An employment thread of my very own

I applied for a job here. Blackberry Farm is one of the nicest resorts in the country, possibly in the world. I applied for an AM/PM Waitstaff position. 10 bones an hour, nothing serious. Good job while I'm in college. I also like getting dressed up in swanky shirts and ties and stuff and strutting my shit in front of people. I like customer service and am very articulate and nice when dealing with customers. I learned this the hard way when I got fired from a job back in highschool for cursing some guy out and flipping him off.

Anyway, I applied and it took almost three weeks just to get a call back about an interview. The interview was last monday and when I went in I was the best dressed and I feel the interview went very well. She grilled me in front of everyone and I had no problems answering questions. She asked me a lot about my previous job, skillsets and stuff, asked me how I felt about BB Farm, and how/why I think I could do well. I answered absolutely honestly and she said they had several positions available that, "I think you could do very well in, Richard."

So I feel the interview went smashing. She told me to call back in a few days which I did. No answer. Left her a voicemail and went on. Wait and wait and still nothing. I gave another call back yesterday again to her voicemail. I basically just explained I was interested in the status of my app and that I was still very interested in the position we spoke about in the interview. She mentioned in the interview she had other people she wanted to interview before she hired me.

Am I fucked? Are they dragging ass? The only thing I hated about the interview is I had gum in my mouth. Apparently I felt like it was amateur hour in highschool drama class or some shit. I can't believe I made such a stupid mistake, but I don't feel like it hurt me to the point she wouldn't hire me. I feel like I'm over analyzing this. I know I need to be patient but I am very, very ready to get back to work. I have a very good attitude about this place and I have a strong willing desire to work for this company. I feel I could be happy here while making a decent wage and this is important to me. She gave me her card. I've been using her direct line but I also have her email. I thought about sending a detailed email, but I just don't know. I do not wish to be an annoyance, but I want to make it known that I feel like I would be right working here.

----TL;DR----

I applied for a job at a swanky resort. I've been interviewed and it went well and I believe they want to hire me, but this is taking forever. Need advice on how to proceed next, as this has never happened to me.

Well, having gum in your mouth was pretty dumb (seriously, what the hell were you thinking?), but a week isn't that long to wait for a call back. Pretty typical, actually, and if this place is that popular and that busy then it will probably take longer than that. I've had a place call me back after six weeks to offer me a job because they were just too busy to look through resumes.

Keep looking for other jobs, just in case, and call back every 3-5 business days. Eventually they'll either call you back and tell you that you got the job or they'll get sick of hearing from you and call you back to tell you the position's been filled.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

Don't even get me started about the gum. I even knew while I was waiting that I needed to throw it out but I thought I would get up and go into her office instead of her coming out to meet me. Got caught flat-footed. I just tried to tuck it under my tongue but it didn't work. It popped out once or twice while I was speaking but I just rolled with it and she didn't seem to be bothered by it.

It didn't occur to you just to swallow it?

    I'm not swallowing that.

Why are you worried about this one job so much?

I mean, it's precisely the same thing when people fall head over heels for one girl and become obsessed.

Like Feral says, apply to other jobs. Keep your options open. Hell, if you get more than one job offer you might even be able to play them against each other to get a higher wage than normal.

Because I genuinely wish to work for this company. This is a job where I could see myself not only earning a somewhat decent wage while in school, but still able to be happy. I quit my last job because despite the good money I was becoming miserable.

I also have been applying to other places with no luck. In fact one place I applied to called me back and then declared bankruptcy a week later. I don't think they're going to call back again.

One factor in all of this hinges on the HR policies of the company in general and it's not something you would know. They may need to interview a certain number of applicants before they can make a decision, or they have currently offered the job to someone and are waiting their response before going to other applicants they want to extend an offer to.

In my company, more often than not, we don't have the time to work on hiring interviews and such that frequently and the typical time, unless we find that diamond in the rough, is several weeks before we even get about setting up an interview. We also may change the posting depending upon what kind of feedback we get and people we see applying for a job.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably call every other day and just note that I called due to their request during the interview given to me on such and such date. Second, if you haven't already, consider sending an email or letter thanking this person for the interview. If you want to also include a sentence or two about why you are excited for an opportunity with the company, that's your choice. People react differently to this from my experiences. However, I've found that most people do enjoy getting a thank you email or letter. I'd also consider that they are likely offering this to someone else or are still interviewing.

Have you looked at other jobs this company is offering if you want to work for the company? Maybe they have something else you'd fit or enjoy?

Yeah, but he should have done this the same day or the day after the interview. Later than that and it looks like, "oh hey, I see now that I may not get the job, so maybe this nice letter will change your mind."

Seriously, good luck getting this job. Looks like a nice club.

Sadly, take your hopes down a notch. While I am not big into country clubs things, serving is a really tough deal to get into. You need a ton of experience if this place prides themselves on service, which most nice places do.

Apply other places. If you really wanted to work there, you could try bussing. Less money, but you normally get split tips and experience to be a busser is much less strict than being a server.

Also, I don't know about this place's policies, but they might call into all your old jobs that involve customer service and serving experience. If they call for a reference from a customer service place and get a "Would Not Hire Again"...It wouldn't look too bright.

So, just let this one ride. Don't harass about it. You've left one message. In my opinion, that should be enough.

I wish I had thought about the letter. I thought about shooting her an email at some point but I was not sure what to say. She had three positions she felt I would do well in. One was in dining, the other was the front desk supervisor, and the other was a job that opens in december.

Dining was my first choice and what I wanted. The 2nd job is basically the ultimate go-to-guy. You're the first that the guests see when they arrive and the first to react if they need anything. I think its a job where I could be flexible, see a lot of the farm's property, and really put myself to good use. I like challenges, and I like flexibility. I'd be on my feet a lot, hustling around, and working hard. I just really feel like I could do this job well and earn my money honestly while doing a good service and smiling while doing it. The 3rd job opens in december and it is a behind the scenes gig. I would basically run BB Farm's only warehouse. Everything they order comes through this place. It is a monday-friday job which is why I was interested in it.

Basicially I want job #2. I plan on calling again in the next couple days, and probably leaving it at that. I feel it might be too late to write a letter and I just want to continue showing interest and that I have not forgotten. I really want to work at this place.

edit: Also there is no tipping at this place. I like that. Because I am not fighting for anything extra I can forget about the money and focus on my job; customer service.
