Buying a New DVD Player

So it looks like I'm in the market for a new DVD player. The last one I had was a Samsung HD-DVD 870 upconverting player that I got a deal on. Too bad, because it seems I got what I paid for, and after a few months it crapped itself, and now just gives me an error message when I put a disk in that it doesn't recognize the format.

It does this with everything I've tried; new DVD's, old DVD's that it's played before, burned disks friends have loaned me, CD's, everything. I've scoured the net for help, but the few reviews of the player that I found with this problem seemed to indicate it was terminal.

Now, the thing is that I'd had it for I guess about 2-3 months, enjoyed it and believe I've thrown out the receipt and the box, so I suspect that bothering to return it would be difficult if not impossible, and given that it's only a $100 piece of hardware, I'm looking into pricing out what it might cost to get it repaired (Read: I'm spending a lot of time on hold), but I've all but resigned myself to likely just needing to get a new one.

So, any suggestions? I had another Samsung player that lasted me over 4 years before I got this one, so the brand itself holds sway with me, aside from this one issue.

First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

Stick with Samsung, I'm not good with DVD players, but I know Samsung makes pretty awesome ones.

Spend LESS than 50 dollars, Ive got 2 DVD players that work great that cost me 40 bucks each (one is a Samsung and the other is an Emerson) and they both are going on 3 years old. I just consider them disposable, if they die I buy a new one, but Im not buying any fancy DVD player or BlueRay player or HDDVD player until the damn format war is over.

Check out Oppo's players. I have two of their models and I LOVE them. HDMI, upconverting, Divx, multi-region, great quality PAL/NTSC conversion, they're fantastic.

Are there many players that play DivX and Xvid? So far the only ones I've seen play one of the two, but not both.

    OXbox + XBMC?

I am struggling to set it up as my default dashboard, but I have had it up and running and it was awesome. Streaming movies from my PC over wireless was sweet, plus it'll play pretty much any disc you throw at it.
