Mass Effect: The monkey doesn't have the fucking module!
There is idiocy, and then there is bias for some reason. This is not a 7 game.
A 7 game either has GLARING technical issues. (Not niggles), or is poor gameplay.
Mass effect has neither of these.
Not if you actually use all 10 numbers of your scoring system.
But again, things would be a lot better if reviews weren't given a score, so much as a "Worth a buy, worth a rent, avoid" system that encouraged you to actually read the text and make a judgement for yourself.
There is idiocy, and then there is bias for some reason. I believe this is both.

I can't wait until I get home from T-Day dinner tonight to continue my Mass Effect experience. I'm only on the Citadel after talking to the Council for the first time. ME is absolutely breathtaking.
I use a review system of out of 100; with three bars that distinguish the scoring. Ie one bar is far aesthetics, audio, gui, etc, the other for gameplay and the final for life expentancy, ie multiplayer or how long lasting the single player is. The scores are then averaged for a final score. It's sort of a large 10 out of 10 system, but it works a bit better in my opinion because it gives me room to choose when scoring, and shows people who like to just skip to the score what the fault line of the game was.
I sort of agree that scoring should really be abolished. It's thanks to scoring that i almost passed up the likes of The Witcher, which is quite frankly a great game and really enjoyable. The problem is scoring is sort of what draws the people in, so that they can quote something. They won't quote what the reviewer said, but rather what the score was.
Yeah, I'm not too worried - Bloodlines also got a 7, and Bloodlines is my second favourite game. But I do generally take notice of Edge, and from everything I've heard Mass Effect's technical problems aren't nearly as game-breaking as Bloodlines' so...plus they actually gave Halo 3 a 10, appalling! :P
Yeah, there are a lot of minor technical issues in ME that add up to be quite an annoyance at times. They do detract from the experience, but the game is excellent nonetheless. Combat (once you get than hang of it) is really, really fun.

So I just went through the character creation system, and I tried real hard to make someone that looked cool (like me!)
Girlfriend: "He looks like a cancer victim."
So I'm normal Shepard.
Default Shepard has a much better model than the custom faces, which annoys me because BioWare always acted like default Shepard was created using the same tools available to the player. But the fact is - you can't make a duplicate of the default Shepard using the creation tools. There is no hairstyle that matches his, the face shape is different, etc. The default Shepard looks way better than any custom male character I've yet to see.
really? I made a custom male Shepard that looks AWESOME. I'll post a picture when I get home from work later.

Tell you what, I'll go play my copy which arrived early, and I'll let you know what numerical value it warrants.
I really just want to be smug that I've got an early copy. I bet my 360 gives me a ring o' death.
My copy is arriving tommorrow morning (yep there are still those of us who have not played it)
So although i cant speak for the rest of the issues being brought up, i dont believe the graphics issues will dampen my experience, especially if theyre said to be no worse then Halo 2's (which was only in your face obvious during the first level's cutscenes).
When those kind of graphical issues ensue, i know its just because this game is kicking the next gen console's ass. When it comes to scoring, i dont think the game should be marked down for Bioware only just managing to squeeze their uncompramised vision of a game onto a single disc. And no i am not on Bioware's payroll.
So I came into this thread to find happiness and I've found that the character creation sucks, the game is 12 hours long, and riddled with technical problems.

Lovely.
Oh, and the dialogue options don't matter.
The character creation doesn't suck, the game length varies by person, technical problems present yes, dialogue is great. Happiness.

The character creation is very good, although I don't think you can create ANYONE you'll be able to create a character you're happy with, I wager.
I went through the game on normal, and beat it in 25 hours while doing very few sidequests, and i'm not lying there. But I didn't rush the game. Rushed I expect you could beat it in say 15 hours, minimum.
And there are a couple of technical problems. Texture pop-in is the major one, but that happens with all unreal engine games, for example gears of war. It's because they don't utilize the hard drive. It's a fix they could implement I expect, but we'll see if that appears. Some aspects of inventory management are annoying, too.
But it is still an amazing game. Hense 93% on gamerankings. I don't agree with the 7 rating that EDGE gave it at all, but i'm not blind to it's flaws.
I've essentially ran through the first little section. I enjoyed myself, but haven't fully *grasped* the game yet. I did notice however that I couldn't make a Shepherd that wasn't a decaying corpse, I'll work on that tonight.
I just skimmed the thread and that's what I picked up from everyone. Alot of negativity.

I really don't see how character creation sucks, it's the best I've ever seen. Well maybe not the character CREATION itself, but at least the faces. I don't really care to be able to make my guy look 1000 different ways if it's all ugly.
After the people here kindly explained that her female character didn't HAVE to be a fun loving bisexual for there to be a romance plot, she immedfiately proceeded to create a very good copy of Evanescence's Amy Lee.

They do. For example you can choose to kill a person or not kill a person, but in the end you save the galaxy anyway.

