It shows firm support for MH on Wii; they're trying to establish/re-establish the user base for the upcoming tri. It would be interesting if either the online was be free, or current KDDI subscribers were able to use their existing accounts to play online.

With this, I'm fairly confident a port of Monster Hunter dos is in the cards as well. I'm really, really hoping for non-Japanese releases too, despite that it still feels like a long shot.

Well... as long as the price is reasonable... St. Nick brought the family a Wii for christmas (yay) so I may just pick this up... but I would need to pick up a classic controller as well... so the price would have to be -very- reasonable.

This game is like crack. You spend all your effort into acquiring a set of armor only to have the high wear off and you need a more powerful set!

I got DKB and full Los X armor gemmed with sharpness+1. But now I need Rajang X armor. Sharpness+1, Fast Charge, and I can gem in Unsheathe Crit? Hell yes. God damn, my save file is already at 130 hrs played.

Fixed for you. *grin* Talk to me when you reach 400-ish hours. Of course, you started over from Freedom 2 to P2ndG, so the actual playtime is probably higher.

Rajang armor is nice, especially for a Greatsword wielder. Honestly, my two main hunting sets (non-ranged) are Chameleos and Ucamulbas, both gemmed up with Observer. Chameleos has anti-Wind Press AND HGE, while Ucamulbas has Artisan, ESP and Quake Resistance.

Ya, I think it's about 200 hrs played with freedom 2 combined. It's insane how much I can play it since it's on psp. I finally finished Fallout 3 last night, which I bought shortly after release, and it was only like 20 something hrs? Yet it took me so many weeks because my wife gets bored when I'm using our only TV in the house for too long, plus she doesn't like how violent it is when our baby is in the same room. Playing on adhoc is a bit difficult tho, since I am then using the TV and the usb keyboard from our computer, so my wife is stuck without both to kill time with.

I've got almost 700 hours invested into Monster Hunter including MHF and MHF2... and 90% of it is solo play :(. As far as armor goes... use my Hornitaur U set for earplug and my Ceanataur SUUSS for everything else. Until I get a hunting partner or 3 anything else would be hell to farm.

I can't wait for any wii version... as long as it has online play. Mostly Tri... but really anything would help.

I don't blame you about farming for better gear solo. I owe my gear to playing in a group. I am not that great right now, as I have trouble soloing any of the g rank monsters higher than gyp. Gonna go back and solo the high rank monsters until I can do them without getting hit more than once or twice. G rank is pretty much the same thing, only you die if you get hit twice or more. Gotta work on my skills.

So... at the bottom of the Monster Hunter G page for the wii... it has a blurb with 2009 in it. Anyone who can read that wanna translate it a bit? Does this mean it's going to come out in 2009? Wasn't that when Tri was supposed to come out?

e: Well... 2009 has come and for some reason when I read that blurb my brain rewound the time and I thought it was about to be 2008... which is quite humorous I must say. (hur hur.) In any case... looking at the blurb again there appears to be a 4 and a 1 spaced in there... So maybe April 1st? Does Japan do April Fools?

If someone would mind translating that was be super. It's an image so I can't use a web service to translate it.

I finally managed to get it open by drilling out the stripped screws (all five of them D:). I cleaned off the analog stick as well as I could, but it seems to have only sort of fixed it. It still drifts occasionally, just not as badly as before. I'm just going to keep my eye out for a bricked/used phat PSP, since the condition of my current device is declining.
If you are using CFW, then there's a plug-in which modifies the analog stick inputs, decreasing the sensitivity of the analog so that errors like you mentioned earlier do not happened. My analog stick has started to crap out in a similar manner (I couldn't use bows because my aim would wildly shoot in a random direction), but the plug-in has fixed it for me. I can't sneak as well as I could before (crouch, then nudging the analog), but I rarely sneak anyway. It's fairly easy to find on a Google search, at least to my knowledge.

My japanese isn't great, but I can tell you that the 4 and 1 you are referring to have nothing to do with dates. It just says you can play 4 players (for sure) and you can only go online as 1 player, ie: no split screen 2 players online (I think).

You both used Sonic Bows against plessy? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't sonic only do rapid or scatter? For large critters like that, a good pierce-based bow seems to work wonders. It'll absoluetely wreck his shit if you hit him in the head/neck/body when he's facing you; the pierce will register multiple hits going through the length of his body, and he's got a pretty long body. If you're on Freedom 2, maybe check out Dragon Bow Halo (better yet would be the upgraded Dragon Bow Solar). If the Loading skill is a possibility to include in your armor set, that'd kick Dragon Bow up to Pierce Level 4, I believe. That and power coatings and buffs should do some pretty good damage.

