Sorry about the spoiler a page or so ago. I didn't think things in the manual would be considered spoilers. However, if you're trying to black out any potential spoilers, then, yes, I'll mark them from now on.
Hey are those element things certain enemies drop permanent? I just got a fire element from a fireball and after I ate it, my fire bar on the menu screen went from 0 to 1. If that's permanent, I'm going to farm those guys while I level up to a level where I can beat that cave. And if the fireball drops that, I assume the same enemy in the second cave drops ice?

So what were the spoilers? I've read most of the thread and don't recall seeing any.
I don't like major character spoilers either and was unhappy to see one about a certain maid. It's hard to discuss the game without discussing some items, monsters, and the like but I don't think it's too hard not to reveal too much about the characters.
By the way, anyone annoyed (not seriously annoyed, but amused-annoyed) and how your character can't seem to sit still? You fish and he's swaying back and forth like he just had half a dozen cups of coffee, a few pops, and a handful of caffeine pills.
Yeah, I agree that PikaPuff isn't asking for too much, here. Typing out the spoiler tag isn't a lot of work.
And no, that hasn't bothered me at all -- actually I didn't notice until you mentioned it. On the other hand, I'm a real-life fidgeter and never sit or stand still, either.
Quick poll: did you name the character Raguna, or whatever his default name is, or rename him? In some games where the character has an established identity (like Link) I keep the default, but I always choose my own in HM games.
Pants. My characters are always Pants in games where I can change the name.

"What you had there is what we refer to as a focused non-terminal repeating phantasm or a Class 5 full-roaming vapor."

If there's an apple under your life bar area then it's not permanent.
I know I got some Earth Element when I mined a rock, so I guess that's where you get those. I think they permanently change your stats, but I'm not sure. I'm saving mine for potential forging
Yeah the thing I found was a fire element. Flame in a bubble. Item drops from any enemies are somewhat rare though so if the effect isn't permanent, that's a complete rip-off and I will punch Marvelous in the face over the internet.

I haven't played again since I almost missed the holiday. I need to eat but when I get back and play a day or two I'll let you know if the boost I got disappears.

Nay, permenant. I got my two over a week ago and I've still got my 2 Wind resistance/strength/whatever.

Hear that? That's the sound of many PA readers binging on injecting elemental essences into their veins.

Yeah, I've found one of those elements for fire and one for water, and also a strength booster. I like permanent stat boosters, but the gain isn't overly significant and there are other uses for those items.
Is it me or are festival events not as fun as the ones from the original SNES Harvest Moon (the only other Harvest Moon I've played). Everybody in Rune Factory just stands around, I remember in the SNES Harvest Moon everyone gathered in the town square and it was actually festive, things were happening.

The SNES festivals were nothing compared to those from Harvest Moon 64 (most anything is nothing compared to 64, but that's another issue) but yes, this is one of the few gripes I've got with Rune Factory. Town's just so damn static; nobody really seems to go anywhere or do anything outside of their job and 1-2 other places they visit either either every day or once a week, and you can get everybody's schedule down after several hours of play. If there was a good deal more variety in what people decided to do, it'd be perfect.
Looks like it. I got around 1K in the first 15 days or so and only managed to get the house upgrade Summer 29th, and I'm not even touching most of the caves.
Has anybody seen a cooking recipe guide? Or is there some way to see the effects of the final dish before cooking something?

I miss some of the SNES festivals too. The dance one was amusing and realistic as a festival, though of course not the most fun. Something like that should be in every HM in my opinion. But what they all really lack is the egg hunt. Why has no other HM had an egg hunt?
House is finally upgraded. I love the crafting system, though I still have a lot of books that need purchasing. My first objective needs to be to raise my skill level at everything.

Smithing is easy. May I recommend also making yourself a Luck Blade as soon as possible? Also a silent ring. With those two the rest of the game is quite simple.
For upgrading smithing I really like making hammers. For decoration I did mainly rings and sleeping bags, and those things you can make with just wool. For medicine I go mainly for healing pots and then the various status cures. The really important things to make are the two better heal potions.
Cooking is by far the biggest pain in the ass to raise. It raises about as slowly as medicine and you can lose material by failing. As soon as I could make omlets regularly I was in the money.

I stumbled upon a trick for cooking...
Spoiler if you don't want to sort of cheat the system to raise your cooking for nigh unto free:
If your inventory is full, you can succeed or fail and skillup, without consuming any of the ingredients used. This obviously only works with foods that their ingredient(s) stack.

Wow that is pretty broken.
Do you at least use RP/HP per attempt?
Not sure myself, I only did it once while making bread, and skilled up from the attempt. That is the extent of my knowledge.
Oh, hell, Natsume finally released a fixed version of Harvest Moon DS. The serial numbers are ABCEN1J09 or ABCEN1J11.
It's gonna SUCK to track these down. And I just imported the PAL version.
Is there any way to tell if it's the fixed version just from looking at the outside packaging? I can get this for $5 at my local Best Buy, and it's awfully tempting. If not, will Natsume replace borked copies if I ask them nicely?

They might actually. It's probably worth the risk. Just do your research and tell them you got one of the many gamebreaking bugs.
I'd still like a link to where that announcement was first posted (before it was posted in this thread). I want to read it and see if anything else is mentioned there.
Picked this up last night, on Spring day 12 right now; just got an iron hammer and having an iron hoe made. So far my only complaint is that removal for non-Poison status effects is entirely too expensive.

There are herbs on the ground you can eat to get rid of poison. Also you get a spell that cures it as well.

I went back and spoilered that post, too.

Potential brides are being considered spoilers.
Apple?
I consider facts about potential brides to be spoilers, such as secrets about themselves that they reveal to you and dialog/scenes they have.
A little Apple shows up underneath the Rune Point bar if you're under the affect of food.
Under the effects of "food"? I didn't know this game had drugs. :P
Do you mean elements or crystals? Elements look like little bubbles with a element symbol on them.
About me being upset about the potential bride thing is me being unreasonable.
Oh. I was ok with either, actually.

Oh, and I the Fall music.
