Basically Dare to be Digital is a competition that originated as part of the University of Abertay Dundee in Scotland. This year it's spread its wings to England, Ireland, China and India with help from companies like EA, Rare, Real Time Worlds, Codemasters etc.
Hundreds of teams enter with a game concept, and 12 chosen get 10 weeks to develop a prototype to show to the public and industry judges, with the possiblity of winning cash prizes and a shot at a BAVGA (BAFTA for videogames) -

The ideas this year have been varied, from Physics-Based Coorperative Platform games to Rhythmic Action-Adventures. It's a real professional industry experience and it's great for any students on software engineering or art related courses that want to break into the games industry.
Here's some of the trailers for a few of the games showing this weekend in Edinburgh at Dare Protoplay.
Bear Go Home - A 2d-Side Scrolling Platform Game that uses only simple clicks with a mouse.
Heaven2Ocean - A 2d-Puzzle game where you must guide a blob of water through a level
ClimbActic - A 2-Player 3D Platform game with physics and cooperative (Or Uncooperative
) Gameplay.
Ragnarawk - A Rhythmic Action Adventure RPG using the Guitar Hero Controller. (Think Zelda meets GH)
Forgotten Souls - A First Person Survival Horror
There are other teams, for a look at their work (Wii-Mote Flight Sim with Customizable Planes, Japanese NInja-Stealth Game, MMO Tag and more) check our the main Dare site and also the video diaries -

I strongly reccommend anyone who wants to break into the games industry and attends Uni in the UK to take a look
It's a competition that encourages innovative ideas and generally gives people the chance to make their own game while simulataineously learning industry skills.

It reminds me more of "Gitaroo Man meets Bookworm Adventure," and it actually looks absurd enough for me to really want to play it.
