Employment Advice - Electrician

I've set my sights on becoming an electrician, and am no longer confused about what career path to walk (for good or for now, who can say). While I imagine that there is the option to go to school for this, I wanted to know if anyone here is, was, or knows an electrician that can offer up some advice. Specifically, is enrollment in school my only option in this? I'd do it if it was, but I'm trying to find the path of least resistance (so to speak).
The one guy I 'knew' years ago that became an apprentice electrician himself did so when I wasn't interested in it. From what I gather, he became as such through some certification process, but I'm not sure if such a thing exists for this career.
Also, I'm not going to fool myself; I know that some math is involved in it. I'd like to get an idea of how high a level is involved exactly.
