Odd... I just got a new Insignia 720 P (iirc, might be 720 I though) TV from my girlfriend about 3 weeks ago. Looks wonderful, I got my wii hooked up the day she suprised me with it. Looks amazing with the component cables.

But the problem is I downloaded Mario 2 for the VC yesterday thinking I'd have a wonderful time, but the color was freaking out. Seems all the VC Games have this problem, it will change from actual color it should be to several shades darker and back while moving amongs the screen. When I played Super Mario 1 you could see slightly imprinted in the background the VC menu in the background, as well as the Wii pointer hand.

Low and behold, I go back to anything else on the Wii and there is not even a hint of the slightest problem. Looks wonderful and spectacular all around, just those damned VC games. Problem sound familiar to anyone?

I heard something similar when my friend tried the zelda bonus disk for the gamecube that had zelda 1 and 2. Apparently it would mess up his tv, just like the NES version would because it was just emulating the original hardware. I presume the Wii does something similar. It's most likely just a compatibility issue with your tv. Have you tried using the composite cables instead of component?

This problem is caused by fact that VC's NES, SNES and Genesis emulators output their graphics in original, 320 x 240 resolution, and few modern HD-television sets have problems with 240p resolution. You can switch VC game into 480i mode by doing following:

    1. Start the game.
    2. Press Home button.
    3. Plug in your nunchuck.
    4. Find your way to the manual of the game.
    5. Press A, 2 and Z at the same time.
    6. You should hear "bling" sound, and the game is in interlaced-mode.

Of course, I'm not 99 percent sure if this does help with your problem, but it is worth trying.

Thanks, thats rather complex of a solution but I'll try it out when I get home from work. Do you know if I'd have to do that every time I play a VC game?

Yeah, unfortunately. It is also pretty annoying that Nintendo doesn't mention anywhere about this option.

So why don't they just automatically go to 480p like the N64 games. Also why the heck doesn't the VC give the option to have blackborders around VC games when your Wii is set to Widescreen. All the Wii games I have are widescreen so I'm not sure if there's an issue with normal Wii games that don't support widescreen.

It should automatically ask you, at least Metroid Prime and Pokemon XD do for me.

Semi-official answer that I got was that there would too bad drop in quality if first emulator would scale picture to 480p, and then HD-TV would upscale this picture into 720p / 1080p.

Playing VC titles on a 57" Hitachi Rear-Projection CRT does not generate this problem for me.

I can understand Nintendo not embracing HD, since it's not mainstream, and would just add unnecessary cost to the console. But sometimes, it feels like they're going out of their way to hamper it.

what trick is this you speak of?

And my PAL wii VC games will not run through component unless they are N64 or TG16 games but will run on composite strange.

I haven't had any problems with my Samsung 23" LCD

Insignia I'm pretty sure is a "value" brand sorta thing so maybe this problem is limited maybe with cheaper HD sets that may have more limited features?

Anyone with an off-brand set suffering the same sort of troubles?

I have a 32' Vizio that I use with my Wii component cables. No trouble whatsoever. Those 64 games look pretty damn good in 480p!

A Wii puts out SD video with an internal resolution of 640x480.
For a 640x480 signal to show a 4:3 image on a 16:9 screen, the 640 (or 320 from some old games) pixels on a single line should be compressed into the middle 480 pixels. This would lead to horrible scaling artifacts or really washed out blurry graphics. Scaling old pixel graphics like snes/nes by a factor between 1 and 2 is not a great idea.

It just doesn't work on some games. They're releasing updates for the option (I got one for DKC and SCV4), so it'll probably be added eventually.

And it saves the option for me - as a standard for every game, so I never have to do it again. I don't know where you get that from.
