Not of the Pops: Videogame Music NSF56k

(Apologies in advance if this threads already happened, I couldn't find it anywhere.)

The music you listen to when you play video games can utterly affect your experience. Who can forget the long list of playlist suggestions to crank while fucking up zombies in Dead Rising?

But this is more about the composers whose work is appreciated but for the most part unknown; the work of the video game composer. When I loaded up Hexic on my 360 for the first time in a while just how fantastic the music is in this game. I don't even know what genre it would fit in to exactly, but the word 'ambient' certainly comes to mind. I stopped playing, turned the tv off, shut my eyes and just listened. These guys need more credit. Do they have a band? A CD?

I've noticed that with a lot of games, there is now a trend towards the realistic (no music at all) or the cinematic (climactic orchestral music at the right moments). I think it's unfortunate that we might be seeing the end of repetitive, hypnotic electronic blips. Is writing a catchy background tune becoming unstylish?

Other excellent background music tracks that I can think of:
(Warning: Most links go to YouTube and I make no guarantee that they are Spoiler Free.)

The ambient score from Rainbox Six Vegas. Tends toward the more 'cinematic' end of the background music spectrum, but the music in this game really successfully builds tension and it's a good example of dynamic scoring. This game would be less engaging without it.
rainbow-six-vegas-4.jpg
Hear some 24-style tension building background music here.

Shinin' from Lumines (obviously!)
a_med_lumines1.jpg
Hear it here.

The entire score from The Dig. I remember this as being the first video game whose music I wanted to buy on CD.
dig.jpg
Hear some here.

'Ice Cap' Zone of Sonic 3 and the First Boss music of Sonic 1.
180px-Sonic3_IceCap.png
sonic1boss1.jpg
Hear some amazing guy play Ice Cap Zone on Piano here. And the Sonic 1 boss music here. Dig that electro bass.

I also hear Michael Jackson might have had something to do with Sonic's music? Here's a Youtube "Documentary" about it.

'That god damn ditty' from Alex The Kidd on Master System. Not necessarily good music, but damn it if it's not catchy. I regularly quote this games first level music to annoy my work colleagues who inevitably get it stuck in their heads.
reviewalexkiddmiracleworldsms-2.jpg
Oh god it's infecting my ears with it's impossible melody!

If you need to click those links to hear the music, truly, I am shocked. What's your favourite game music and why does it work? Link us! Share the goodness.

for what it's worth, I've repeatedly said the "Sonic 3 stole MJ's music!" business is bullshit. You can hear anything if you want to bad enough.

GRAW has some awesome music that plays in multiplayer mode when you're about to get killed or kill someone.

I still love the music from Mega Man 2....

All those little beeps and boops strung together for joy and awesomeness.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

Guild Wars has the best music I've ever heard in a game.

WoW, Shogo Moblie Armor Division and Mafia are close behind.

SotC, has great music in it. It made the fights in the game even more epic. I was actually listening to it awhile ago.

I am constantly impressed by the music guys over at NAMCO. Ace Combat, Soul Calibur and Xenosaga all had great, epic, soundtracks.

If anybody remembers, the Betrayal at Krondor soundtrack was AWESOME.
It was really the first game I bothered to put into my cd player just for the music.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert (yes, Hell March, I'm looking at you)

    Hero's Quest 1 (Erana's Peace and such)

    Most anything by Jeremy Soule...

NOLF had better music than NOLF2. Really, it's toe-tapping fun.

This may sound like blasphemy, but the version of Demoltion on Frank Klepacki's website rocks just as hard as Hell March.

We do the great game music thread every once in awhile, and I always mention Interstate 76, but I want to see some custom soundtrack suggestions too. Some games and songs were just meant to be together.

Also, if someone can post the website with the I76 soundtrack on it I will be extremely grateful. Someone stole the CD out of my car.

The Pyro and Stratos Themes from sacrifice are pretty nice. Fits their respective gods perfectly.

Overall, Sacrifice had some amazing music. Not at all the hollywood-esque or classical themes you hear in other games.
Much more tribal, and much more colourful.

I think I agree. I still have the edition of NOLF that included the 10 extra "NOLF-inspired" tracks...good stuff.

Also, NOLF was a better game.

Might and Magic VII had a surprisingly pleasant ambient soundtrack, along with the dated engine.

I love the overworld/neutral zone music of almost every SMT game ever made. It's all beautiful chill music.

For DDS it's Muladhara, Nocturne's overworld, Persona 2's city music, P3's school music, I could keep any of the above on repeat for hours.

And I love Shinin' from Lumines. I wish I could find a single other song as good as that in the OST.
(Then again, I've only gotten about 12 songs in.)

Absolutely have to show love to the music games. No other genre around lives on the talents of a composer more than that. Space Channel 5 tops the list for me, but the Harmonix team(Freq/Amp-era), Andamiro, and Konami all lay down some great beats, too.

Also, Dragon Force. Mostly Junon, Reinhart, and Mikhal's overworld music, though all eight have their charms.
(Which reminds me of Albert Odyssey's. Epic OST.)
