First Salvo: Danger's Dozen

I don't know if any of you have seen this already but I was just talking to one of the guys at First Salvo and got to see some of the upcoming art in a few of their books. Seems like it's going to be some pretty fun and interesting stuff. They have Norm Breyfogle working with them. If that name sounds familiar it's because he did a shit load of Batman comics art in the early nineties, including the creation of the Robin costume that was used up until just recently when it became all red and black.

And yet, amongst all the shilling, I have yet to even hear what the broad concept for the book is. After looking at the preview pages for Danger's Dozen, and lightly perusing assorted links, all I got was, "Robert Kirkman's Brit, but Italian, not written by Robert Kirkman, and drawn by NORM FUCKING BREYFOGLE! Who drew BATMAN! He's famous!"

These guys wanted to know how to advertise their book? Tell us what it's about for Christ's sake. Distill it into a single sentence, then see if it still sounds interesting.

Here's a brief description of the Dangers Dozen series.

Following WW2 Aman, a former RAF pilot was ready for his next mission – the defense of the earth against new dangers created in the wake of a cosmic storm which broke the very boundaries of reality!
Aman's and his 11-man crew of handpicked, ex-military men and women, carry out their mission, test-piloting new alien technologies, exploring different dimensions, and employing the incredible energies now available to earth!

Hummm.. I don't recall seeing that anywhere...

I was just trying to point out a new series that I'm involved in AND to get some feedback from readers. You know take an ACTIVE role. I mean Indy publishing should be the place where readers CAN get involved with the creators ask questions HELP make a new book!

I mean the BIG 2 don't need any help promoting books, and they don't really care on the whole, its the Indys out there who do. They are the ones who listen. When any of the plethora of new DC or Marvel books get canceled do you think really it hurts them?

And yes Grifter is Bermudian and one of my customers. He was was talking with me one day at the shop and told be "You should go on Penny Arcade, guys there are friendly and helpful" he is not involved with the book but wanted to lend a hand. And I appreciate it.

I've posted a brief synopsis's of Danger's Dozen. Armed with that information do you have any feedback?

Well if you REALLY want to promote your book, ask Gabe or Tycho or even just Cardboard Tube, the admin.

Gabe and Tycho could give you the Okay, and the admins/mods/SOMEONE will be informed that they decided it's perfectly fine for you to advertise. Like etoychest over in G&T. He can plug his site all day(albeit subtly, and not entire topics :P) because Gabe and Tycho gave him their blessing.

As for the plot: It would definitely hinge on the writing and art. Someone like Peter David could make Armageddon a brilliant script, and likewise there are writers who could turn Citizen Kane into the most contrived shit ever.

I'm not too keen on the concept personally, but I'd probably pick up the first issue, or even some sort of "primer" issue to let people see what they're getting into.

When's Contract coming out? Seriously, I really liked that preview. Probably the only thing I didn't like was the overdone German accent on one of the guys.

Also, what are your plans for other books besides these two? If you're making more books, are you taking an Image approach (creator owned) or work for hire? Shared universes? Also, do you guys plan to do digital comics beyond just some previews?

CONTRACT will be making its debut in mid 2008 with, (baring disaster) A May Free Comic Book Day preview and then the First issue following in June.

LOL the German character your referring to is Panzer. He is supposed to be a bit over the top.
But what exactly did you not like about the accent? Did you find it hard to read?

We also have the title Wild Days in production.

These are creator owned projects with hired artists. Though artists ourselves, sometimes finding the time to get behind the drawing board is near impossible. We are not publishing other creator owned properties at the moment BUT this could change with time. As for shared universes (and without giving anything away), Dangers Dozen will in fact have cameos from other creator owned characters and Cross-overs is something we are definitely interested in doing.

Digital comics are being planned and worked on.

Granted, my friends are making the books, I don't think that's a big deal. I think the impression of an invasion comes from them trying to get some sort of feedback since the topic was sort of ignored.

