Changing file extension

Stupid Question I know but I needed a large file sent from work and we could only do it through gmail. since gmail doesn't let you sent zips he renamed it a pdf. Now how the heck do I change it back? just renaming it doesn't work and I can't find the option to force windows to show file extensions.

    In any ordinary folder window, go to the View menu, then Folder Options.

    Click on the 'View' tab in the resulting dialog.

    At the bottom of the first page of items is a checkbox 'Hide extensions for known file types.' Uncheck, apply and hit OK.

    Voila.
