In the sense of "LOL", "J/K", etc.

I think it means "I don't know, okay?"

Huh. I got friended on Facebook by somebody in Indianapolis (I'm in Oregon) and that's what they responded with when I asked if we knew each other. Go figure.

He probably typed "IDK" (I Don't Know) with an extra K by accident.

While we're on the subject, what does "kk" mean? Is it just "ok"?

    Why two K's?

I'm getting too old for this.

Easier to hit kk, rather than ok... Though I jujst now realized how close it is on the keyboard... Though on a cell phone, kk would be easier...

to show the other person you get it, and to move forward with teh conversation. like someone would say IRL "ok ok" , but now shorthanded

Not really when you think about it. It's easier to type a letter from one button followed by a letter on another button than to type two letters on the same button one after the other. If you tap a key twice, it shuffles to the next letter on that key, so to type two letters from the same key you have to tap to the first letter you want, pause a while or press the right> button and then shuffle to the next key. To type two letters from different keys you just shuffle to the first letter, then shuffle to the next letter because the timer resets when you press a different key.

If you then factor in predictive texting, OK is only likely to be two key strokes, whereas kk is unlikely to be recognise by your phones dictionary so you'd then need to go manual.

This. Also, for some reason I read just "k" in the tone of "ok, whatever", while "kk" reads more like "that sounds good to me", more upbeat.

    Could just be me though.

I'm getting too old for this.

Because sometimes people actually respond "kk" to things as in
"Can you grab that for me?"
    "kk, got it."

    ugh

It's kinda lame, yeah. But it's just a shortening of "okay okay". I hear people say far more retarded things on a semi-regular basis, like hella, or periph (short for peripheral vision).

It sounds less weird if you spell it " 'Kay, 'kay." They're just dropping the "O" in "Okay."

Kay kay is used in an exhasperated sense.

One of my past roommates used "LOL" in real life. I put up with it because I was 90% sure he'd flunk out and I'd have the room to myself the next semester.
