I need more dungeons to crawl in...

So along with my purchase of Crysis the other day, I picked up a copy of Orcs & Elves for the DS. I'd read some favorable previews online, most of them mentioning that it brings back memories of first person dungeon crawling RPG's of days gone by.

Well, to be honest, I missed out on that era. Although I've played more modern first person RPG's like Morrowind, this is something different, and probably the first game of its type that I've ever played.

I really, really like it. But with this revelation comes a dilemma...I'm going to need another fix after I'm done, but I don't know where to begin. I figured G&T would be my best resource.

So my request: Recommend me some classic style first-person dungeon crawlers. I'm itching to explore more heavily-pixellated underground spaces, taking on any sprite-based evil that dares to challenge me.

I'll have to second this post. I wish there was a game on the DS that was kind of like Disgaea and its seemingly endless dungeon-crawling in the Item World. I want a RPG that's randomized, or infinite.

Arx Fatalis (PC) would be exactly what the doctor ordered.

    Alternately,
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC)
    Shining in the Darkness (GEN)
Might and Magic II (GEN / PC)
    Daggerfall (PC)
    Menzoberranzan (PC)
    Wizardry 8 (PC)

If you're talking DS -- and you may well be -- I would heavily endorse Etrian Odyssey. As classic a first-person dungeon crawl as there ever was. However, it's also face-rapingly hard and unforgiving, not unlike the true dungeon-crawls of years gone by. If you're willing to put in some effort, it's damned rewarding. Plus it has the ever-entertaining "map it yourself" feature, which is deliciously old-school.

Also, I second Arx Fatalis from above. Glitchy but brilliant fun.

If you're willing to drop the first person bit (during combat) to a more Final Fantasy 1 style, Etrian Odyssey would be a very good bet. Very old school, and the second screen actually doubles as your own hand drawn map.

    DosBox should work.

I should've clarified, I'm talking either PC or DS/GBA, since those are my only two available platforms. ;)

Taking note of the suggestions so far; most are games I've heard mentioned but until now never really had reason to try.

(edit) And yeah, you can get just about anything to run if you try hard enough. Where DOSbox fails I often get FreeDOS or Win98 + MS Virtual PC to work for me.

I've learned to love me some virtual computing.

I remember I used to have this SNES 1st person D&D licenced game called Eye of the Beholder that was ported to GBA, might want to look at that.

Actually, all three games are available for the PC, so yeah, Eye of the Beholder is an excellent choice.

Let's talk about roguelikes, they are vaguely related. You should all play the English translation of Shiren the Wanderer for the DS ok.