That said, he is indeed a sonofabitch. I barely beat him as well, but considering I was only pumping out solo damage, it should certainly be doable for you guys. I've been fortunate that I got just enough parts from green plessy at the time, but now I think I'm going to have to start farming him again, ugh.
I was having trouble not timing out against high rank green plesioth too. I got dragon bow halo and upgraded it to dragon bow solar with armor that gave me loading and was able to easily beat plesi solo with almost 10 minutes to spare.
Thanks so much for the help.

So I got to G rank today and I'm discovering how lame it is. Xlink doesn't work with my psp for whatever reason and that never mattered until now. I'm wearing the best armor I can get (akantor), wielding the strongest hammer I can get (ceanatuar head axe) and I time out on purple hermitaur. Oh and to unlock G rank I finished dual hypnoc with barely 38 seconds to spare. I don't even want to think what plesioth and devil blos will be like....
Why oh why must you not support online play, capcom!

PS. That classic controller is indeed amazing. I wish I had a Wii just for Tri.

so which PSP version should I get? I'm gonna be trading in some games very soon and kinda wanted PSO on a handheld (which, I played 2 briefly and it seemed good). Are there alternatives than the PSP ones?

basically, of all Monster Hunter games that are available here in the US (which I've no idea how many and on what systems), which one should I get?

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is the latest and greatest. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite will be out in the states sometime in the future (it's anyones guess as to when it will be out). But you will be able to import your character from Freedom 2 to Unite, so that's not a big deal.

Japanese Monster Hunter G bundle includes special-edition blue Classic Controller, Monster Hunter 3 demo [update]

[Update: for those of you lusting after the game or (more likely) the controller, Capcom's Christian Svensson has announced that there will be no US release for either. "Sorry. :(" Thanks to Samfish for pointing this out!]

For such a lazily-developed game, Capcom is putting significant resources into the Wii port of Monster Hunter G. In order to get around the Classic Controller requirement (and promote sales, of course), they've announced a Monster Hunter G Starter Pack bundle featuring this awesome blue, dragon-adorned (but not Blue Dragon-adorned) Classic Controller. This is, as far as we know, just the second special-edition (Nintendo brand) Wii controller -- the first was also a Classic Controller, specifically the Club Nintendo Super Famicom Classic Controller. This is also the first official Wii controller to be released in a color other than white. In other words: a big deal. And it's so cool-looking!

The Starter Pack will retail for 5,240 yen ($59) when it is released in Japan on April 23. Both this release and the game-only release of Monster Hunter G (3,990 yen, or $45) will include a demo of Monster Hunter 3. And just like that, Monster Hunter G has become a guaranteed bestseller.

Oh well, no biggie. After playing MHF2 or MHP2G, who wants to go back to G? I know it's a good entering point for new people to the series, but there's no problem with them starting out with part 3. You start out the same in all Monster Hunter games. The only real difference is the late game.

Well, Phantasy Star Portable (PSP) is being released in the US (GameFAQs says 3/24/09). It's pretty much PSO on a handheld. But for your fix right now, you can get Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (PSP), or possibly import Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (MHF2 with moar stuffz).

The only similar game that I can think of for the DS is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, but it's a bit limited in scope compared to Monster Hunter.

For portable Monster Huntering, I'd suggest waiting for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. If you just can't wait, whichever version you can find will do -- MHF and MHF2 are both rather rare.

Phantasy Star Universe is not PSO. I consider it very unfortunate, some do not. My personal take is that it's a soulless pretender with an MMO-level of grinding and not nearly enough content to justify it. Also, the level designers should quite simply be shot.

For PSO on a handheld, get a DS and Phantasy Star Zero this October. I've been told a good deal about it from someone who has the Japanese version. It builds on PSO's good points while fixing up weak points such as: loot (everyone gets their own like in MH now), controls (hold the cast button to charge up higher level techs, no more tech juggling), usefulness of FO equip (all FO weapons now boost magic power), Photon Blasts (now all useful), fairness of buffs (now also boost magic attack and evade), etc. You get 3 character slots, and it's playable online via servers -- no friend code or ad-hoc BS :)

I think there's a used one at one of the 5 Gamestops in my area for like 20 or 25 bucks. I think it's freedom 2. I owned it very briefly until it was stolen, but I really enjoyed it. I found it a bit hard to get used to the camera, but aside from that I liked what I played.

Freedom Unite is the american port of Portable 2nd G. It's basically Freedom 2 expanded. Unfortunately, that still means that playing online is done through Xlink Kai or the ps3 adhoc party.

Well, after not playing MHF2 for a few months, I finally started up the ol' game again. Finally finished making Improved Power Saws, which was hilariously fun to test on elder Kut-Ku (I think it was done in under a minute once I got to him).

Now it's time to finish up my 8-star quests, and I'm gonna ask for a bit of advice. I've got 3 diablos quests (including 4 horns), and 2 gravios quests. In the non- G-ranked versions, I wouldn't have too much trouble, but since I'm a bit rusty and I know it's gonna be a tougher battle, anyone got good tactical advice for diablos and grav?

