our cars.

about 4 harnesses, some pizza on a stick, and you'll be good to go.

"Energy with no or negligible feedstock cost, including solar power, telluric power, water power, and wind power" -- Economic definition of "Free Energy" from Wikipedia. Of course true "Free" energy is impossible, the term is used to describe something that does not consume a fuel source.

That definition is retarded. By that definition, chopping down a tree and burning it is "free energy."
    Economists do not know science.
    Wikipedia does not know science.
Science defines it differently. No physicist will tell you solar energy is "free energy."

The hero and protagonist, whose story the book follows, is the aptly-named Hiro Protagonist: "Last of the freelance hackers and Greatest sword fighter in the world." When Hiro loses his job as a pizza delivery driver for the Mafia, he meets a streetwise young girl nicknamed Y.T. (short for Yours Truly), who works as a skateboard "Kourier", and they decide to become partners in the intelligence business.

Maybe we should just invent new terms.
