I'm headed to college and the debate wrangles the mind. On average I'm gonna be carrying my MacBook, a couple of notebooks, textbook or two, phone, the usual. I don't want to be showing up with my 3 year old Jansport backpack and getting all made fun of for not growing out of highschool.
I have one of each. I used to just have the messenger bag, but my backpack was nicer for comic-con because it was on my back all day and distributed the weight across both shoulders instead of just one like the messenger bag did.
Though I still love my messenger bag.

i walk around high school with a large black dildo and some pants
I prefer a messenger bag (Timbuk2 ftw) for most of my daily needs but then I also have a Jansport daypack for when I need to carry more or am doing dayhikes or my Camelbak for dayhikes where I'm travelling pretty light and want easy hydration.
I've got a UPS Messenger bag as a gift when I worked there.
It holds all my various stuff, a couple books, spare cell phone charger, DS, PSP (when I need it), iPod, a small first aid kit, umbrella, and a few other various things.
Hasn't done me wrong yet, but if you're going to be walking around with more than a few pounds worth of gear for long periods, I'd go with a backpack or one of those fancy across the body deals.
I have a targus backpack, holds my macbook pro, ds, psp, phone, cables, power brick, media, hard drive, and whatever small child I have abducted that day.

My messenger bag is good for going to class and short trips, but if I'm going to be walking around all day with a lot of stuff I'd rather have a backpack to spare my shoulder.
It was so big that it made him look even frailer by comparison
Not possible.
I've got a nice messenger bag that was meant to hold one of those old, gigantic laptops. It balances the weight out when I am lugging my bowling ball down to the alley for classes.
It would be nice to get a rolling bag at some point. They make everything seem more professional.

I have a backpack that I use when I ride my bike
It held my shit from place to place, so I suppose is was a 10 bucks well spent.
Though I still love my messenger bag.

my usual day in college didn't have me back to my room but maybe once, so I had to carry a lot of shit around
p.s. Don't pick something because you are afraid of being made fun of. Pick something for comfort and convenience.
p.s.s. no one in college gives a crap about what some random guy uses to carry his shit around in.