The ol' standby sonic bombs for diablos... but don't bother when he's raging (which black diablos is going to do a lot).

For Gravios take tons of bombs, a water bow with piercing 3 or 4, upgraded earplugs(sorry, it's been awhile since i've played, can't remember all the names for things... can't wait for the wii version woot woot) and if you can squeeze the bomber skill in there, or get the feline bombing skill, bonus. G-rank Gravios is a huge pain in the rear because he sweeps his fire beam from one side to the other, so you have to constantly be on the move and know where he is and where you need to get to.

In any case, all of these are going to be extremely long difficult fights!

Water bow, that's a good idea. I don't know why, but I never really thought about Bowing a diablos before. That'll make it a hell of a lot easier than rushing in on him.

And yeah, my concern is mainly doling out enough damage in these long fights. Staying alive isn't necessarily the issue (though I agree, that sweeping gravios beam is rather a pain), just not timing out.

I should also get off my lazy butt and finish the training levels to get my piercings. Ah, I guess it's nice to know that there's still plenty for me to do in this game.

I've never bombed Diablos. The key to the Diablos fight is determining range. You have to be just close enough to get good damage on him while while far enough away to avoid his tail. If you are too far away, he'll be able to use his charge like a guided missile. At close range (just out of tail sweep), you can easily roll out of the path before he can start his turning radius on the charge. With a Bow, aim for his TAIL, the ranged weakpoint (if you can't hit his tail, hit his neck). There are several terrain features that can help, too. If he hits a pillar or wall, his horn gets stuck, giving you free hits until he breaks off both horns. Sonic Bombs are nearly identical to hitting him with a Shock Trap, but you can bow him to death without using a single Sonic Bomb.

Gravios fights highly depend on what weapon you are using. Most attacks should hit the belly until it breaks open (which thereafter becomes a MASSIVE weakpoint, and he is totally cake). Hammers/Horns are better off superpounding a wing repeatedly, with belly triplepounds when you can. Bowing/Bowgunning a Gravios to death is tedious, but nearly foolproof (unless you are bowing against an Upper Guild Hall Gravios, who has a side to side beam, but that has short range).

Bombs help opening his weak point a great deal... my favorite tactic when fighting gravios and basarios is to put a large barrel bomb next to one of the exploding rocks and just letting them bomb themselves.

E: Yeah... I hosed the formatting on my post... it's fixed now, thanks hahnsoo for making me look dumb :P

e2: also... for the record... never bowed a diablos either. Always gone with lance or longsword. With a lance get the upgraded block (again with the lack of names) and just let him run over you, then turn around and charge through his rear while he turns around... rinse and repeat. Longsword is trickier, but you get to remove that infernal tail.

Huh. Y'know, I've never thought of lancing a diablos. I usually long sword it. But thinking about it, a blos attack pattern would work pretty well for lance charges.

And wouldn't you be able to lance its tail off? Unless he keeps it too high from it getting charged through. I know that you can mess up a tigrex fierce with lance charges, including removing the tail and breaking all his parts.....

You can lance a diablos' tail off if you're extremely lucky, the moons are aligned properly and venus is in the fifth quarter. I may have done it once. (I'm pretty sure that one time I had it charge into walls repeatedly and just poked up at the tail.)

Lancing Diablos was pretty normal in MH1, and is usually how it goes online in MH2. Weapon of choice is usually the upgraded Kusha lance, since Diablos is weak to ice. If you let him stick himself into a ledge, it's pretty self-explanatory.

If not, just stay near a wall and block his charges. They have a minimal impact rating, so you won't move, and his tail will be right there behind you afterward. Once you get a feel for how far Diablos will charge, you won't even need a wall to set that up.

Annoying Fact: Rathalos' attacks generally have nearly 4x the knockback power of Diablos', meaning you will slide back when blocking with even a lance or GS. This is despite that Diablos probably weighs enough to sit on Rathalos like a cushion. There's absolutely no reason for it other than to make Rathalos a cheap little bitch.

Also note: Any part of a monster's tail counts when trying to cut it off. Aiming in between 'blos' legs for the very base of it works pretty well if he's really tall.

Break everything on him that you can, and cut/carve his tail.

    Then you cross your fingers.

I believe rubies may be more common against a Silver Rath, but I haven't played in months so I'm not sure.

I agree about Silver Rath. I believe Rubies are slightly easier to get against silver than azure.

I think regular rath might be better as well, but silver rath is nice because the stage pretty much keeps him in 1 area. (if you're fighting him at the Tower, that is)

Azure Rathalos gives the worst chance of Ruby drops among all of the Rathalos variants. Silver Rathalos gives the best chance (with better chances when you fight it as a pair with Gold Rathian), but can be more difficult to kill. Make sure you get the Tail Carve on Ruby runs, as both Shiny drops (Flash Bomb Rathalos out of the sky) and Tail Carves can give Rubies.

You are a wealth of knowledge, thank you.