For the record, I'm cool with comic creators coming in here and pimping their wares. Creators need all the help they can get.

Mad, the German character's speech pattern and accent was just off-putting to me. It sorta read like someone trying to channel all of Arnold Schwarzenneger's over-the-top accent moments ('Git to da choppa' and 'It's not a tuma' come to mind) and combine it with the dudes from Sprockets. In theory it ought to be pretty funny, but it's not really when it's the entirety of the character's speech pattern. It just distracts me from learning more about the character.

Also, you guys should definitely do paid digital downloads. That's a sure way to get me to check your stuff out.

Great. Good feedback. Panzer speech was and is something that I'm still addressing. His speech pattern is supposed to be a take on those Arnold moments and so in that I was successful. It's a fine line to try and get his over-the-top personality but still get the reader to care for him. What I want is for the reader to bond with his goofy charm and "hear" his voice when they read the book.

Thanks for the feedback and I will be putting some thought into it.

    Hello everyone!

Sorry to not have entered the fray before now. But Danger's Dozen #1 went to the printers last week and there have been many things to attend to in this launch. And love.

So, DIGITAL COMICS. Who has heard of WOWIO? We are in discussions with them as well as two mobile phone content providers, both of which will have tailored, and in some cases, exclusive content, which will expand the media focus of our comics. This harnesses the "outside world's" hidden interest in comics.

Danger's Dozen, I think, is a hard to describe book PER STORY, because there is so much that will be told, in time. But essentially, Danger's Dozen is a book about kicking ASS.

Aman and his chosen teams go forth and KICK ASS. Threats to the earth come up against the Danger's Dozen and get their asses served to them. This is the dawn of our world's awakening (and even reawakening) to magic, aliens, fallen gods and the demonic empires of ancient times.

And new threats continue to evolve. Beings of power. New weapons, and machines produced from new and ancient technologies - abused, and used to the ends of others. With "The End" always possible - if not for Aman and the Dozen.

Who is Aman? He's the Hero of the Age - the Champion of Life. He is an ex-RAF pilot from World War Two, a veteran seeking his new path in life, while striken with the memories of a past that cannot be his own - and a woman he longs for, who he knows loves him with all her heart. Yet, he knows only that she is his lost soulmate.

The Dozen belong to Danger, and Danger puts them through endless tests. "Danger" in the sense of risk and death - not a person. They are constantly at danger's door, but not all come back from it, and so, Aman, who if at best, survives each mission, must form a new group of experts to go out and kick more ass.

Edit: The art looks great... but when someone asks you about your book and the only thing you can say is "it's about kicking ass" you know there is something horribly wrong there.

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with DD. There was something kinda stilted about the dialogue, like it was trying for the old pulp style talking but not quite hitting it correctly. The art was good though, so that's something.

    Are we being invaded?

You aren't being invaded. People talk so highly of Penny Arcade, we came over to see what all the cool stuff was, and thought, we could mention our book.

We can do some cross-promotional advertising of Penny Arcade. We can swap ads, place ads on A First Salvo, we can all enjoy each other's stuff.

Penny-Arcade needs more support, as does the entire industry. Lets not fight amongst each other but go out there and get more sales all around!

People are flocking to movies about comics, let's have more comics out there!

Yeah, if you want to do all of that, you'll have to get in touch with the actual employees of Penny Arcade. They don't really hang out in these forums. Try the main page for their contact info. I'll just say, though, that getting your stuff up on the main page is not as easy as pimping your stuff out in the forums. Their ad space isn't cheap to come by, and my understanding is Jerry and Mike really have to like your product for it to even get considered for an ad. Their ads are like little recommendations.

Also, how much is the first issue, and where's the preview? My personal recommendation is to go ahead and eat the cost of putting the first issue out on the web for free. If you hook up with a comics torrent site, that'd be even better, as you'd not have to pay for bandwidth. You really need as many eyes as possible to get a look at this first issue, and trust me when I say that announcing you're doing this to Newsarama and CBR would get a lot of people to at least check it out once.
