Split-screen Co-op on 360?

I'm considering getting a 360 pretty soon. I've wanted Chromehounds since I first heard about it years ago, and with Mass Effect, MUO, Age of Conan, Army of Two, and Bioshock coming to the 360, plus the latest price drop, choosing between getting a 360 and upgrading my PC is kind of a no-brainer.

The thing is, I'd like to be able to play some split-screen co-op games with my girlfriend. The only ones I know of are The Outfit, Kameo (although supposedly, you have to unlock it, and it's only on a few missions), and Halo 3. I'm guessing that Army of Two will have it as well.

That's not a lot of selection. Any other games with good split-screen co-op? Ideally like a story mode sort of co-op, too, and not just a death match against the computer.

Both Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas both have great Co-op, although I will say that Rainbow's Co-op is much more fun online, and you can't take guests into online. For third I'd say GRAW 2, just because you can have 4 player splitscreen co-op and play the co-op online with your guests.

Perfect Dark Zero's co-op is pretty fun. Lego Star Wars is a great co-op game as well, although it's not split-screen.

If you have an interest in crazy, Earth Defense Force 2017 is the finest killing-gigantic-ants-invading-Tokyo-to-wreck-shit simulator of our time, which happens to have a splitscreen coop for double the ant genocide. Did I mention that every building is destructible. That's right. You can thank me later.

But if you're going to get Lego Star Wars, why not just wait for the all six movies version?

Right now, I'm leaning towards Perfect Dark Zero to start out with. I have about negative eleventy billion interest points in Gears of War and GRAW, but R6 might warrant a purchase, too.

How about the XBL Arcade games? My girlfriend loves Worms: Mayhem... I think there's a Worms game on XBLA, too. Is it co-op? Anything else?

(FWIW, I don't need split-screen, necessarily, I just want the two of us to be able to play on one console)

Why the negativity towards Gears of War? That's some of the best damn co-op I've ever played.

Not a whole lot of negativity, the game just seems like a whole lot of gore and brown, and nothing that particularly grabs my interest.

This is the correct answer right here. The scale of the whole thing is awesome, the bigness of the enemies is great. It feels epic and huge in a good way and due to the kind of weapons you get to use and the enemies you fight.

When I realized I loved this game was when I saw some giant ants crawling on top of a space needle and fired my rocket launcher towards it, bringing down both the giant building and the 2-3 ants crawling on top of it.

And yes, it has split-screen co-op. And yes, it's very good.

One more vote for EDF, it absolutely rocks. In fact, it rocks the most in Co-Op. In single player it gets a little tedious, but with Co-Op magic, it suddenly becomes one of the best games I've ever played with a friend, bar none.

Unless you don't like "accidentally" blowing up whole buildings, fighting giant robots and bugs, and using missile launchers that can fire faster than machine guns. In that case, this is not for you at all.

This is exactly the thread I was goign to make. I just got a new 360, now I have to justify a lack of Super Smash Bros to my roommates.

I was really dissapointed to find out Crackdown didn't have same-console co-op, because it's awesome.

My vote goes to Gears of War and EDF2017. I played Gears in co-op with 3 different friends and they all had a blast.
And EDF? I played through it on 3 difficulties with a friend,we were basically seeing giant ants EVERYWHERE.

    Get those two!

Another vote for this one. I've really enjoyed it playing by myself, but split screen co-op in it brings the fun. Nothing better than saving a city from an alien bug invasion and leveling the very city you are saving with your Goliath rocket launcher in the process . .

We have a page over at 360arcadians that has multiplayer game information on it, including co-op modes and if they are split screen, over Live, etc. It won't tell you if a game is good, but it can help give you an idea of what games have it . .

This is actually really useful. This plus some review sites and I might be able to make some more informed decisions. And I need to make these decisions, because my friends will murder me with knives if I don't give them some form of multiplayer.

Edit: God damn it, they list Crackdown as being split-screen co-op only it is not!

Or it is, and I'm an idiot for not figuring it out.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is an obvious co-op game, no split screen but you can still get four people on one box. Plus it is actually really good and much better than the X-Men Legends series (even though no Juggernaut).

