So the day has finally arrived, my DSL is getting installed. Hell I'm using it right now. But theres a problem, my Dads computer, which runs Windows 98, dosen't seem to want to take it. The modem can tell its hooked up, and the PC says it has a new device installed, but we get no internet. The DSL install guy whos here has no clue whats going on, I know we CAN, beacause we had it before, years ago. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    buy a new computer?

Windows 98 isn't even supported by Microsoft anymore so you're pretty much SoL. Really, wtf are you doing with windows 98. Windows XP is $99 on newegg and it will work perfectly with your DSL out of the box.

Are you just opening ie/firefox whatever, and pages don't load? Have you gone into the network settings and checked everything to make sure it's all set right?

Putting a naked win98 box on the internet is not smart. If XP is out of your price range, get a cheap broadband router.

If that's too much, install Linux on it. :)

Seriously, just buy a Linksys or D-Link Router and configure it to do your PPPoE (username/password) for DSL, then connect the other computers to the router. This will save you so much trouble in the long run.

For the record. I HAVE XP, my Dad however does not. He refuses to spend any money upgrading the PC we got back in like 99. But yeah I got my sister to bring back my old D-Link back from her house so I'll see if I can get that to work.

Is it 98 Second Edition? I thought you needed Second Edition for networking to work. Not positive though.

I think its second edition, but I'm not sure. I KNOW we had this working before, but it was via a router, which my sister still has yet to return.

You need SE for PPPoE DSL to work directly from the computer to the Modem. Any Win98 or 95 workstation supports standard TCP/IP networking to a router.
