Today at Games Convention in Leipzig, Bohemia Interactive announced ArmA 2, its latest military simulation game for PC DVD-ROM and next generation consoles (originally known also as Game 2).
ArmA 2 is set in the near future, year 2009, in a fictional post soviet country called Chernarus. Players will be sent as members of a United States Marine Corps Force Recon squad to this country to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure ongoing stability there.
Arma 2 is based on the latest generation technology, offering large –scale game world, authentic and extremely detailed modern units, weapons, vehicles and enviroments, challenging single player and vast array of multiplayer options.
ArmA 2 is expected to be released in 2008. Full game website will be available soon at www.arma2.com.

Operation Flashpoint is one of my favoritist games ever. So I want to be excited about this. But ArmA has left somewhat of a bad taste in my mouth because of all the bugs. For example when the 1.08 patch (which was supposed to fix all of the worst bugs) the guy I played with the most would crash to desktop as soon as a mission loaded. Consequently we've moved on to other games.

so yeah, I played OFP off and on for 6 years but ArmA for like 2 months...

Codemasters has finnaly shown some details on OFP2

Full title revealed as first video trailer launches at Games Convention 2007. Operation Flashpoint™2: Dragon Rising was today announced as the full title for the return of the leading name in modern military simulation gaming.

Codemasters also revealed an explosive video trailer for the game on its booth (Hall 4, F01) at Games Convention 2007, Leipzig, Germany. The trailer is now available to view and download from www.codemasters.com/flashpoint2

Coming in 2008 for major console platforms and PC, Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising marks the long-awaited return of the total conflict simulator. It will challenge a new generation of players to survive the chaos and rapidly evolving situations of military combat in a new and contemporary theatre.

"Set on a vast oil-rich island, located off the eastern coast of Russia, north of Japan, Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising's fiction occurs during a time of tension between Russia and China over the island's disputed ownership," explains Andrew Wafer, Brand Manager for Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising, at Codemasters.

"The game will open as Chinese forces launch an offensive and, referencing the title, as the dragon rises over the island, players will find themselves in a situation that is set to flare up into a flashpoint like never before."
As depicted in the trailer, soldiers, weaponry and military transportation will be authentic and realistically detailed. The game environment will be a comprehensive simulation of a real world location, densely packed to create a rich and challenging tactical environment.

Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising is in development at Codemasters Studios utilising an evolved variant of Neon technology, the studio's proprietary middleware. For the trailer video and to sign up for future development briefings, please visit: www.codemasters.com/flashpoint2

Jesus Christ.. Arma 2 already? Good news for sim buffs like me. Op Flash 2 and Arma 2... geeze

Arma 1 was Awesomecakes, but I'm really hoping they fix the interface and streamline the command system, I hated that I had to push 5 buttons to get a guy into a vehicle and tell him to attack someone.

I liked ArmA and it seems to work fine for me, I haven't installed any of the patches though because I knew some people who had it crash a lot once the patches were installed. OFP was still better.

Never played ArmA, but I loved Flashpoint at the time. It was good seeing a game that was far more 'sim', and less pure action. Most of the time you were killed you didn't even know who did it, you just knew you were exposed enough for it to have happened.

I didn't really enjoy the tank sections as much. The special ops might-time missions were cool though.

ArmA sucked, in my opinion. The weapons were pretty unrealistic and not even balanced. Vehicles were hard to control, and the AI felt overpowered, from my experience.

    I enjoyed OFP however.

I've been playing on a co-op server with some guys and it's pretty fun, but you have to be prepared to spend a lot of time getting to the action due to the long distances.

Codemasters own the rights to the Operation Flashpoint name, Bohemia broke off from Codemasters and made their own game (ArmA) whilst Codemasters got an all new team to work on Operation Flashpoint 2

In-game Screenshots (IMO, dosn' t really look that much better if at all then ArmA1; but if it's smoother animations and other minor stuff, then great)

    http://www.arma2.com/news.html

6 of em at the website.

Oh ya btw, BI just released some modding tools for ArmA1 visitor 3 (island mapping) and oxygen 2 (modeling).

So it looks like the surge of mods from ArmA will "truly" start now.

I'm a little sad that they're releasing ArmA2 so soon, I mean the expansion pack (Queen's Gambit) hasn't even been release yet. I rather have ArmA atleast stewed in the glory of modding and optimized for atleast the next 4-5 years like ofp did before they come out with a new version. It's just too dang soon.

Got a non-registration required link? (non-download speed capped)

I'd just like to reiterate what others have said about ArmA, there's a good game under there... unfortunately it's buggered up by bugs, bugs and more bugs. (and performance issues)

I am curious how Codemasters are going to approach OFP2. They'll either Call of Duty it and essentially make it some first person shooter or (hopefully) keep the spiritual essence of the original and make it a good soldier sim.

I'm not really sure what they're trying to do here. its a new campaign, new islands, new everything but i dont get why they're making it a seperate game. if they're adding new features and/or graphics and stuff why not make it part of a patch for ArmA? I hope this is somehow compaitble with ArmA1, hundreds if not thousands of people still play OFP ffs, why furthur divide your player base?

if its any indication of the gameplay I hope they take the realism of OFP and mix it with the action of, say, Call of Duty..

well since not many people really care about them to begin with, it would have been silly to make two threads
