As luck would have it, I had a file saved at the beginning of SQ. It is in fact the same game with all the goombas replaced by Buzzy Beatles, with worlds labeled *1-(presumably)*8, instead of LL's worlds A-D.

Alright thanks. I won't be doing that, that's just boring. LL is going to be evil enough with worlds A-D as well as World 9 which I'm pretty sure I get by not taking any warps.

Yup, that's how you get it. Also once you reach LL, I'm gonna start up a new game and play along side you.

Be ye warned, in case you didn't already know- some of the warp zones are accessed by jumping over end-of-level flagpoles, so don't try to to that if you want to reach World 9.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to never jump over the flags. And I'm sure you're going to be much better at playing alongside me. I'm really not that great at Mario 1 and LL just gets sadistic from what I remember. I'm very scared.

    It gets very sadistic.

Like, say goodbye to ever being big for more than 3 consecutive seconds. You'll be lucky to become Fire Mario once, and I'm not convinced that there are even any power stars in the game.

The game's sadism is why I love it. There are plenty of times where what's expected of you is so ridiculous you have to laugh while you're burning through game overs trying to accomplish it.

At least Super Mushrooms and Poison Mushrooms aren't almost identical in the All-Stars version.

And for the record, none of the above is hyperbole.

I pretty much crack up every time something bad happens and you make Mario just stare off to the left, start to turn around and keep going, then stop and turn back to stare again, while you're babbling incoherently.

I honestly could not believe it when I knocked that 1-up away, and I think it showed. If I had been trying to do it I don't think it would've been possible. It was total luck in the most horrible way possible. And these things only happen when you start recording for the whole world to see.

I don't know how to get a death counter in the corner (hell I can't even get game audio) but if it helps, I'll try to keep track and add it in the OP. Every video I'll increase it. Watch it be "Super Mario Lost Levels Done! Death Count: 241!" or something.

You guys are making him be luigi, by far the hardest character in the game? That's cruel.

    How about a rotation?

    World 1 - Mario

    World 2 - Luigi

    World 3 - Peach

    World 4 - Toad

    World 5 - Mario

    World 6 - Luigi

    World 7 - Choice

By the way, I approve of this thread.

Also of note, there is a difference between the green and red koopas in SMB. Red ones don't fall off platforms, green ones do.

I also demand a shout out in your next video.

Also, if possible, turn up the audio on the game a little.

Some sort of rotational/random system for character selection sounds like the most ideal.

I probably am going to do a rotation of characters. They let me choose after every level or something right? I haven't played Mario 2 since it came out on GBA so I've forgotten almost everything. Except the masks. Those terrifying masks. If I can choose after each level though, I'll probably go from left to right and then loop back around.

And you're right about the koopas XoB, I can't believe I forgot that. I am ashamed at myself.

    It's fine.

I usually beat the entire game with Peach (floaty jump FTW) but there are many, many situations where Mario or, I hate to say it, Toad are better. Luigi is good for a couple of "I'm going to skip this whole fucking level tricks" almost as many as Peach in fact, but I'll take float over flutter any day of the week.

The reason Yoshi doesn't come with you into ghost houses/castles was so they could use the extra RAM space from his sprites for other graphics. Also, you can't have a baby Yoshi and an adult Yoshi in the same level, or else the Adult Yoshi's head will be the baby yoshi sprite.

Wow, ok so it was technical restraints on the engine moreso. I remember Yoshi's Island had more sprites and effects going on at one time than Mario World did. Ah well, I guess they got more out of the SNES later on.

Yoshi's Island had a SuperFX2 chip in the cartridge. The chip was a processor that itself was roughly as fast as the SNES's main CPU.

As I understand it, All Stars + World was shipped as a pack-in bonus to SNES consoles a bit later in the console's lifetime (around 1994-1995, I think... Wikipedia says December 1994). I don't think it's really fair to say that Nintendo did a poor job with the amount of content in World, as it is quite possible that when World was initially issued in 1990, they didn't have as large cartridge sizes. I know I can recall quite a few late-era SNES games being ogled over for cart sizes that were unheard of before them.
