Black Books is amazing, it reintroduced me to british comedies when it was on comedy central a few years back. My parents are both european, and my mother british, so we would often watch keeping up appearances and Are you being served when I was younger, but Black Books led to me watching Spaced, which led to a bunch of other great brit shows I've enjoyed.

I'd like to own it, but the 3 series box set is 43 bucks on amazon, there are only 6 episodes per a series, and I can't stomach spending that much money on 18 twenty-two minute episodes.

I cannot find any copies of Spaced that will work in a US DVD player.
And that makes me very unhappy.

    Amazon's estimate: "unknown."

It's been unknown for as long as I've known about spaced.

I went there about a year ago to see if I could buy them, and it said unknown back then too.

Do media companies actually have some falsified justification for region encoding, or is it just straight up "fuck people with overpriced local versions and deny people the chance to play stuff they've legally bought for shits and grins"?

I was just relating to your plight.

I have been waiting for that show to come here so I could finally see simon pegg and nick frosts other work.

Loved shaun of the dead so when I found out they were in a show I went searching, but the cruel bitch that the internet is, would only show me links to DVD's that don't exsist and shitty 3 minute clips on youtube.

    It's a bitch neville.

My advice is this, learn to drink the pain away.

Part of the reason is PAL and NTSC. But mostly it's liscencing issues.

Specifically, "It also violates the international copyright treaty [2], Article 4[3], which equates electronic media with that of other literary works such as books, with the copy owner having the right to buy, read, and sell the material anywhere in the world, as well as Article 10 [4], which prohibits the introduction of national legislation that limits copy owners normal use."

With ever-increasing globalization, how long do they think they can keep up the charade?

(And just to confirm I'm arguing this with a fulll knowledge of corporate greed, I'm not a naive idiot :P, so the answer is as long as possible, which will probably be until digital distribution renders the subject moot.)

Nah, the only way past that is to use a proxy, since most digital distribution things are region locked using IPs. Good luck finding a proxy that will let you download 25GB within your lifetime. :)

Writers get paid crap man. The WGA minimum is usually the guideline for a spec script, which is 250,000 bucks. Without the writer there is no movie. Writers are the most under appreciated people in Hollywood. $250,000 for something that almost always nets in the tens of millions. Ridiculous.

Getting into TV is actually pretty easy.

This is kind of what I want to do, so I've done a fair amount of research.

If you are going through an agent, then you have to write two screenplays, preferably of different genres. This shows TV producers that you have the capability to finish a longer storyline. Alternatively, you can write the show and ask for their "Plot bible". It's a list of all the characters, their personalities and what they would and would not do. Then you basically write what amounts to a half-hour fanfiction; a 28-35 page teleplay of an episode of the show and send it back to em. Sometimes you'll get lucky. Seinfeld was responsible for employing tons of fledgling writers, that's why their show was rarely stale. There were constantly new writers.

Do you even understand how business works? The camera engineer would talk to the guy who hired him to make the camera if he didn't feel the compensation was sufficient. This is between the WGA and studios, and the WGA does feel they aren't being fairly compensated.

Edit: No, I am not Defendering the thread.
