iPod Woes (Help, ASAP)

I just got a new 30gig iPod video, but guess what? Windows won't recognize it. It says it needs new software and everything to recognize it. I try to auto search for it, but it won't! I fixed my sister's Nano the same way before ( same problem) but I can't remember what I did. Help, please.

Have you installed the software yet? Go to www.apple.com/ipod and download both iTunes and the iPod software (I think you can get them in the same package now) and install both of those before connecting your iPod.

Yeah I had the same problem awhile back trying to my old 3g iPod as a USB hard drive. Getting the iPod drivers should fix everything.

Didn't work at all. I upgraded to 7.3.1 iTunes and it still can't find the dadgum drivers. Are they in a different directory? Windows wants to look in the Windows folder.

If this is the first time you're connecting it, you need to install the actual iPod software first. At some point during the install, it will ask you to connect your iPod, and make you jump through a couple registration hoops (input serial # on the device, etc), and then it will install it's own drivers. Windows (AFAIK) does not have it's own drivers for the iPod - it probably just sees it as a usb drive by default.

It doesn't see it as a USB device in the Device Manager list. It's under "OTHER DEVICES." I don't get it. This is the first time I've connected THIS iPod to the computer, like I said I have a mini on here as well. Do I have to remove that or something?

Didn't the new iPod come with an iPod software CD? Put it in your CD drive and follow instructions.

Ok. I'm not fucking retarded. I've installed iTunes, there is no CD with the iPod because apparently everything is supposed to be "Plug-N-Play" with this damn thing. Not so much.

They stopped including a cd with the iPod, around the time they introduced the Video. I upgraded to one from a 3G and was surprised they included no software at all - so I just downloaded everything from Apple.

Weird, my 5G 30GB iPod Video which I got in May of last year came with a CD.

That was before they overhauled the iPod videos by including brighter screens and better battery life, I believe. Oh, and the newly designed earbuds.

Have you simply tried rebooting? I remember doing this when I got my first iPod, and it fixed everything.

    Did you go here:

    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

And download the update, and follow the directions exactly?

After upgrading to iTunes 7, did you reboot the machine?

Have you tried resetting the iPod?

This happened to me with my Nano. I spent seven or eight hours trying to fix it, and eventually just tried it with my basement computer and it worked there. No idea why, never could get it to work on my main computer.

Well my laptop recognized it right off the bat. Problem is that all my music is on THIS computer and I'm not on a network.

I think everyone may be overlooking that I do have another iPod set to my account. Would this have any affect?

    Shouldn't. Have you rebooted?

It shouldn't, you can have multiple iPods just fine.

Try this: Get it syncing with your laptop. Don't even need to get music set up, just get it syncing.

Now, try plugging into iTunes on your main computer. A message should pop up that says something like "This iPod is associated with another computer, do you want to change and associate it with this one?" Click "Yes" See if it will sync with the main computer now.

Twice now. I'm uninstalling previous firmware updates and iTunes itself.

Well, also it bugs me that my computer recognizes it as "OTHER" devices, like my Nano before, and not a USB device. I've used all 6 ports on my machine, too.

    Questions und suggestions:
Do you actually have USB 2.0 ports?
What kind or how old is this machine?
Is USB 2.0 Mode activated in the machine's BIOS?
Do other removeable drives work with the USB ports?

Try booting a Knoppix CD (or similar Linux Live CD) and take a look if the iPod shows up as removeable drive.

Ok, every time I plug it into Windows it says, "Install from..." whatever. Is there any certain driver that I'm missing from my shit or what?

What version of Windows are you running? Also sounds like you might have older USB ports, might want to try another port if you have more than one. It's obviously a computer issue if the Ipod worked on your laptop.

Are you plugging it into Windows with iTunes OPEN already? Try that, if not.

Also, what happens when you just hit cancel on all that windows crap until it goes away?
