So I haven't seen a Gears thread in a while, and I definitely haven't seen one talking about the PC port. I honestly don't know a hell of a lot about Gears, except that it's a tactical shooter/horror game with awesome co-op and a good multiplayer mode. Also that every reviewer on the planet was sucking CliffyB's dick this time last year.
Now, we all know that console to PC ports are traditionally absolute shit, but I have cautious optimism for this one. First off it's being made by Epic, and they have tons of experience with PC games, so hopefully they do a quality port and get the controls and everything done right. They've also added a few levels so the single player should be a more complete experience.
Here is an interview with Mr. B about the new version of the game and all the new stuff.
Personally I'm most excited about the co-op. We haven't had a good co-op campaign experience on the PC in a very long time, and I hear Gears co-op is tops. The game will also ship with the UE3 editor for those of you with no interest in the awesome that is
UT3, or can't wait until 11/19 to get your hands on it. This is one of the coolest things about Epic, and one of the reasons I've always been a fan of what they do.
I guess those that have played Gears can tell us how great it is (or isn't), and the five of us without a 360 can swell with anticipation.
Apparently you get to fight this guy:

Score.
I must be spoiled by Halo (2+3) because they make it so damn easy to just get in to a game with people you know and have a damn good time doing it. I really wish, that if your going to make a game that is going to be presented as a competitive online game, that you would just straight up copy what Bungie did for there online system.

They redid all the textures to play at higher resolution. So yeah, according to what I've read the visuals are significantly improved over the 360 version. You'll need a pretty decent machine to get those visuals, but apparently it's also quite scaleable, and from what we've seen of the UE3 engine so far older rigs should be able to run it.
I'd much rather do that than pay $50 for a copy of a game that probably won't run on my PC.
But this thread bringing up GoW is just one more poke to make me want a 360.
Epic tests all there UE3 games on 2.5 year old systems with 1 gig of ram. You can run this game just fine, it wont look as good, but you can run it none the less. Its an extremely scalable engine.
Or TPS, whichever.
I came late to the 360 / Gears party but I played through the entire campaign co-op with a buddy over two or three sessions in one weekend, and it was glorious. I actually find the game not nearly as enjoyable while playing single-player, and I don't play random match-ups much, but as a co-op experience or playing with friends it's sheer gold.
I'd be interested to see who's left in the Live community now that most of the smacktards will have (hopefully) moved to the Haloez.
Because Epic has no plans to turn it into DLC, and they've stated as such.

The reason they aren't porting the new content over is becuase of all the work they have done on the engine and the new textures for the PC version. They would have to "de-engineer" the new levels by putting in old textures and making them work with the older Unreal 3 Engine used in the orginal 360 version. I don't think that will ever be worth the time/money for them to do it. Especially in a post Halo 3 landscape.
EDIT: Nevermind, the above post answered my question. Still kind of lame though, knowing that a texture pack is the screen door on my submarine.
I actually think it has more to do with the engine upgrades. They did a ton of work on it for UT3, and lucky for PC users they put that engine to work on Gears.
Engine changes are one of the underlying reasons (the new content would have to be redone to be usable on the 360 due to different engine builds) the other is that they want the PC version to actually have some unique features and content, in other words, a reason to buy it.

Even better, SPLIT SCREEN coop where one player uses the controller and the other KBAM or even another controller.
Who's with me?

I think there would have been plenty of reasons to buy it if it was a straight port, but then again I don't have a 360. Epic is one of the few developers with deep PC gaming roots though, and I'm glad that they continually try to keep their PC audience. This will be the first game I'll own that uses Windows Live, and I hope it doesn't suck. I am glad they didn't go the way of Shadowrun and require Vista or attempt cross platform play.
It just sucks that there won't be a Linux port becuase my brother won't play anything on Windows. I hope someone around here wants to go through the campaign co-op.
edit: There is online co-op, but no split screen. That would be cool though. :P
Will Gears 2 have similar technical issues? I'd love to see (and since this is Epic, I wouldn't be surprised if they elaborated at some point down the road) the technical problems associated with developing content between the 360 and the PC on UE3. There must be more to it than the usual poly-count and texture size issues. Maybe changes to their UnrealScript language or something.
So when they make Gears 2 with the new engine it should work just fine, but scaled back. Then a year later they can do the Gears 2 PC port and add stuff they had to leave out because of MS pressure and we can go through this mess again. Or they could do a simultaneous release, which would be awesome, but I doubt it will happen.
Epic, though, is the master at optimization. I have no doubt that this port will be very well-done, and will run well on a wide array of machines (granted they have SM 3.0, most likely). Other games, like Rainbow Six: Vegas are perfect examples of shitty, shitty ports.
Epic is awesome.
That would be "your". "You're" is short for "you are" so it makes no sense.
Anyway, I am looking forward to this game. I played the PC version of Gears at PAX and it looked nice, ran smooth and controlled acceptably. Co-op is an added delicious bonus.
Dick.
This weekend it shall be coop'd to death

Windows Live is free unless you want to play crossplatform or get multiplayer achievements or use TRUESKILL®™ LIVE! MATCHMAKING!
And since they were smart enough not to try to do crossplatform you don't have to worry about it. I'm guessing you can join servers and stuff with a free account. Does Windows Live allow dedicated servers like every other game network on the internet? Also wtf is "TRUESKILL®™ LIVE! MATCHMAKING!"?
Is there a demo out there of any game that uses UE3? If I could see how a demo using the engine runs I would probably feel a lot better (assuming it works).
UT3, it's also crazy exploding fast paced old school fun.
Unreal Tournament 3
Ohh, say like Unreal Tournament 3?
It's their bullshit rank matching system, specifically designed so you can't play with friends (as that might be cheating). Halo 2 allows dedicated servers so I assume most games will be ok on that front.
edit: oh man, I spent wayyy to long looking at the glorious shitfest that is www.gamesforwindows.com before posting this. It's really pathetic how little effort microsoft has put into the whole GfW and Live considering what they said they'd do.
Yeah and considering what Steam does now they have some serious catching up to do if they ever want PC gamers to take Live seriously. I just hope it has a decent server browsing system and an easy way to set up an online co-op game.
I gave up on reviewing the MP portion of Halo 2 for Vista because, quite simply, Games for Windows Live! did not work *at all* and returned an error message that wasn't even listed on any support page. Nevermind the awful (ingame only) interface that was poorly laid out and had the xbox button icons everywhere.
