Let's Play: Ocarina of Time(My Zelda Journal)

Hi Penny Arcade forums. I'm a new member to these forums, although I have been quietly browsing as a guest. I really don't know how the other Let's Play threads work but I had a swell(yes i still use swell it sets me apart from the pack stop making fun of me O_o)idea.

Lately I've been playing bioshock. After finishing the game and glancing over the forum I found a particular thread where they were talking about how games have devolved in order to better serve the masses. One of the comments was something like: If you go back and play Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time now you'll probably have a hard time compared to today's games. Something like that. So what else could I do but go back and play Zelda...for the first time. FOR THE FIRST TIME you're all probably thinking. Has this guy been under a rock. No I haven't. I just never liked nintendo very much. And, truthfully I have played Zelda: Ocarina before but I got stuck very early and quit(I was young and naive...and lazy :(...)

So after deciding to do this I went over to Gamespot and checked up on the reviews. Sure they were old reviews but I thought they would be an accurate description of the game. I'd never seen so many tens in one place before. And I remembered that my experience wasn't really a ten. It was more of a 7-8. And I thought maybe if I shared my experiences with the loving, kind, and sympathetic community at penny arcade they'd help me get the most fun outta my game. So here it is my zelda journal:

Every play session I have will result in a post where I describe where I am and what I've done(something along the lines of: I'm in the castle and I'm standing over Zelda's dead body with a bloody knife in my hand but I didn't do it...I promise.) If I ever get stuck I will promptly call upon my peeps at penny arcade and y'all can help me out. I probably won't call on you alot unless I get really really really stuck cuz I like to brag that I completed games all by myself :D.

So would you kindly join me in this flashback to zelda. For those with memories and the young folk(or those who've been under rocks like me on planet playstation chugging down final fantasy) who want to explore ocarina for the first time. It'd make the experience a whole lot better if you guys brought out your N64s and Zelda cartridges and played alongside me and posted your experiences here as well. :D

    Day 1:

Ok I just started the game. Niro is a valiant young kokiri who hasn't gotten a fairy yet...that is till today. So the silly fair comes and wakes me up. "LISTEN!"(is it just me or do fairies have the cutest little voices). I get up and the fairy tells me the great Deku Tree has summoned me. OOOOO A TREE HAS SUMMONED ME. Better be on my way. So i get up run to one side of the map. Oops theres a guy there telling me that I can't go out into the forest because if I do I'll die. Oh well. Go to the other side. Now theres another guy M--- something telling me he won't let me go through to see the Deku Tree before I get a shield and sword. Ok so I'm no dummy I know I gotta go to the shop for the shield...but I kinda thought I'd find the sword there. Oh how wrong I was. So I went around town breaking vases for cash, got up 40 whatchamacall its and bought myself a shield. Now how was I gonna get the sword?

Well I went and talked to Sira and she said it was hidden deep in the woods. Unfortunatley for me I thought she meant "The Lost Woods". So I run in there with my shield looking around hopelessly to no avail. A lot of time spent here :(. Then I go back to Kokiri Forest and go to that training place where I find a hole in the wall. Fairy tells me to crawl in. Ok fairy you're the boss. So I go in the hole appear on the other side navigate around the boulder and find a treasure chest. To my great pleasure it had the sword(which most of you already knew).

So I go to the Deku Tree and turns out...he's sick. So I gotta go inside him and clean him out. So I proceed into my first dungeon. I navigate around the dungeon(at this point I've already collected sticks practicing on those roses outside the Deku Tree) and get a slingshot, a map, and a compass. Now Im one floor up on that circular wooden thing where at each stop theres a strong spider that you have to kill. Three in total. Shoot them in the belly and they die. Ringing any bells? Well I cleared them out. Then I got bored. Well tommorows another day. :D

This isn't a good idea, mate. This thread will get locked.

If you want to talk about Zelda, go to the already existing thread.
    Just some friendly advice.

Yeah, Dublo7 is right. While "Let's Play" threads are allowed and encouraged (we seem to be going through a Let's Play fad at the moment), those are typically written in a different style. They include numerous screenshots, so that people who have never played the game can follow along, and are generally humorous in nature.

I'm not sure that many folks will want to read the wall of text you put up there. This isn't so much a "Let's Play" thread as it is a blog about Zelda.

    Welcome to the forums, though.

Hmm, why? This seems a decent thread, to me. I'm curious about his impressions, playing OoT for the first time. It's not a general discussion thread like the other, it's a gaming log. It's not Thread of the Year, but don't assassinate it.

For some reason, I got to give this the XoB seal of approval. I love walls o' text. 5/7 flyers for four! What a great deal!

I think this is a pretty cool idea. It'd be a shitty idea if it wasn't this guy's first time with OOT, but I think it could be a real eye opener for those of us (most of us) whose opinions might be marred by nostalgia or selective memory in either direction.

If ya'll want to let this die, let it die. There is no reason to poop in this thread.

First time playing Ocarina of Time and Zelda in general I take it?

This was actually my first Zelda game played in full and it did not disappoint.

Heh, I did mean to mention that.

Also, the spiders are called Skulltullas and if you are playing the collectors edition with the GameCube pad you should know that using the ocarina for certain parts might be kind of a pain. Other than that its pretty much the same as the original for the N64. The frame rate is slightly better for the other versions though.

Ok. I guess I was just testing my limits and yes this is more of a blog than a post. I guess I should place this on a blog :P. Well I guess I'll just play the game and post a general review on the old Ocarina thread. I wouldnt want to upset the moderators :P.

One quick question. Is there any way to see how long I've been playing a certain save?

I say, wait until you have finished the journal, then post. I'll read it.

I think it's interesting reading someone's experience as he goes through. Bit different from normal opinion pieces.
