I would obviously like to make videos for my iPod for my plane trip later this week.

I have some standard DVD's and some avi files encoded with xvid. Is there a single program that is free that I can use? Or hell what can I use full stop?

If you're using a Mac you can use iSquint or VisualHub. If you're using PC well you can probably try Videora iPod Convertor. I haven't tried it myself but it's free so why not give it a shot? It's available here:

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html ; A free program I've used to get videos onto my iPod, has a great range of conversion options.

Videora has worked wonders for me. It's converted and automatically added everything I've thrown at it. As a small bonus (or large depending on your Youtube usage) you can browse Youtube for videos and tell it to convert any video on the site and add it to your Itunes library automatically. Yes, that does in fact mean "Chocolate Rain" is only a single click away from being on your Ipod.
