I've got a bunch of friends that like to ttg but hate to glue and paint models, a prepainted games seems like the perfect solution. I saw a few boxes at FLGS and the models looked like good quality. Has anyone played this? How are the rules? Is it any fun?
The minis range from shitty looking to half decent, as with most pre-painted minis.

Every time I see this game I want to use those skinny guys with the knife-hands in my DEldar army as either Incubi or Grotesques. Then I forget about the whole thing because I just don't care enough...
Could someone who does care explain the underlying principles of the game please? Like, is it d6, d10 or what? so units have comparative stats like in Warhammer or semi-fixed rolls like in Epic?
I haven't played it myself, but I did watch a game a couple of my friends were playing at the club I go to. It is d6 based, and relies on fixed rolls rather than comparative. The number you need to hit in shooting is modified by range, but close combat values remain the same. Like warhemmer, you roll to hit, then roll to wound, but no armour saves. Honestly, the impression I got was of a simplified Warhammer 40k, with an emphasis on skirmish level tactics with maybe 1 vehicle. That said, this was jsut the basic box, so I assume that furthur releases and prehaps real terrain, rather than the board that the games comes with would make for an interesting experience. My general response so far is "meh". Also, the minis are actually pretty damn good for prepainted stuff. The ones in the box set were nearly on par with Citadel, with more realistic proportions.

See if I wanted a skirmish version of 40K, I could play combat patrol missions, or I could even play old-skool 2nd Ed, as I still have the books. If I wanted a simpler version, I could probably find a box of Space Hulk somewhere. These options are vastly more appealing to me than this new game for some reason, though it probably has a lot to do with knowing that Space Hulk is a guaranteed good time for all...
As for the pre-paints, yeah they do look pretty good, but then GW and these guys are both operating at the limit of two-part injection moulding. That they've found a sweatshop somewhere to turn these out pre-basecoated speaks volumes for their RnD but if that's all they've got to tempt me over, then sorry; must try harder. My shiny plastic toys budget is already spoken for...
It didn't really interest me that much either, it just strikes me as an inferior version of Warhammer 40k. It's trying for 2nd ed scale, but rules that are approaching LOTR levels of simplicity. In theory it should be an enjoyable, simple skirmish game, but jsut comes off feeling wrong.
Seems interesting enough that they've brought it out. I didn't think anyone could or would fiesably try and take on Games Workshop. Even Warmachine, the next best thing, is sorta dwarfed by the warhammers.

We hate you, Umbrella! How many secret laboratories can one company have? Where do you get them all, anyway?

Last I heard, Warmachine is larger than Warhammer FB.
Interesting to hear. What I really meant is that Warhammer seems to be more widely known, even if its by people who don't play (The ones who usually remark "Oh, you play that game with the toy soldiers?").

I'd hazard that 40k is bigger than WM and FB put together.

i too am curious as to how this plays, im a big fan of the pre paints and am looking into a sci fi game. something more fast paced then warhammer and not fantasy.
i just wish i could get into the therians, they just dont look cool if you ask me. the other 3 armies are looking definatcly good.

the starter set has very vanilla watered down rules similar to a clix game, you won't get a true feel of the game playing those rules. Try to get your hands on the real rulebook.

Wait, they don't include the full rules with the starter set? Lame.
Even GW manage that...
they are just the basic rules, that when you download the pdf mission files online as they go along they also start expanding the rules. or you can just download the 37 page rule book that comes with at 43 and give the game a try. wich is what im thinking about trying it out.
