The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
There have been a few stories recently about Microsoft going back on their pledge that no games would require the Hard Drive, most of which redirect toward a site called "Xbox Family" which I've never heard of, but it sounds about right to me. As far as I'm concerned, this is only the necessary correction after two long years of caustic error. Of course, don't believe this is some bold inversion of prior policy. If you're dropping the strategically correct product, the rule never applied to you in the first place.
Since that previous linked site isn't exactly official, here's one that is.
The website for CoD4 has several versions of the boxart, all of them show a icon that says Storage required. Click a picture and look at the bottom of the image, here. The icon has a picture of the hard drive and the memory card, but it looks pretty similar to the previsouly posted Hard Drive Required pic. The difference though is that it say's "Storage Requied" and has a picture of both the HDD and Memory Card.
Looks like XboxFamily was right ... I just dont' know why MS doesn't just make the damn HDD standard. It's not like there is anyone out there that doesn't have one.

Hi. This was debunked by an Infinity Ward employee who said the HDD required logo at the bottom of the boxart screens was put there by an artist who used them as placeholder logos for other stuff which would go on the box, such as publisher and memory card information. Someone else dig up the post on GAF where it is said (it was a ward employee posting on GAF by the way)
Edit: Im not saying this isnt true. HDD required may almost certainly come at some point. But those boxart screens cant be used as evidence cause of this. Still, those who bought a core pack deserve to be punished more.
What a totally uninteresting bit of news to 99.44% of 360 owners.
And the rest can still go buy a HD.
If it were true, it would mean games wouldn't suffer for catering to the HDD-less lowest common denominator. Hence, that news would be interesting news for 99.44% of 360 owners. Sadly untrue

I never looked at it that way. I approve of your clever inversion, and am now also sad.

As much as we all own the premium, and think people who buy the core are stupid assholes or some such, there are people that the core is perfectly acceptable for. I had a few customers who had absolutely zero interest in the hard drive. They play sports games exclusively, and don't go online, so a memory card made more sense for them.
Seriously, just because you don't think something's worthwhile, doesn't mean it's not worthwhile.

Well in the case of the Core not having a hard-drive absolutely it's not worthwhile to anyone
I don't care though if all they play is sports games, It makes it worse for anyone that it doesn't have a hard because developers cannot take advantage of the hard drive and it's a big problem IMO and a huge mistake on microsofts part.
They should of never released the core and I really don't care who buys the core, it hurts anyone that bought a 360 that the core doesn't have the hard drive.

Well, it simply means that those games that will require a hard drive most likely will not be the ones that the sports nuts play, thereby making us happy without affecting them.

oh, you mean the non-gamers who are ruining the industry for the rest of us? ;-)
seriously though, the existence of core systems potentially gimps games and is a detriment
If any game can force Microsoft's hand over this, it's GTA4. By all accounts Rockstar are finding that game harder to develop than they thought - if they want the hard-drive there to make developing the game for the 360 and the PS3 simultaneously easier, then Microsoft will let them demand the hard-drive. Although, it was the PS3 version that caused the GTA4 delay.

I'm pretty sure nobody outside of 2K/Rockstar actually knows what caused the delay. To my knowledge they never publicly mentioned why.