Well, the major choices yes. But all the little stuff in between makes no difference. Like when Joker calls you, you have 3 options how to respond, but all result in you saying "Come in Joker", and all result in him responding the same way. It's just a lot more obvious now that the main character is actually voiced, instead of being mute and you thinking he's actually saying the sentence you selected.
The Wolfman on
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Coming back from the labs when you reach the encampment again and the one scientist tries to take it over. All 3 dialog options result in Shepard blowing his brains out. But there are 2 greyed out options for Charm and Intimidate. I had thought I had enough Charm points for anything so far, but I guess not. I'm just curious if that option prevents you from killing the scientist.
As far as dialog and options go, I'm really starting to see how shallow the system actually is. On some reloads, I'll end up picking different points just to see what Shepard says. But, he just says the exact same thing. For most options, there's no difference for any of them. The top option might be the nice one and the bottom the bad one, but it's the same exact VA dialog for both. There's been a few times too where the option I pick and what Shepard actually says aren't even similar. For the most part, the game is just giving you three "Yes" options, with no difference whatsoever between "Yes (good)" and "Yes (bad)". Because it's the exact same dialog and response no matter what you pick.
The thing is though, I'm not quite sure if this is a bad thing or not. I suppose it's rather brilliant that they're effectively giving you the illusion of choice without destroying the narrative. But I can't help see past it and think this is no different than something like the classic Dragon Warrior choice. "Will you save the princess? *No* But you must! Will you save the princess?".
There is idiocy, and then there is bias for some reason. I believe this is both.

The problem is that people now expect reviewers to use the 7 to 9 scale. 7 in both 1UP and GameSpot's (and EDGE's?) scale means "good", but people still get pissed when a game they like gets that kind of score.

I had enough intimidate to have to not go the extreme route, and instead came to a - mutually acceptable conclusion. There have only been a few instances where I didn't have a high enough Intimidate (it is now maxed out at 10) to use any of the options.
Dialog does make a difference, but not in all situations as someone said. Occasionally the dialog will just allow you to meander but you will get to the main point - especially if it is storyline based.
Ok quick question, after using something like assassination is there anything on my HUD that tells me when I can use it again? Because as far as I can tell the only way to tell is by going to the seperate ability selection menu and it'll tell you if its recharging or not, some icon on my HUD would be really nice...
Was the choice between Ashley and Kaidan supposed to be hard? Also, I'm glad I had enough charm /intimidate to keep Wrex.

Mass Effect has been so much fun so far. I left the Citadel and am off to find Li'ara before embarking on the main quest again. Might even pit-stop at a couple of planets I got leads on while I was on the Citadel.
There are some issues, of course. Textures popping in is one, but I'm an old man and this doesn't bother me much. In truth, I don't even notice unless it's outrageously obvious. Framerates do dip here and there, but the game hasn't (yet) become unplayable or anything. I did have an entire pirate stronghold suddely pop into existence while I was crusing in the Mako, which was silly and jarring, but since I was able to massacre them, it didn't really piss me off. If they'd been attacking me while "invisible", then I would have been pissed. I can also see inventory management for your party members becoming a chore, but for now, it's no big deal.
Despite the pop-in, the graphics are still great and I love, love, love the voice acting. I'm using a custom avatar who doesn't look too bad, though good/bad lighting conditions can alter that - sometimes he looks very good indeed, and other times he looks kinda dumb. The sidequests have been fun and varied (I loved the one where you
track down a rogue AI that's siphoning money from the Casino
) and the main story is engaging and cool. The supporting cast is interesting and I've derived tremendous enjoyment from squeezing people for every ounce on information and then listening as my Codex educates me further on the universe (this is a particular favourite).
So far, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

What annoys me about the dialog is that half the time I have no idea what Shephard is going to say. I feel like I'm only passing him vague suggestions that me may or may not pay any mind to. Sometimes I'm just completely baffled as to how his actual line relates to what I told him to say. I wish they would have just written the lines of dialogue there.

That's the point. You're not suppose to know exactly what he's going to say, but he's never said anything completely different than I expected him to. Maybe you have butter fingers and accidentally select a different choice without knowing it, I don't know.
Edit: Besides, if they did what you wanted to, putting the lines of dialog as the choices so I know exactly what Shepard is going to say, word for word, that would take me out of the experience. It would stop being quite so cinematic and start feeling more like, well, a game.

This is at least a 9 from me, but I can see where they're coming from, and I still respect them for it.
For reference, what did EDGE give the KOTOR's? Also 7's, I think?
But at least we're not fatasses.
Spooky coincidence though: KOTOR got 93.1% in Game Rankings. Mass Effect also has 93%
O_o
Probably not nearly as spooky as it looks though :P
EDIT: According to Metacritic it got 9/10 from Edge.
Your right!
And I was explaining that 7 is a score for a middling to good game, not a good to great game which Mass Effect is.

Because he's always stomping around generally acting like an angry dinosaur. I blame the fact he can't procreate with any female lizards due to....
You're not talking about Wrex, are you?
Because his people are infected by a genophage that prevents breeding and are dying out, silly!
