Nintendo Hard: 6,349,778th Time's The Charm

I don't believe I should have to explain what 'Nintendo hard' is, but for the uninitiated, something that is 'Nintendo hard' is a gaming task that is so unbelievably difficult that gamers will spend, literally, years trying to complete. A task to which the completion is regarded by the community as almost as good, or even better than, beating the game itself. The quintessial example is Battletoads and Turbo Tunnel. The game does not neccesarily have to be on a Nintendo console, but the term comes from the fact that most early examples were NES games.
This thread is a commemoration of such. What's Nintendo hard? Have you beaten anything Nintendo hard? How long did it take you?
I'll kick things off by saying it took me 15 years before I managed to do this in Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular:
There's a trick to it that I will spoiler just in case you don't want to hear it:
Hold B to start the jump. Release B when you're at the peak of the jump. Tap B and you're going in the drink every time. Hold it too long and you're in the drink.
Your turn.
I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.
Obligatory, but still so true. I think I can count the number of times I ever made it past the second level of that fucking TMNT NES game on two hands.
There was a time when I used to start playing MegaMan II by first defeating Quick Man and then following up with Heat Man, using the stupid NES Max pad.
That skill died when MM3 introduced the slide and forever made me try to use that move in MM2.
Beating the last part of area 8-3 in Hudson's Adventure Island.
For anyone that has (or hasn't) played the game, it's the part where you jump from bouncey platform to bouncey platform, all the while avoiding the bats flying at your face, and then at the end (unless you know about it) you panic because of the fire and fall into the pit at least 100 times even AFTER you've mastered avoiding the bats. I nominate this as the hardest part of any game ever (excluded those obscure Japanese games that probably weren't meant to be beaten).
Also, beating Gunsmoke with my thumbs remaining intact.
I keep screwing up the timing on his spin punch attack. I think I would've given up on any other game by now, but this one is too damn rewarding when you actually win.
I remember my dad and I tried for over a week. When all of a sudden he wakes me up, in the middle of the night, and showed me he had landed.
Damn That Part!!!
Oh shit, I remember that! I rented that game, and never landed once.
I know I must have landed it once as a kid because I remember the second level where you had to re-fuel in midair (or was that still the first level?), and holy crap was that ever hard.
Daybreak on

I'm still massively proud of finally beating Punch Out!! on the VC. So many years of torment. It wasn't technically Mike Tyson that I finally beat, but same difference anyway.
Even thinking about it now is causing a huge grin to spread across my face.

YES. I was a very sad 8 year old playing this game, and loosing so many times on that one level.
Forget Super Macho Man...Nothing brings me fear like The Dreamland Express, courtesy of Mr. Sandman. Even Iron Mike's twinkling eyes cannot match the despair.
First off, I could NEVER get the hang of turtle tipping, and even when I've had someone do it for me, I still can't get past 8-4. I don't know what it is.
Oh, also, I'd like to point out that the Lost Levels that came with Super Marios All Stars are insanely hard.
That FUCKING flamethrower area in Mission: Impossible for the NES. It's on the last level... you get locked in a huge room with a bunch of flamethrower guys and have to make it to the end without dying. The flamethrowers kill you in two hits, and there's only one guy (Grant) who's fast enough to avoid the flames consistently AND attack quickly enough to take them down. And, of course, he's also the only guy that knows how to use the electronic lock mechanisms later on in the level so if he dies you're screwed. And oh... when you get to the end boss he opens up a pit underneath you and you have to do the whole fornicating flamethrower level over again RRRAAGH.

I actually completed The Lost Levels before I completed SMB. That may be because I spammed the one level where you can gain half a dozen 1ups for a few hours so I had plenty of lives to pass the last world.
The chocobo race in FFX to get the seal to upgrade Tidus' ultimate weapon is the one that immediately comes to mind for me.
I wasn't even trying when I finally did it.
I was all like "OK, one more time, screw it, then I'll stop."
And I did it.
Mine just seemed to be a luck out, the birds didnt seek me out as much as they had previously.

Beating Mike Tysons Punch out on the NES took me a looooong time. But oh so satisfying when I finally finished the game. I tried it on VC, and now I can barely beat the 3rd or 4th guy .
I actually had to get one of my siblings to get Tidus's ultimate weapon.
Super Mario RPG, I forget what you got for it, but there was some prize for getting some very large number of hits on Mario's super jump ability... that took maaaaaany many tries.
I seem to remember the Dreamcast version of MDK2 being stupidly hard. I can't remember why though
Doc - The bombs.
Kurt Hectic - Too many Biffs. (The big soldiers with a single eye located in their belt buckle.)
Max - The Atomic Jetpack sequences (the second had a really great chill song though. Is it true Amon Tobin did the music to this game?)
I was all like "OK, one more time, screw it, then I'll stop."
And I did it.
That kind of thing happens to me a lot, I find. From Chapter 7 in F-Zero GX (curse you Leon) to Battle of Olympus on the NES (curse you, pretty much every boss ever).
Probably because I'm more relaxed during the "one more time and then I'll quit" round.
Actually, I know it's been said but people aren't kidding about Devil May Cry 3.
I mean, just the fact that you can't rapid-fire yourself at the boss until you get it right. Every time I get there, I am substantially more badass on the way up, and then die horribly while hurting the boss 1/50th of a health bar more. It's just so hard to get used to the boss patterns when you keep getting kicked to the beginning.

MDK2 was insanely hard in certain parts.
That song becomes less chill when it's "Ode to the 50th Fucking Time, You Ass."
Oh, and I found it on Wikipedia just now. I thought it was Amon Tobin for some reason.
Unlike Tommy Tallarico's symphonic, movie-like soundtrack for the original MDK, the MDK 2 soundtrack is considerably more modern. It was composed by Jesper Kyd, Albert Olson, and Raymond Watts of the band Pig. Most of the music falls under the category of electronica, specifically bigbeat, breakbeat, and drum and bass.
Awesome. Does anyone know where those songs can be downloaded? A lot of them can be heard on Youtube.

I never had that much trouble with the Turbo Tunnel in Battletoads. Or the bombs in TMNT.
Also fuck that dungeon with Zelda 1 with all the Wizrobes.
I sat down and forced myself to play it for like 14 hours straight.
I still don't really believe it's possible.

It was the final screen of Metroid: Zero Mission when you beat it with 15% of items or less on Hard.

I got platinum.

Trying to land your F-14 for the first time.
I remember my dad and I tried for over a week. When all of a sudden he wakes me up, in the middle of the night, and showed me he had landed.
