Car Tag expiration

quick little question:

my brother just got stopped for apparently having an expired tag. We live in florida.

Okay here's the skinny: he's out driving her car, he's allowed to, she let him, that's all good. Now she recently got a new tag in the mail with the expiration date of 08/07/08

the old one on the car is 08/07/07. This is the expiration date, yes? This is when the tag is good until, yes?

she was planning to put the new one on the car at about the 6th or so, 2 days or so before the old one expires.

Why was my brother stopped? The cop calls her in the middle of the night to tell her that she "should have already put on the tag"

what? WHAT? It's not expired yet, what's the point?

Your brother looked young and they suspected him of breaking the law. They therefore pulled him over under any excuse they could think of in order to try and nab him for something. Unless he got a ticket don't worry about it.

I'm guessing it's not, but is the date in day / month / year format instead of the usual (for the US) month / day / year?

probably ran the plates at random, noticed a female-looking-name owner of said plates and a guy driving the car, made up excuse to pull him over hoping he'd give himself up or something.

you guys have a specific DAY? My tags just have month/ year, and are color coded.

so 08/07 would theoretically be valid until the date was past 08/07 ... (september and beyond)

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't worry about getting into trouble for having tags that aren't yet expired. You really don't need to wait, though, just put on the new ones as soon as you get them and you won't have to worry about it.

The cops are effing retarded about tags here, IIRC you live close to Hillsborough county?

Yeah, the system is terrible, almost beyond words.

Did you have to pay a fine? I had to pay a fine.

If it was a serious offense, your bro would've gotten a fine or would've gotten a note demanding he appear in court/wherever proving that they got new tags. Kind of like driving without a license -- they typically don't let you off the hook, and either make you prove that you do have a license or they fine you right there.

Just a cop checking out on something he thought was suspicious. Your bro may have been driving poorly/oddly and while not breaking a law, the cop figured "eh, tags are close, I'll get a closer look."
