New Doublefine Project: PSYCHONAUTS!
Posts
Yay!
There's a difference between going "Oh hrm, well I didn't like this, oh well different strokes for different folks."
and "THIS GAME IS SO GODDAMN AWFUL, THEY WOULD NEVER MAKE A SEQUEL EVER"
The latter is trolling
I didn't say it, you did. It sold like a crappy game, and that's a fact.
You shut your goddamn mouth.
You shut your mouth and you don't ever open it again.
I see, so only people who like something are allowed their opinion?
Yes, because the commercial success of a product is a major factor regarding its inherent quality. Oh, wait.
Edit: Also, you're allowed your opinion, but showing it off in such a dickheaded manner is, to say the least, not recommended.
Saying it sold like a crappy game and trying to pretend you just said it sold poorly means you fail.
Like I said, going "Well, I didn't like Psychonauts, but okay I guess." is one thing and going "There is no way they'd bother making a sequel to such a crappy game, why not go for some cheap waggle bucks?" is something totally different.
Don't get my hopes up, people.
What was one of the top selling titles last month? Mario Party 8.
Viva Pinata was a fantastic game, but sold like a lead balloon.
Games can either A) Appeal to a niche crowd(Which Psychonauts did) and/or Be poorly advertised(Which Psychonauts also was.).
a port to the wii doesn't automatically guarantee good things
You guys tend to overreact whenever I talk about one of their games. Honestly I think the last good game this overrated hack made was DotT many, many, many moons ago. This is my opinion. It is not meant to change your opinion.
We didn't overreact
Your first post was you saying this game was awful and they'd never make a sequel.
That is not the same as "I don't like the game, if you do that's fine. They also don't have enough resources to do this."
Also, backpedalbackpedalbackpedal
Two things.
Thing the first.
I'd call that overreacting.
Thing the second. Why do I have even acknowledge whether or not other people like the game? You already know if you like the game or not. It's irrelevant to how I feel about it. You all are assuming that just because you like the game means that everyone else should bow down to your opinion. I'm sure there are fans of Aquaman, Superman 64, Charlie's Angels or plenty of other games as well, doesn't mean I need to agree with them or plead their case.
But enough about that.
I just realized we left out another possible option for a port.
Psychonauts would probably work out fine on the PSP.
It sold like other awesome games like Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia, Dreamfall, Panzer Dragoon Orta and other great games that didn't get the advertising and hence the sales they deserved.
In other words, sales numbers don't indicate quality.
Stop trying to play this card. You know it's bullshit and we know it's bullshit. You can hate whatever you want, just don't be a fucking douche about how you express it. That is, don't do what you did here, and don't try to make yourself into a pariah.
hey maybe if you don't want people to jump down your throat don't call games crappy and say their creators are overrated hacks?
About 3/4's of it before I couldn't stand it anymore. The platforming is terrible, most of the powers are poorly utilized, the jokes are flat and frankly I didn't really like the writing. Someone had told me that I should give this game a chance, that Lucasarts was holding back this man's creative talent, and that it would be much better than Grim Fandango. They were wrong. Oh so wrong.
okay, so it didn't appeal to you.
my question is
why be so aggressive about it
Also: Opinion, while it can't be proven incorrect in this case, can be vehemently disagreed with.
Especially if it's the sort of opinion that goes "[Starcraft, Halo 1/2/3, KoTOR, Baldur's Gate 2, Final Fantasy 7] is craaaaaap." I mean, goat licking christ. You're kind of asking for it there, even if your opinion is actually more nuanced.
if you don't like the writing of Psychonauts (one of the most well-written games ever made) please give us examples of writing you, in fact, DO like, because that must be some REALLY spectacular uber-writing none of us knows about. Please, enlighten us!
I am hoping this is going to be the PSP port I've always dreamed of for this game. I think Psychonauts would be perfect on the PSP, and would hopefully have a larger audience this time around.
I think the engine may be a bit dated even for the Wii, unfortunately. Plus, I don't think the Wii controller has enough buttons for this game. What do you think they'd use the waggle for?
But, Xenogears, what exactly was wrong with the writing? And which games do you consider to have good writing?
I'm hoping you come up with something that transcends your avatar/screenname theme.
This person said that it was the best mix of platforming/adventure game he'd ever seen. He's probably not wrong about that, as I don't really think this is a popular genre mix. Anyways, he had given me the game and I would have felt bad if I didn't at least give it a go. After the first hour or so I was ready to give up, be he told me that this was just the training part, the regular game is soo much better, challenging and nuanced, etc. So I soldiered on under his watchful eye. I made it quite a bit further before we finally called it a night, and I haven't touched the game since.
The writing was amazingly sharp and witty, but alone couldn't make up for it.
The level design almost did.
But yeah, it wasn't a perfect game, but was a refreshing original game in a sea of generic platformers.
This confuses me.
Unfortunately, while the writing is fantastic in G Gundam (for what it is, mind you) it really did not translate well to the shitty as shit SFC game.
Great Writing in a game?
Planescape:Torment
KOTOR II
Good Writing in a game?
Hotel Dusk
Phoenix Wright:Ace Attorney
Paper Mario:The Thousand Year Door.
Sam and Max: Hit the Road
a few others I can't be arsed to remember.
But I've seen you horribly bash popular games, and then when people call you a troll, you start trying to defend yourself vehemently like you are now. Except you still troll regularly.
Guys, don't feed him.
