Xbox 360 + LCD + sound woes

I just bought a VGA cord to play my Xbox 360 on my 22" Chimei LCD in my room. I also have a Creative 5200 5.1 system for the computer in the room. I bought this 3rd party cable on eBay. Which is bullshit in itself. From the photos and description it seems to be an official cable. However it isn't. It is a " x-360" cable. I guess a cable is a cable though right?

ANYWAY. Stupidly, I bought the ones with RCA jacks or whatever they are called. So I have no way of getting sound unless I drag a TV over. Which defeats the purpose. What is the cheapest easiest way to fix this? A converter or some sort? Cheers.

PS: decided to not go the 5.1 route unless it is cheaper.

I'm assuming the speakers are standard minijack? Then an RCA to minijack convertor would do for stereo sound. You won't have any 5.1 though.

I don't think you can get 5.1 out of an Xbox without the optical signal.

Yeah, a <$2 adapter will solve all your woes.

As an aside, how well does the cheap-o cable work?

Well. As I said, I am pretty sure a cable is a cable. It looks great. :) The cable looks pretty legit too. Only cost me 20 dollars rather than 70. (AUS)

Thanks guys! consider this solved. I will get a RCA mini jack today. :)

When you guys say "minijack" you do mean 1/4" right?

    no... 1/8" I think. 1/4" is a guitar lead size? I want a 1/8" I am pretty sure... Like a headphone jack.

You aren't getting true surround sound out of that, if that matters at all.

Just for future reference -- the official Microsoft VGA cable comes bundled with an RCA-headphone converter.

I too bought a 3rd party VGA cable that didn't come with an RCA to Minijack converter. Trouble is, at least for me, these things are a pain in the ass to find. I also had to buy a seperate gender changer.

The amount of money you purchase getting the stuff you need for the 3rd party VGA cable kind of makes buying a 3rd party cable pointless. If you're thinking of getting one. Don't buy 3rd party! You'll save yourself money and time.

Really? Do you have a Radio Shack near you? They overcharge, but have them in abundance. I personally have multiple RCA->1/8" and 1/8" gender changers just sitting around my house.

Unfortunately, Radio Shack doesn't grace the presence of the UK.

I opted for the VGA cable because I didn't want to be stuck in SD, but wanted it cheap. Unfortunately, I was attracted to the cheaper price tag of £10 for a 3rd party cable. Big mistake. :P

For me it was a good deal...which I now don't regret. Minijack converter cost me 4 dollars and the cable cost me 20. 24 dollars rather than 70...

    I live in Australia btw.

    Wow. That's pretty cheap.

That just goes to show how badly Microsoft overcharge. AUS$24 compared to AUS$70 (that meant to mean Australian dollar if that didnt make sense). That's a huge gap where price is concerned. Microsoft need to do something about that.

Heh, it was on eBay though. They probably won't do anything about it because they are making money.

Oh, I know they wont want to do anything about it. But they will have to when people realise and stop buying their stuff.

Meh, I suppose they have to make money somehow. And I suppose quite a bit of it gets plowed back into the gaming division.
