In another setback for Microsoft Corp.'s unprofitable entertainment and devices division, the company says it is planning to spend at least $1 billion to repair serious problems with its Xbox 360 video game console.
On a serious note, how much does each repair cost? Does anyone know? :?:
In a related note that picture is totally turning me on.

Add to the fact he's in better shape then men half his age..
Judging by the fact you even care about the people on the other end likely means you'll be doing them a favour by calling. When I used to work tech for AT&T, getting one nice person made me almost forget the last 10 assholes. As long as you're pleasant, they aren't bothered. Unless you get a prick. Not much you can do there.
i kinda thought that part of the billion was going to a permanent solution for the rrod, aswell as the cost of fixing/upgrading the current broken boxes.

Jesus. Would it have killed them to have just stopped producing defective 360s? How hard does this have to bite Microsoft in the ass before it happens?
Meh I'm on my 2nd 360 (I know some folks have had worse luck) and I think its on its way out. Over the past few days the menus have been running reallyyyyyy slow and some of my arcade games have had some pauses/frame rate lag.
They didn't fix this bullshit with the elite either did they?

They have stopped producing defective 360s. The newest ones are completely free of the problem.
Apparently it had to bite microsoft this hard, because it's just happened. You know that warranty thing? Yeah, that was it happening.
How important is it to have the receipt from the transaction when I call?

and why are yo scared? they can't punch you through the phone
I don't want to have to stay on hold for like 3 hours. They probably got about a million phone calls about their warranty policy change.
In my experience, Microsoft's xbox Customer Support division has been very good. When I transfered xbox live from my xbox to my 360, I didn't have the card I used (it was in houston), my password, or my account number. Yet they helped me get it switched in like 20 minutes tops.

What did they do to fix it? Because last I checked they just started using an extra big glop of epoxy around the CPU and GPU on the elite models.

That would pay for the manufacturing cost of roughly 1/3 their entire marketshare. Where have we heard THAT number before?
$1B divided by the retail price of the core, 299, is 3.34 M. The premium I hear they are selling for a slight profit before other costs like marketing get in the way. So lets say 375. That gets you 2.6 million, or roughly one quarter their marketshare.
Where have we heard 1/4 to 1/3? Anyone?
I can only assume that it costs slightly less to fix one than it is to buy an entire new one, even at the manufacturer's price. That tells you how many 360's they figure they'll have to fix.

Then, when that^ didn't work, they started putting an extra heatsink and even a heat-pipe in the box when they repair it. I think Jerry linked a site that had pics of it.
I thought they had only done that to some 360s being sent in for repair in Europe? Are they now actually manufacturing them with this change/upgrade? I hadn't heard yet but it is definitely good news if so.

It should also be noted that the one billion dollar price came on the heels of them extending the warranty to three years for EVERYONE, and stating that the issue with the RROD is solved, more or less.
Also, we have a thread on this. It's pretty big, too.

1.05-1.15 billion dollars is what Microsoft set aside to extend their warranty to 3 years. It won't necessarily cost them that much to validate that warranty

Well, I called last night, and spent a grand total of 32 minutes on the phone. It's pretty long, yeah, but not horribly so. And aside from working through the lady's accent, the call was pretty much painless.

Huh, so that's why the lady sounded so happy every time I responded nicely.

Apparently $1 billion. There is a cost/benefit analasys that I can guarantee they've been pouring over, and the instant dealing with defective units the traditional way became more expensive than this new warranty is when they announced the change.

I'm mostly curious as to how much each repair cost and or how many repairs this kind of budget covers.

Oddly, my 360 has yet to receive any red light issues.