R6s story coop sucks because, well...none of the damn story is there. Just running around shooting terrorists with friends is great times, though, and I love the game.

The Worms game on XBLA is great and has some free extra downloads you could check out. There are some other coop games on XBLA; TMNT Arcade, Aegis Wing (free), Doom, etc. Streets of Rage 2 is on the way as well.

Oh and at least rent Gears of War, short but great coop experience.

Anyone seen the EDF 2017 review on Gametrailers? I checked it out based on all the suggestions here, and it looked really tedious: shoot giant ant with bazooka, wish, rinse, repeat 10 million times.

How's The Outfit? I know its visuals are pretty bad, but Mercenaries was one of my favorite games ever, and co-op Mercenaries was something I always wanted...

The Outfit is almost nothing like Mercenaries. It takes place on individual levels with specific objectives, and although it has a similar "drop stuff out of the sky" mechanic, they play quite differently. The Outfit is much more about accomplishing your specific objectives and doing so in a somewhat strategic fashion. To me the controls felt a little loose also, but I had fun with it while I had it.

Mercenaries 2 has online co-op and will be out later this year.

EDF is a little tedious, but if you only see that, you're ignoring all the fun of blowing everything up. :)

EDF 2017 doesn't really try to be anything that it's not. You're shooting giant bugs and monsters and UFOs with crazy weapons.

It's a one trick pony but it's a fucking awesome trick.

I paid $40 and got a good solid 8 hours of co-op with my nephew. Was worth every penny.

The screenshots I saw for it all looked like ass.

That said, there's no plausible reason that you shouldn't at least rent this game.

Because the spiders are the most annoying enemy since Cliff Racers.

But yes, get EDF, it's amazing. I wish the US got its predecessor, which is supposed to be even better.

It just looks like something I'd enjoy for about 5 minutes, then never play again. The graphics suck. The weapons look really boring (again, this may be the review I saw; it was the same damned rocket launcher the whole time), and there just doesn't seem to be much to it other than shooting boring enemies with boring weapons. Yeah, you can blow up buildings. Whee.

So, moving on... any other suggestions?

But EDF is crazygood fun! There's over 200 weapons!
Sure, some of them are really just improved versions of weaker ones... But then there's ones like a shotgun that fires 15 rounds in 3 seconds or grenades where you throw not one grenade, but sixty grenades at once.

I don't think the graphics suck... When there's hundreds of gunships flying over your head, and a swarm of giant ants barreling down at you while you've got to take out the giant UFO, and you fire a missile launcher that shoots 20 seeker missiles at once, I can forgive the game not having the highest poly counts.

Um, aside from that, I don't really own any other splitscreen co-op games. I've played Gears of War and Rainbow Six, though, and those were pretty fun.

If you wanted online, I'd recommend Crackdown, but that doesn't have splitscreen.

Will Left 4 Dead have splitscreen, or is that online-only-coop? Anyone know?

It's sad you're dismissing Gears as "brown and gore." It is those two things, yes (especially gore). But it's just about perfect for what you're requesting. There isn't any better split-screen co-op game on the 360 than Gears. Sure it's a bit short and yeah (in my opinion) it sucks sharing a screen with someone else, but man. It's just so fun.

EDF isn't for everyone, just for awesome people.

In seriousness, if you aren't the type of person to look at EDF and immediately say "I must have this," you probably aren't going to enjoy the game. When I saw screens and read about the premise of EDF, I knew it was a game designed specifically for me, and I was not disappointed.

Perfect Dark Zero has fantastic co-op play. Much better than the single player, and so cheap now it is a crime not to buy it. The second half of the bridge ... still my favourite 360 moment. Shame the final level is truly awful, but the bridge ... two of the happiest hours of gaming in my life.

I'm going against everyone and saying EDF is boring. It's fun as a rental but it gets tedious really fast. There are a ton of weapons but most are pretty useless or boring, although it IS fun blowing up everything in sight. After a couple hours my friend and I got really sick of it. Single player feels like a chore after about level 15.
