I'm considering getting a 360 pretty soon. I've wanted Chromehounds since I first heard about it years ago, and with Mass Effect, MUO, Age of Conan, Army of Two, and Bioshock coming to the 360, plus the latest price drop, choosing between getting a 360 and upgrading my PC is kind of a no-brainer.
The thing is, I'd like to be able to play some split-screen co-op games with my girlfriend. The only ones I know of are The Outfit, Kameo (although supposedly, you have to unlock it, and it's only on a few missions), and Halo 3. I'm
guessing that Army of Two will have it as well.
That's not a lot of selection. Any other games with
good split-screen co-op? Ideally like a story mode sort of co-op, too, and not just a death match against the computer.

"They appear to be secreting some bodily fluid..."
But if you're going to get Lego Star Wars, why not just wait for the all six movies version?
How about the XBL Arcade games? My girlfriend loves Worms: Mayhem... I think there's a Worms game on XBLA, too. Is it co-op? Anything else?
(FWIW, I don't need split-screen, necessarily, I just want the two of us to be able to play on one console)
Why the negativity towards Gears of War? That's some of the best damn co-op I've ever played.
This is the correct answer right here. The scale of the whole thing is awesome, the bigness of the enemies is great. It feels epic and huge in a good way and due to the kind of weapons you get to use and the enemies you fight.
When I realized I loved this game was when I saw some giant ants crawling on top of a space needle and fired my rocket launcher towards it, bringing down both the giant building and the 2-3 ants crawling on top of it.
And yes, it has split-screen co-op. And yes, it's very good.
One more vote for EDF, it absolutely rocks. In fact, it rocks the most in Co-Op. In single player it gets a little tedious, but with Co-Op magic, it suddenly becomes one of the best games I've ever played with a friend, bar none.
Unless you don't like "accidentally" blowing up whole buildings, fighting giant robots and bugs, and using missile launchers that can fire faster than machine guns. In that case, this is not for you at all.

I was really dissapointed to find out Crackdown didn't have same-console co-op, because it's awesome.
And EDF? I played through it on 3 difficulties with a friend,we were basically seeing giant ants EVERYWHERE.
Get those two!
Another vote for this one. I've really enjoyed it playing by myself, but split screen co-op in it brings the fun. Nothing better than saving a city from an alien bug invasion and leveling the very city you are saving with your Goliath rocket launcher in the process . .
We have a page over at 360arcadians that has multiplayer game information on it, including co-op modes and if they are split screen, over Live, etc. It won't tell you if a game is good, but it can help give you an idea of what games have it . .
This is actually really useful. This plus some review sites and I might be able to make some more informed decisions. And I need to make these decisions, because my friends will murder me with knives if I don't give them some form of multiplayer.
Edit: God damn it, they list Crackdown as being split-screen co-op only it is not!
Or it is, and I'm an idiot for not figuring it out.
R6s story coop sucks because, well...none of the damn story is there. Just running around shooting terrorists with friends is great times, though, and I love the game.
The Worms game on XBLA is great and has some free extra downloads you could check out. There are some other coop games on XBLA; TMNT Arcade, Aegis Wing (free), Doom, etc. Streets of Rage 2 is on the way as well.
Oh and at least rent Gears of War, short but great coop experience.
How's The Outfit? I know its visuals are pretty bad, but Mercenaries was one of my favorite games ever, and co-op Mercenaries was something I always wanted...
The Outfit is almost nothing like Mercenaries. It takes place on individual levels with specific objectives, and although it has a similar "drop stuff out of the sky" mechanic, they play quite differently. The Outfit is much more about accomplishing your specific objectives and doing so in a somewhat strategic fashion. To me the controls felt a little loose also, but I had fun with it while I had it.
Mercenaries 2 has online co-op and will be out later this year.
EDF is a little tedious, but if you only see that, you're ignoring all the fun of blowing everything up.

How can you not love it?
It's a one trick pony but it's a fucking awesome trick.
I paid $40 and got a good solid 8 hours of co-op with my nephew. Was worth every penny.
The screenshots I saw for it all looked like ass.
That said, there's no plausible reason that you shouldn't at least rent this game.
Unless you hate fun or something.

But yes, get EDF, it's amazing. I wish the US got its predecessor, which is supposed to be even better.
It just looks like something I'd enjoy for about 5 minutes, then never play again. The graphics suck. The weapons look really boring (again, this may be the review I saw; it was the same damned rocket launcher the whole time), and there just doesn't seem to be much to it other than shooting boring enemies with boring weapons. Yeah, you can blow up buildings. Whee.
So, moving on... any other suggestions?
But EDF is crazygood fun! There's over 200 weapons!
Sure, some of them are really just improved versions of weaker ones... But then there's ones like a shotgun that fires 15 rounds in 3 seconds or grenades where you throw not one grenade, but sixty grenades at once.
I don't think the graphics suck... When there's hundreds of gunships flying over your head, and a swarm of giant ants barreling down at you while you've got to take out the giant UFO, and you fire a missile launcher that shoots 20 seeker missiles at once, I can forgive the game not having the highest poly counts.
Um, aside from that, I don't really own any other splitscreen co-op games. I've played Gears of War and Rainbow Six, though, and those were pretty fun.
If you wanted online, I'd recommend Crackdown, but that doesn't have splitscreen.
Will Left 4 Dead have splitscreen, or is that online-only-coop? Anyone know?
In seriousness, if you aren't the type of person to look at EDF and immediately say "I must have this," you probably aren't going to enjoy the game. When I saw screens and read about the premise of EDF, I knew it was a game designed specifically for me, and I was not disappointed.
