Oh man, Clocky sounds like it could be the solution to my problems. I would so order one if they weren't backordered all the way into August.

I wonder if they thought to make it durable enough to survive being hurled across the room?

I also have the OP's problem, bad.

I have tried multiple alarms, alarms across the room, going to sleep earlier, all that crap.

Here's what I've realized: a lot of people overcome a lack of willpower with teamwork. When you're in AA you get a buddy who's also a recovering alcoholic, to keep you honest. The best way to maintain a gym routine is to have a gym buddy. Etc etc.

I have had moderate-to-good success with applying this system to oversleeping. If you have an early rising friend, start joining them for breakfast. If you share a bed with a partner, maybe you can wake up at the same time as him/her. If not, ask them to help you out and give you a phone call from where they work, and keep the phone where you can hear it but not where you can answer it in bed. You can have a little chat and that wakes you up past the point where you can just collapse back in bed.

It's a constant struggle, but the key is accountability. The fear of being shamed by another human being, will make you do what you're supposed to.

You just have to find something you're enthusiastic about, and focus on it.

Maybe try look forward to your day at school or work.

At 113dB this clock would wake the gods:
    http://seniorshops.com/sonicbomb.html

    For reference:http://www.american-hearing.org/nihlcharts.html
    115 dB

sandblasting, loud rock concert, auto horn; 15 minutes per day is the maximum exposure without protection.

DISCLAIMER: I do not condone use of this clock as it will provably give you hearing problems if it's to close to your bed (ie. in the same room). Use at your own risk. (from the site above it says this thing is louder then a fucking chainsaw!)

    Multiple, annoying alarms helps me.

I've got a clock radio that goes off at 7:00, 7:07 and then 7:14 before my phone alarm on the other side of the room goes off at 7:15 to make sure I'm out of bed.

Not only can I turn an alarm off without even registering that I've woken up, I have had times where the only logical explanation is that I've gotten up (while still basically asleep) walked across the room, turned the alarm off and then deactivated future alarms

Oh man, I have the exact same thing sometimes. A couple of times this term when I've needed to get up at 8:30 for class, I've ended up waking up at 9:30 despite setting TWO alarm clocks, both of which never die unless hit in a tiny button that I can barely find while awake. And yet, if I check the alarms at 9:30, it appears that they never went off, but that they were set perfectly.

I have no clue how this happens, but I want to know. Lack of this kind of control while asleep freaks me out.

I'm with the apparently now branded WILLPOWER (TM). And the following advice.

Have a consistent bedtime and adequate amount of sleep.

Don't eat hard to process meals before bed (this will make your sleep shitty)

Stick the alarm on the other side of the room so you get up.

Once your up, make the bed. Doing something structured helps put your brain into do stuff mode.

    Jump into the shower.

Yeah, it's all about getting up and doing something. As soon as my alarm goes off, I am up and out of bed, and into the shower. You just train yourself to do it. Even when my girlfriend's alarm goes off on the weekends I pop up like "OH SHIT TIME TO GO TO WORK!!!!"

something that has always worked for me is actually getting up earlier. It sounds weird, but i have a horrible time getting up from 7:30 - 9:00 ish. Through an amazing series of shitty jobs over the years i have found that if i get up BEFORE those times (6:45, 7 am) I have suprisingly less trouble getting out of bed. It sucks horribly at first but once you give it a week, you would be surpised at the difference.

Drink 2-3 glasses of water before you sleep, you'll run to the bathroom as soon as your alarm rings in the morning, and then you're already up and it should be easy to not go back in to the bed, worked for me atleast.

Personally I'm fully aware it's my lack of willpower, my bed is just TOO damn comfy and that snooze button TOO tempting.

When I move house I'm going to try some of the suggestions. In fact my girlfriend has already said she's willing to buy me one of the above alarms. I'm torn between the helicopter and the one destined to damage my ears.

Don't get a loud one if you live in an apartment block, unless you want your neighbours slowly driven to a homicidal rage ;) even if they don't say anything or noise-complaint your ass, it remains a fairly inconsiderate act.

Moving to a detached house, so it wouldn't be too bad, but methinks if the gf did get me the loud one, I'd honestly only use the Bed Shaker part of it or I'd be deaf by the end of the month.

...although that'd mean I wouldn't be able to hear her complain...

Okay, so this morning I went for two things. First, the timer radio. It worked well, gave me something to focus on for twenty minutes so that by the time I had to get up I was less sluggish. Unfortunately I didn't like what was playing, and I don't like using CD's as you're waking up to the same track every morning. Second, the alarm across the room. It worked I guess, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. I don't want so much to drag myself out of bed, I'm more looking for motivation, if it's possible.

Tomorrow I think I will attack the shower. I am very, very much a man of routine. Up. Cereal. Toast. Shower. Brush teeth. Get dressed. Same thing every day. Perhaps if I move the shower to the front of the queue, that'll charge me up for the other tasks.

lol novel alarm clocks... they would probably just irritate me. I use my phone as my alarm because you can set the days it goes off, ie your sleep is protected on weekends. Any other alarm is just going to annoy me. Especially after a night's partying. "Stupid puzzle!" *hurls alarm out window*

Another thought: I think I will try to boil myself alive by turning on the electric blanket to the max when I wake up. That would hopefully eliminate the comfort factor.

As for this Willpower (TM): it's not particularly strong at the moment. I don't take it for walks often enough, and I don't spend a lot on it. My Apathy(TM) tends to just bark at it and it scurries off into some hidey hole.

Moving the shower up the queue should help. That's usually how I choose to start my early days.

I'll read the rest of the thead later, but when you want to get up, just count from one to ten, and on ten, get up. It's surprising how often this works.

I just reorient my bed during the summer so that the sun wakes me up. Even at 6:30 the sun's out already. I can't sleep when it's that bright.

Can't help you during the winter season though. :P

Mp3 playing alarm clock of some description. Eye Of The Tiger. Problem solved.

Whenever I really needed to make sure that I was up for a test or a final or an important class, or I didn't get into my room until 4AM for whatever reason(Tech week, celebration after Tech week, random parties, St. Patrick's Day, etc, etc, etc.) I would set my computer to wake me up with one of three songs:

    Colonial Anthem: BSG Season II
    or
    Serenity Main Theme: Serenity
    or
    Baba Yetu: Civilization IV

I was always ready to go when waking up to these songs.

It took me about a month before I played Civ IV when I got it, because I was spending pretty much all day at the opening menu screen listening to Baba Yetu over and over and over again.
