LucasArts have just announced plans to bring Star Wars: Force Unleashed to the Wii. The game has already been announced for the 360 and PS3 and features some incredible new technology so it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out on the Wii.
"Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life,†said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. “We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.â€
The Wii version is in development by Krome Studios and is going to feature an exclusive Duel mode in which players can compete head-to-head against friends. Controls would have you use the Wii-mote as the lightsaber and the nunchuck controller to deliver Force powers to your targets. Now excuse my while I go make some whooshing sounds with my broom.
I am forever skeptical of every non-1st party game that comes to the Wii.
Whether or not they made the waggle right really seems to make or break the game, for me at least. But I still will hold hope for every one that comes out. Here's to this game hopefully not sucking! *clink*
Dude. It's Lucasarts, they haven't screwed anything up... Since ever!
You're joking, right?

Lightsaber game.
Lightsaber game.
This is pretty much what I was thinking of when I heard about the wii.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I never really thought this game looked good, but this is the one chance I'll give it. Because my Wiimote just fucking needs to be a lightsaber.
Also the 360 and PS3 version of the game are being developed in-house at LucasArts, but the PS2, PSP, and now Wii versions are being done by Krome Studios, who made the following games - http://www.kromestudios.com/games/results_ViewAll.php
The sheer force of my will will keep it from sucking.
And if that fails, I go to Plan B.
booze n' pills.
Well someone did make a mod for Jedi Outcast that allowed you to use the Wiimote for the sabre. IIRC it looked OK, not brilliant since of course the moves can't map on 1-to-1, they can only map on to specific animations. I suppose you could call that Plan C.
God I hope this is good since a lot of people (like myself) had the idea of a lightsaber game pop into our heads about 20 seconds after the premise of the Wii was announced.
I doubt "Krome Studios" realise that the game they are making is the Holy Grail of Wii games. I suspect they're probably just half-assing it, not really caring that what they could be making is one of the greatest games of all time, a game which no-one will be able to resist.
I'd have much rather them build a lightsaber game ground-up for the Wii rather then porting a PS2 one. I'm hopeful that it'll turn out well, though the fancy new physics system and what not seem to be a pretty big focus of the 360/PS3 versions, and I don't know how well they'd stay intact.
nb: there wont be true 1:1 wiimote controls for the lightsaber. it cant be done with the wiimote. an imitation of 1:1 is possible but it has been scrapped in several games for poor implementation, and only half works in wii sports baseball.
not to rain on the parade, but im still super excited for it. but i dont think this is the fabled lightsaber game that is coming. force unleashed like the name suggests focusses more on force powers, which makes me curious how they will pull it off on the wii as the main draw in all the trailers has been the physics and destruction which will not be done on wii.

edit: and there was an interview with someone from LucasArts a few months back, where they said they had an early test version of some lightsaber game working well on the Wii, so, don't give up.

Memo to Lucas Arts: because you took the Holy Grail of Wii games and told a B list dev to make it based off of a game designed for the fucking Playstation 2, I will hold you responsible for its failure. If it doesn't kick at LEAST as much ass as the phrase 'Wiimote lightsabre game' inherently implies, I will eat your children and stomp on your nuts.
Man, this game could get shitty reviews and only sell one copy(which would be mine), and I would still sit in a corner yelling "IT'S A FUCKING STAR WARS GAME FOR THE WII".
It's a fucking Star Wars game for the Wii.
Even with the devs, my hopes are so high that they cannot even be brought down by a sucky game.
Why can't they just make a game exclusively for the Wii? This sucks. This game will probably suck. The Wii is the number 1 selling next gen console and it still gets the B string from publishers. What a load of shit.
I will stab myself in the foot if this game does not suck and does not reek of a shitty PS2 port.
I've got an idea on how to do 1:1 sword controls on the wii. The problem is that the wii-mote camera has nothing to align with, right?
Well... why not use the wii-mote like this:
The wii-mote snaps onto the sword attachment horizontally at the top of the hilt. Grooves in the hilt force you to hold the sword with the wii-mote facing the screen. Viola! 1:1 movement is now more possible.

What? So you want it to just use the pointer with the remote held sideways?

no, the problem is that the controller has nothing to triangulate with when it's pointing upwards. it's blind. Meaning all motion must be handled via pitch, roll, and yaw accelerometers.
If you can have the pointer facing the screen, suddenly the remote can find itself in 3D space, meaning it can match 1:1 movement.
I've pretty much decided to boycott any PS2-to-Wii ports. Fucking lazy-ass developers don't deserve my money if they're not going to put a little fucking effort into their Wii games.
I will stab myself in the foot if this game does not suck and does not reek of a shitty PS2 port.
This made me laugh my ass off.
Because I agree.
It's just ridiculous. The first thing everyone thought of when they saw the Wii was how they could make a great light saber game out of it.
But the way this game is being treated almost guarantees that it will .. well, as you put it.
Normally it would annoy me, but right now all I can have myself do is laugh. Laugh at the ridiculousness of a company treating the ideal game for a system with the most market share in this manner.

I just hope that when it comes out and sucks shit-balls, Lucasarts doesn't use it as a precedence to say that Lightsaber games can't be done and can the idea entirely.

It would still be quite finicky. The Wii 2 needs moderately high-quality gyros in the controllers. It would need the controller laid flat on startup to calibrate but afterwards, the controller would be able to find its true rotation on all three axes at once.
Talking about sword games and 1:1 is sooo 2006. Get with the times. The next game should go with the future and be something like Jedi Power Cardio.
I remember a few years back someone talking about some hippy-new-age meditation game that measured your stress/anger/calmness levels via usb bio-sensors. The kid wanted to some how tap that to use force powers, ie if you're angry you can use darkside powers (lightening) if you are calm you can use light side powers (healing).
Back to the topic at hand: If I want a star wars game with tacked on wii-saber controls, I'lll buy Lego Star Wars. For Force Unleashed I'll pick up a 360.
This game is going to be shit, and so will any light sabre game for the Wii... I hate to say it, but it's true. If you are getting your hopes up, please save yourself the pain.
The Wii remote can't find itself in 3d space, it also doesn't have the power to render real time sabre movment physics... just hope that Sony or MS comes up with a sword device some day, because I guarantee you that the Wii will never have it.
First of all the Force Unleashed seems already like a shitty game. It's also a game thats coming out for everything. Usally means mediocre at best on at least one system. This wii version seems like a afterthought game with like a waggle left right to activate choke everyone. If anything it will probably play like Zelda TP I would think.
It just doesn't seem dedicated for what people want.

I don't know! You tell me!
But we must remain hopeful of a lightsaber game.
I have faith that this will not suck.

This could be an excellent thing, with any luck.
Pity it's the PS2 version being done.

Why must you taunt me, George?!
Then we'll all continue to clamor for the day they release a lightsaber game for the Wii.
Everytime an unclean internet heathen goes "lol wut aboot SW:FU?", he'll be dragged out back, thrown against the wall, and shot.
Memory of this game will be scoured from the masses, Josef Stalin style.
hey now, i'm sure Neversoft are very jealous http://www.kromestudios.com/games/overview.php?id=00008

this is their chance to catapault themselves as a known major developer if they dont fuck this up.
It's a fucking Star Wars game for the Wii.

Oh NOOOO I get to use my WII AS A LIGHTSABER instead of a MOUSE CLICK. Oh that's SOOOOO terrible.
